Keratosis Pilaris or "Chicken Bumps"

Keratosis pilaris (KP) is a common skin condition that causes rough, lightly red or colorless bumps on the skin. Keratosis pilaris affects 40-50% of adults and 50-80% of teens. While dermatologists can easily diagnose keratosis pilaris, they can offer little help in treating it. Keratosis pilaris is a hereditary condition that often lowers the self-esteem of those effected by it. Although the medical community has failed to provide a cure there is a simple natural remedy that offers great results.

What is Keratosis Pilaris?

Keratosis pilaris is a condition that causes bumps on the skin at the hair follicle, these bumps most often appear on the arms but can occur anywhere on the skin except for the palms and bottom of the feet. Keratosis pilaris usually appears by the time a person turns 10 years old.

What causes Keratosis Pilaris?

Keratosis pilaris is a hereditary condition; if a parent has it, a child will likely have it too. Keratosis pilaris takes place when the body produces too much keratin and this builds up around the hair follicle causing plugs. This skin condition is harmless and only affects the appearance and feel of the skin.

Who is effected?

Keratosis pilaris effects people of all ages and can improve and worsen over time. Climate, seasons, and even stress affect the severity of keratosis pilaris. It is estimated that keratosis pilaris effects 40-50% of the adult population and 50-80% of the adult population and effects all races.

What can a dermatologist do about keratosis pilaris?

A dermatologist can easily diagnose the condition but as for a cure, they can offer only little help. Dermatologists will often recommend gentle exfoliation using a loofah sponge, using a hydrocortisone (HC) cream when the bumps become irritated and red and an alpha hydroxy cream when the bumps are larger. The HC cream will sooth the skin when it becomes irritated and the alpha hydroxy cream will help to smooth down the bumps when they are larger. The hydrocortisone cream needs to be used intermittently.

While these topical methods of treating keratosis pilaris offer some improvement, they involve a fair amount of work with little to zero results.

Because keratosis pilaris is harmless and there isn’t a cure, dermatologists don’t feel it is necessary to offer more than this in the way of advice. The only other option a dermatologist can suggest is considering a laser skin treatment, which might improve the skin but is expensive.

Keratosis Pilaris negatively effects self esteem

The problem remains, especially for adolescent girls and those with more obvious bumps, that they are embarrassed by it. People with the condition become self-conscious and don’t want to wear clothes that might bring attention to their skin, they might not want to wear a bathing suit and the concern about the appearance of their skin might take a great deal of their time and energy.

There is another way that doesn’t involve creams or lasers, it is not an overnight remedy but over time this cure can offer lasting results.

TwinLab - Emulsified Norwegian Cod Liver Oil Orange is a liquid product which I have been using for many years. I like the taste, quality and price point. I buy the product in bulk, keep one bottle in the fridge and try to remember to take it everyday.

Recommended dose: follow the manufacturer's recommended daily dose

It turns out that Grandma was right, the cure is cod liver oil. Not only is cod liver oil an excellent remedy for keratosis pilaris, it is a super food! If you consider that historically, fish made up for a large part of the human diet, it is likely that keratosis pilaris is the result of a deficiency since most people consume relatively small amounts of fish. Either way, this remedy not only works, it involves a lot less effort than sloughing skin and buying different creams and paying so much attention to your skin with little benefit.

If you don't like the taste of Cod Liver Oil it is now available in capsules

If you don't like the taste of Cod Liver Oil it is now available in capsules

Cod liver oil is now available in many forms such as pills, flavor enhanced liquids as well as the standard liquid form. Cod liver oil is not very expensive and there are no side effects, there is nothing to lose. Cod liver oil is available in most pharmacies, grocery stores and health food stores as well. You can also purchase cod liver oil online.

Cod Liver Oil Capsule Recommendation

Nature Made Cod Liver Oil Soft Gels makes a convenient easy to swallow capsule. I find this quicker than using the liquid version since there is no spoon and no measuring needed.

There is no need to suffer any longer with feeling self-conscious about your skin. How great it will feel to slip on a bathing suit and love the skin you’re in!
