Coaching people is amazing.
It’s rewarding to push others to completely transform their lives.
For those who have a passion for helping others, this is wonderful.
But there are things to take into consideration.
We all have different personality types and what sounds great in theory might not be the best thing for you to pursue until you work on yourself.
To help the people you work with in the best way possible, you need to put your best foot forward when coaching people.
To do that, it’s more than looking good on paper.
It’s about your coaching skills and your delivery.
Here’s what will show you if you’re cut out to be a life coach.
Do you enjoy spending the majority of your time with people?
Everyone has different social capabilities. Imagine spending twenty-five plus hours a week giving your all to people as an extremely introverted person. If you’re easily drained, it could lead to burnout. Some people prefer to spend the majority of their free time alone.
If you’re one of those people, it’s important to make sure you’re getting enough you time. It could be as simple as waking up a little earlier to meditate or planning times for yourself to frequently unplug.
Are you approachable?
This is a huge one. You want people to feel comfortable coming to you for life coaching. Some of the kindest people don’t realize that they’re extremely unapproachable. When new people see you, you don’t have much time to make a good first impression. You want to make them feel like they’re making the right decision by opening up to you.
Do you have a kind expression on your face? Do you have open body language? Do you have a calm voice?
It’s good to avoid abrasive behaviors like being short with your conversations or having your arms crossed.
Are you patient when coaching people?
Because your clients will progress at different paces, patience is a must. They’ll also have unique worldviews that you must adapt to. Sometimes, they’ll take a step forward then two steps back.
Here are some signs that you should work on this skill:
- You struggle to accept different views of life
- You get annoyed when people don’t do things the way you want them to
- You have rigid timelines
If these describe you don’t get discouraged. Here are a few ways to do better.
Do you listen more than you speak?
Have you ever tried to talk about your problems with someone who ended up doing most of the talking instead of you?
How did you feel after?
Probably not much better. And you don’t want your clients to feel this way either.
I’m not saying that you shouldn’t talk at all. But derailing the conversation makes it about you and not them. And it should always be about them and how they can find their answers with assistance from you.
Are you unbiased?
I get it, we all hold biases about something. It’s natural. But, if you find that you’re really attached to a certain method of doing things when you’re coaching people, that might not be great for your clients. Everyone is going to be different and it’s your duty to adjust and help meet your clients’ needs.
If you hold biases, understand what they are, and when they are and aren’t appropriate. Refrain from using all of your personal experiences as a blueprint for someone else.
Do you take care of your mind body and spirit?
I’m sure you’ve heard that you can’t pour from an empty cup. It’s true.
If you do, you’ll get compassion fatigue and lose passion. Not taking care of yourself can leave you bitter. If you eat junk food all the time and neglect your own needs and mental wellness, you’re going to have problems. It’s not fair to your clients, but most of all it isn’t fair to you.
In this kind of profession, you should take time to engage in things you love in life, make sure your relationships are healthy and take care of your health so you feel good.
Something that could help is a daily morning ritual that puts you in a positive state.
As a life coach the number one goal is to serve
You want to guide people in the direction that will allow them to live their best lives. It’s not always easy and sometimes takes a lot. Which is part of the reason I have a lot of respect for coaches and counselors.
If you have all of the characteristics I talked about above, then that’s great! Do what you can to keep them.
If you feel you don’t have them right now, then that’s not a bad thing! It just means that you need to really evaluate if coaching people is your purpose in life. If you know it is, all you need to do is work on attaining the qualities you don’t have while strengthening the ones you already do.
