Copaiba Essential Oil: Aromatic and Topical Benefits

  • Author:

I have been using essential oils and aromatherapy to improve my health, immunity, and emotional well-being for years.

What Is Copaiba Essential Oil?

Copaiba essential oil is made by steam distilling the gum resin that is tapped from the Copaifera reticulata tree which originates from Brazil. The oil gives off a woodsy, gentle aroma when diffused. This aroma creates a relaxing environment and can help calm the mind and reduce anxious feelings.

With its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, copaiba is also a great essential oil to use topically for pain management and skin care. Let's explore some of the great aromatic and topical benefits copaiba has to offer.

A Note on Essential Oil Safety

Since essential oils are not regulated by the FDA, companies can call anything an "essential oil." Because of this, it is important to be sure that the essential oil company of your choice performs rigorous testing to be sure their oils are free of pesticides, chemicals, and other additives that would make them not safe to use. I personally use and recommend Plant Therapy, Rocky Mountain Oils, and Doterra as these websites state their testing procedures and their safety guidelines for the oils they sell. Since they are so transparent with their quality standards, I trust that their products are of good quality and are safe to use.

Aromatic Benefits

When diffused, copaiba essential oil produces a woodsy aroma that can help calm your mind and reduce anxious feelings. This makes it a great oil to diffuse before bed or when feelings of stress are overwhelming you. Copaiba blends well with other oils that also reduce stress and anxious feelings.

Copaiba is also useful for relieving nasal congestion and is great for supporting the respiratory system. Whenever seasonal allergies or illness has your respiratory tract not at its best, diffusing copaiba can help you feel better by opening your nasal passages and soothing respiratory distress.

You may diffuse copaiba by itself, or blend the oil with other essential oils that also are good at calming the mind or supporting respiratory health. Some great blends incorporating copaiba include:

Topical Benefits

Copaiba has natural anti-inflammatory properties that make it a great essential oil to use for pain management and skin care. To use copaiba for pain, add 2 drops of copaiba to a tablespoon of carrier oil (coconut, almond, jojoba, etc.) and rub on the affected area. You should always dilute essential oil with a carrier oil before applying to the skin to avoid sensitivity.

In addition to being a great oil for pain management, copaiba is also a good choice for skin care because of its antibacterial and skin renewing properties. These properties help reduce the appearance of acne and keeps skin looking healthy. To receive the skin care benefits copaiba offers, add 1 drop to your facial toner, cleanser or moisturizer daily. You may also add 1 drop of copaiba to a carrier oil (for acne prone skin, I recommend grapeseed oil).
