Bulletproof Coffee: Do You Really Need It?

This is Lubnaa ....I am a passionate blogger and I love to write about all beautiful things that Life has given to us.

What Is Bulletproof Coffee?

One of the most popular recipes in dietary trends is bulletproof coffee, also known as buttered coffee or keto coffee, a drink that is often recommended or used as a replacement for breakfast.

It is basically a freshly brewed black coffee with a tablespoon of butter (from grass-fed cows) and a tablespoon of MCT or medium-chain triglycerides derived from coconut oil.

The recipe for bulletproof coffee was created and recorded by Dave Asprey, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur who recounts that he discovered the origin of this combination on a trip to Tibet when a local offered him a cup of Yak butter tea—a drink that Asprey says, "rejuvenated his mind and body."

After several years of research, Asprey modified the combination with new ingredients and created this drink that has become very popular among people who follow a low-carb diet, a ketogenic diet, or intermittent fasting. Several benefits have been attributed to bulletproof coffee such as increasing energy, providing satiety, improving concentration, and promoting weight loss.

The Paleo Recipe for Bulletproof Coffee

Ingredients to make a delicious Paleo Bulletproof Coffee:

  • 2 cups of coffee
  • 2 tablespoons of high-quality, organic butter (rich in omega 3, linoleic acid, and vitamin E)
  • 2 tablespoons of medium-chain fatty acid coconut oil

Mix in a blender to emulsify everything, resulting in a deliciously creamy coffee.

Butter (From Grass-Fed Cows)

Butter is a product of animal origin that is made from cow's milk and has become one of the most traditional and popular sources of fat around the world.

There is a lot of talk recently about grass-fed butter; research has shown that the composition and nutritional value of dairy products can vary significantly, depending on what the cows eat.

Butter from grass-fed cows contains important nutrients like vitamin A and vitamin K2, and appears to have a higher proportion of healthy fatty acids like omega-3s, which have been linked to different health benefits. It also contains more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) compared to conventional butter.

However, you should keep in mind that grass-fed butter is still a concentrated source of fat and calories, so its consumption should be carefully considered within your daily requirements.

MCT (Medium-Chain Triglycerides)

This is a supplement that has become very popular in recent years and is made from medium-chain triglycerides, a type of fat that is quickly digested and absorbed in the body so it can be used as an immediate source of energy.

MCT is usually obtained from coconut oil and several studies have shown that it can help increase stability and regulate food intake, prevent obesity, and contribute to weight loss.

Other studies have associated MCT with antimicrobial and antifungal effects, the control of diseases such as epilepsy and Alzheimer's, and with an improvement in lipid profiles among other benefits.

Is Bulletproof Coffee Good?

Many supporters or promoters of the ketogenic diet or a low-carbohydrate diet claim that this drink is an ideal choice to replace breakfast, however, though bulletproof coffee is high in fat and can provide energy and satiety, it is also low in nutrients compared to a balanced breakfast.

Remember that a keto or low-carb breakfast can still include a variety of foods such as eggs, avocado, cheeses, meats, non-starchy vegetables, and berries. These foods will ensure an optimal supply of nutrients without exceeding recommendations for daily carbohydrate consumption.

If you still decide to have a breakfast of coffee with butter, you should monitor the balance of your other meals during the day to avoid imbalances or nutritional deficiencies that can result in various health problems.

While this drink may bring you benefits, remember to consume it in moderation (and in the context of a balanced diet) due to its high content of saturated fat. Although this is a type of fat that has overcome its bad reputation and can be included in a healthy diet, it is also true that in excessive doses it can be harmful.

Why Bulletproof Coffee Will Replace Your Breakfast

Bulletproof coffee will boost your energy because this paleo coffee gives you a significant amount of energy through medium-chain fatty acids.
It can give you mental clarity and a capacity for concentration at a much higher level than classic coffee.

Bulletproof coffee is also great on a ketogenic diet because it provides energy for the day without any carbohydrate intake.

Finally, bulletproof coffee has positive effects on weight loss because it has an appetite suppressant effect that prevents your stomach from falling into your heels to trigger the 11 AM craving.

Things to Consider

Finally, you must bear in mind that each body is different and therefore not all people respond well to a high-fat diet. For this reason it is important that you seek the advice of an expert and that you pay attention to the signals of your body.

Coffee is a paleo drink that has many virtues for some.

However, many people have problems with coffee such as concentration disorders. Once the stimulating effect of caffeine has worn off, caffeine may deregulate mood, digestive problems, change insulin levels, increase cortisol secretion, and cause sleep disturbances.

Caffeine works for about six hours, so you should test whether it has positive or negative effects on your body.

Often times it is a matter of quantity, so you have to test your ideal coffee cup dosage (i.e. how much coffee you drink per day).

Bulletproof Coffee Tips

  1. Never add sugar to maintain the benefits of the coffee. If you do, gradually reduce it so that you don't add any more sugar in the short term.
  2. Choose organic and fair trade coffee to protect yourself from the treatment of industrial coffee products.
  3. Add unsalted organic butter from fatty grass-fed cows for the quality of nutrients and antioxidants.

Not a Magic Bullet

Two Reasons Not to Drink Bulletproof Coffee Often

  1. It is low in nutrients and vitamin content apart from butter.
  2. Scientific studies have found that an excess of caffeine can cause nervousness and anxiety, affect the quantity and quality of sleep, generate addictive responses, and slightly increase blood pressure.

Still, the rise of low-carb diets has led many people to experiment with new (or not-so-new) recipes and combinations to meet their daily nutrient and calorie requirements.
