How a Colonic Works
The colonic is a foundational treatment used for prevention and as an alternative therapy. It is used specifically to help clear the intestinal system, remove blockages, and to create re-balance in the body.
Colonics are used with hydrotherapy by draining water into the intestinal system. This is done until the intestinal system experiences a sense of discomfort, in which the water is drained out, removing waste and blockages within the system. Repeating this consistently for a period of time can remove up to 5-10 pounds of waste within the system. On average, 60 pounds of water are flushed into and out of the system to completely cleanse the intestines.
The colonic is a preventative and alternative way to balance the body. Removing excess waste supports better gut health. In turn, a colonic supports your body's ability to gain balance and overall longevity.
The Origin of Colonics
Colonic hydrotherapy dates back to Ancient Egyptian and Indian times. It was a central form in which prevention was used as a part of each culture. Both cultures believed that all forms of disease began in the intestinal system, or from the inability to properly digest food.
The Ayurvedic system of enemas consisted of treatments that were done infrequently (e.g. one time per year). It not only included water but often included warm oil, specifically which was believed to purify the body.
The Egyptian formula was more consistent, using the process one time per month for a period of three days. It was believed that the body should clear food from the system completely, specifically to combat any form of disease, all of which came from the digestion of food.
It wasn't until the early 1900s that the process became a part of holistic processes in the West. Devices and machines began to be used which allowed one to receive a hydrotherapy treatment that completely emptied the intestinal tract. The machinery which has developed is inclusive of a system that is able to reach the lower and upper intestinal tracts to clear out all unnecessary food and waste.
But Is It Really Beneficial?
There are plenty of myths and fallacies surrounding the concept of colonics and gut health. While it is known that all health begins in the brain of the gut, there is also a question if the hydrotherapy techniques are still supportive.
The functionality within the intestinal system has an impact on over 80% of other parts of our body and experiences. Most diseases and imbalances begin when a portion of your lower gut is imbalanced. When getting a colonic, it supports the following:
- Balance of overall mood
- Lower stress levels
- Regulated skin pH
- Reduced Allergies
- Increased cognitive functions
- Absorption of nutrients
- Reduced anxiety and depression
- Increased energy
- Strengthened immune system
- Reduced inflammation
Balancing Your Body
A colonic begins to balance your body with the direct "flushing" approach that takes out extra waste. Those who receive treatment once a year, can expect up to 15 days of added waste to be removed. In many cases, this can remove 5-10 pounds of excess substances in your intestinal system.
The immediate impact is the removal of blocks that may have slowed down the intestinal system from processing food and substances. These blocks will not only cause excess waste but also fire toxins into the system and create a state of imbalance.
Once removed, it resets your system to support better intestinal movements. It is known to assist in the reduction of constipation, diarrhea, and other irregular bowel movements. It also supports better absorption and balance of minerals within the system. Many believe it serves as "autointoxication" as you digest food.
The results of a colonic not only support immediate changes in your intestinal system. Following this procedure can increase your immunity and metabolism. When you reset your intestinal system, it communicates that your body can speed up the process of digestion. It also removes excess toxins and other stimulants that may have caused your immunity to drop, allowing a rebalance within your system.
For those that have excess growth of Candida (gut bacteria), this process will rebalance the system and allow the growth to slow and die off afterward. As a result, bloating, excess weight, and other difficulties from digestion will stop.
Balancing Your Emotions
Your digestive system is directly related to the emotions in your body. Gut health is the intelligence that triggers how you respond to the world and to certain actions which take place.
There is a brain-gut access system that is controlled by the nervous system, responding as neurotransmitters. In this process, the gut sends out a chemical reaction through your system that creates an immediate repsonse, usually which is sent as serotonin or a mood regulator. Feelings of anxiety, nervousness, depression, and other emotional reactions start with the "gut feeling" that triggers your nerves and glandular system.
If the gut tract is imbalanced, then the signals that are taking place to your brain will also send the wrong reactions. Stress, fatigue, depression, and other extreme emotions will begin to take place. This often occurs with too many toxins that are released in your system and which misfire chemical reactions.
By removing the excess reactions and reaching a state of balance, there is the ability for you to begin rebalancing the emotions and the communication between your brain and gut.
Balancing Your Mind
In many instances, it is believed that the mind is triggered through gut health. Brain fog, migraines, and headaches are some of the signals that your intestinal system is carrying too many toxins.
The basis of this is founded on the understanding that gut microorganisms communicate with the rest of the body. A vagus nerve is connected as a pathway to the brain from the gut. This sends bacteria to the brain and signals effects that need to take place. If the stimulus of the brain is signaled with an imbalance, it can create a reaction with the sharpness of the mind. Microbes and nutrition are both now seen as directly linked to mental health and the interactions which take place from the gut to the mind interaction.
The Holistic Perspective
The physical and mental impact of a colonic is compacted with the connection to the energetic and spiritual support of cleansing your gut.
The first, second, and third chakras are all influenced by the intestinal tract and it's the relationship to the overall well-being of your energetic system. This rules your sense of survival, perspectives toward emotions, relationship with yourself and others, as well as your core seat of power.
If you have a sense of fear, anxiety, depression, jealousy, and other emotions that are out of balance, this will help with the restoration of the area. Feelings of worthiness and your relationships with how you view yourself are also held in this area.
While these work with the lower chakras, if you have an imbalance with these energetics, then it directly impacts your view of the world and your relationship to your higher sense of self. By cleansing and removing these blocks physically, it changes the spiritual perspective you hold, allowing you to find truth and balance with the energy that is surrounding you and your environment.
The signal that you work with when going through a detox or cleanse, such as the colonic, states that you are ready to move back into balance from past blocks and energetics that have changed your perspective and way of interacting within the world.
