BULIMIA NERVOSA: It's Enough to Make You PUKE!

According to Kate Moss

According to Kate Moss

It's Enough to Make You Sick!

It's Enough to Make You Sick!

Eating Disorders: In The Beginning..

Photoshopped visions of beauty un-flawed,

Deep in her heart and her psyche they gnawed.

Feeling un-pretty, un-worthy - and fat,

Deciding it's high time to deal with that.

Fad diets embarked on, each taking too long,

The craving for food - and for chewing - so strong.

Goals based in betrayal, yet attain them she will,

Soon naught else exists - as she barrels downhill!

Time and again, a race down the hall,

No one can find her - won't answer your call!

Now full-blown bulimic - she purges and binges,

While deep down inside, her self-esteem cringes!

Society's Disease

Society's Disease

Eating Disorders: The Result...

Rotted teeth and bloated, vessels break in haunted eyes,

Trapped helpless in The Cycle - can see her own demise!

Harder now to hide it - guilt and shame it's daily bread,

Self-respect and dignity? It doth nary leave a shred!

Once a happy little girl, with a future shining bright,

Peeked inside a magazine, and found she wasn't right.

Impressionable and young - she tried a secret trick,

Bulimia Nervosa - It's enough to make you SICK!

WANT MORE? I'MKAR'N IS FULL OF IT....

It is a truly sad thing that many go through, its truly sad that people can't see what they are doing to themselves.

Karen Silverman (author) on May 01, 2013:

@Lisa: Thank you Luv!

Lisa J Warner AKA Lisa Luv from Conneticut, USA on May 01, 2013:

It is a sad thing, which you have helped take out of the closet...

Karen Silverman (author) on April 24, 2013:

@Bizarrett81: I agree, dear - but - it is the individual WITH the bulimia who is usually the most secretive about it! That's what makes it tough - the shame, the hiding, the lies..

Sigh..

So good of you to drop by! Please - come again!

Elizabeth Barrett Kearney from Maine on April 24, 2013:

ImKarm23,

A powerful message that I think needs to be less taboo and considered more serious then it is. I actually just finished up a chapter on eating disorders in my psychology class. It is interesting but very sad how some people can feel this way, no matter how they look.... Voted up

Cat from New York on March 27, 2013:

ImKarn23,

Well I don't want to make you look like a bobble head :-).

I'm just glad I finally stumbled across your pages; I'm looking forward to reading as many as I can. Your super funny and quick-witted!

Karen Silverman (author) on March 26, 2013:

@Cantuhearmescream: Lol...you keep up all those compliments - my head won't fit thru the hub-door!

LOL..

(that means thanks in I'mKar'n lingo!)

So glad you enjoyed!

Cat from New York on March 26, 2013:

What an awesome job of putting a modern spin, cool beat and passion into an oh so important subject. I absolutely loved this! Thumbs up, awesome and beautiful.

Karen Silverman (author) on February 27, 2013:

@CrisSp: Hi, CrisSp! The media is definitely to blame - partially...

i was a gymnast that trained 6 hrs/day - and - it was rampant in that arena as well..

society is another factor - men seem to be allowed to be larger and age more gracefully - where as women are judged at every, um - curve...

i agree - educate - and start young! i truly feel that one of the biggest favors i ever did my kids was to NOT burden them with eating issues. i never owned a scale and didn't care if they 'finished everything on their plates'..

my motto is eat when you're hungry - stop when you're not - the time on the clock is not a factor..

its simple - and it's worked for me for over 50 years..

CrisSp from Sky Is The Limit Adventure on February 27, 2013:

Sickening but oh so true! Do we blame the media for this poor girl's mentality? I guess, education is the key.

So speaking of education, I'm spreading the words...voted up and passing along this good hub.

Thanks.

Shauna L Bowling from Central Florida on February 14, 2013:

That's a relief - then I certainly qualify! Tee hee!!

Karen Silverman (author) on February 14, 2013:

@Bravewarrior: Hi, Shauna!! So good to see you...been away for a week and down with the flu since..

i think you read the poem i wrote called 'the endomorph's lament'?..i did a lot of research of body types about 2 years ago - and let me tell you - MEN PREFER A LITTLE MEAT ON THE BONE - and most prefer au naturale as well..

Shauna L Bowling from Central Florida on February 13, 2013:

Leslie, once upon a time ago, the perfect woman was voluputous and curvy. Now they have fake boobs and all their bones sticking out. I wonder what today's man prefers? Might be worth taking a poll!

Karen Silverman (author) on December 19, 2012:

@Irc7815: Lol..funny you should mention that - one of my nicknames besides : Lelly, Lesyl, and Essie - was Sassy..

odd, don't you think, Linda? Lol...

Linda Crist from Central Virginia on December 18, 2012:

Girl, you are a real powerhouse. What a great write. You've got more attitude and sass than anyone I know. Voted up and awesome.

Karen Silverman (author) on December 07, 2012:

@DeborahBrooks: Good morning, my friend! It hits home for me as well - having witnessed the devastation personally..(from other's experiences - not my own thankfully..)..

Merry Christmas to you, Deb - i accept you as you are - perfectly YOU!

Deborah Brooks Langford from Brownsville,TX on December 07, 2012:

Leslie my dear....this hub hits home on so many levels.. wanting to be thin so bad.. or eating everything in site.. with screwed up brains.. and TV and advertising telling us we have to be thin ... to be accepted.. in this screwy world..

great hub my dear

sharing

Merry Christmas

Debbie

Karen Silverman (author) on November 19, 2012:

@Marcoujor: I think parents/schools/whatever are missing something...we need to teach REAL LIFE - along with a little sentence structure..lol..

but seriously - It's ridiculous - critical thinking seems to be frowned upon - and self-esteem is allowed to shrink while egos expand to monstrous proportion! Love you AND your support and encouragement, Maria! I hope you know i feel the same...

Maria Jordan from Jeffersonville PA on November 19, 2012:

This would leave such an impression on those who are bulemics...

Leslie, You have a way of succinctly expressing the issue in a powerful and authentic manner.

In this case, I am grateful you were a miserable failure.

Voted UP and UAI. Hugs, Maria

Karen Silverman (author) on October 18, 2012:

@HLPhoenix: 'slightly nauseating'....(that'd funny, even tho the subject is far from...)..

Thanks for taking the time to read, comment - and SHARE!

HLPhoenix on October 17, 2012:

Excellent, very well done, educational... if slightly nauseating Hub. :) Sharing.

Karen Silverman (author) on September 27, 2012:

@Dghbrh: Thank you. Interestingly, hubpages didn't want to publish it! They said it was too much 'adult' content! I had to fight for it to be published in the first place - then they made me change the pictures - and finally they disabled any advertising - as they have on almost HALF of my hubs! Sigh..I guess i should write more love stories and learn to make paper guitars...lol

Karen Silverman (author) on September 27, 2012:

@Sueswan: Perfect analogy, Sue! Such a sad, sad, sad story! Such talent and such horrible self-image! You said it - what a waste! And, she isn't the only one...

deergha from ...... a place beyond now and beyond here !!! on September 26, 2012:

Nice and a practical hub with a very relevant topic. votes up and away

Sueswan on September 26, 2012:

Hi Leslie,

"Goals based in betrayal, yet attain them she will"

I thought of Karen Carpenter . What a waste of life and talent.

Anywho..thanks for the visit and the vote, Rolly..

(lol)

Rolly A Chabot from Alberta Canada on September 21, 2012:

Morning again ImKarn23... what a shame it is that we have seen this happen in our younger generation. Often brought on by the images portrayed on TV and the media.

Thank you for writing this... well done and voted up and away...

Hugs from Alberta (BC still)

Nice piece of work my friend

Karen Silverman (author) on August 22, 2012:

@Lady_E: I know you do - i've seen your tweets a few times! Thank you dear!

Elena from London, UK on August 22, 2012:

Sad and even more that it's on the increase. I run an account on twitter @Care4Anorexics and will tweet this a few times. Thanks for writing.

I partly blame the inventor of "air brushing."

Karen Silverman (author) on August 18, 2012:

@GOAH: gave it the old college try in oregon - it takes more than nerve - it takes skills i clearly didn't have...thank goodness..

GOAH on August 18, 2012:

Don't know why I thought I had read this... thumbs way up... still sometimes as I am enjoying something I shouldn't be eating I wish I had the nerve to try to throw it up...

Karen Silverman (author) on August 11, 2012:

@Nellrose: Thanks for stopping by, Nell! I agree with you...obviously!

Nell Rose from England on August 11, 2012:

Wow! you certainly hit this one on the head, so, so true! so many little girls see those pictures and just think they are real, feeling fat and ugly they start to binge and bring it back up, so sad and so unnecessary these days, when there is so much help out there, saying that when the stupid companies who airbrush every model and celeb insist on hiding their heads in the sand, what the heck are the kids supposed to do? voted up and awesome, nell

Karen Silverman (author) on August 11, 2012:

@Billybuc: Couldn't agree more, Bill!

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on August 11, 2012:

I had a couple students who suffered from this....one almost died.....thank you for bringing this to the attention of everyone here....no, it is no laughing matter.

Karen Silverman (author) on August 10, 2012:

@WayneBrown: honored that you took the time, Wayne! Thanks for the support! Hey...i thought we were already each other's 'followers'...lol...better late than never, eh?

Wayne Brown from Texas on August 10, 2012:

You really nailed this one by painting such a vivid picture of something that is worse than a disease....an addiction with images seen through twisted eyes. Fantastic! Up and Awesome. WB

Karen Silverman (author) on August 09, 2012:

@DeborahBrooks: Coming from you, Deb - HUGE compliment! Thank you dear - we need to 'share' more!

Karen Silverman (author) on August 09, 2012:

@Pagesvoice: Appreciate your support, D! Big time! I'm shocked they 'allowed' advertising on this..something strange here..don't know why pulled - don't know why re pub'ed - don't know why there's advertising..hmmm..

Deborah Brooks Langford from Brownsville,TX on August 09, 2012:

wow Leslie,.. you said it like it is.. magazines make me sick with these perfect women that are not really perfect and these poor young women get in thier heads they do not look good enough or skinny enough.. Great poem .. I loved it.. sharing

Debbie

Karen Silverman (author) on August 09, 2012:

@Picadilly: I can't think of a nicer compliment! Thank you, missy P!

Priscill Anne Alvik from Schaumburg, IL on August 09, 2012:

Yeah it got posted!!! Your message is well heard around the globe via this and that Missy L.!!!! Your poem was worth the fight to get published!!! xoxo

Dennis L. Page from New York/Pennsylvania border on August 09, 2012:

Voted up, awesome, useful and interesting. Well, well, well my friend you have conveyed a most powerful and meaningful message. I have Tweeted this and will share on FB. Honestly, as a dad to 3 adult girls my eyes are filled with tears in thanksgiving they never experienced this horrible affliction. On a positive note I am glad to see the great Google ads on this post. You do have a way with words Ms. L.

Karen Silverman (author) on August 09, 2012:

@Sheilaluecht: Thanks, Sheila! I was very surprised when HP's unpublished it and am VERY happy they changed their minds! I did change all the pictures, as they were 'pixilated', but, that didn't change the 'adult content' in any way - and in fact - the original photo still shows up when posted on social media sites!

Sheila Luecht on August 09, 2012:

Well done! This is a topic which resonates with many. Growing up is hard enough without this kind of influence.

Karen Silverman (author) on August 05, 2012:

@Rebeccamealey: All addictions are drugs, yes? Thanks for stopping by, Rebecca (my daughters middle name...)

Rebecca Mealey from Northeastern Georgia, USA on August 05, 2012:

A powerful message! Bulimia sounds as bad as heavy drugs. Thanks for sharing this disturbing yet important information.

Karen Silverman (author) on August 05, 2012:

@Jessica: Hi, Jessica! So nice to see you! It's all about lifestyle - not dieting!

Jessica on August 05, 2012:

Nicely done, ImKarn. Sad topic, but one that needs the awareness. The price of being thin for some is destruction of their own bodies. I would give just about anything to lose this weight, but not that. I will do it the hard way, long way... Thanks for sharing!

Karen Silverman (author) on August 05, 2012:

@AKTurner: Grrrrrrish? I like that! lol. Honestly, AK - i wish i could write 'flowers and rainbows', but what seems to need to come out is more 'psycho society' lol...(psycho society...hmmmm...i like that too...)

Karen Silverman (author) on August 05, 2012:

@Cleaner3: love ya too, M! Thanks for taking the time!

Joseph A K Turner from West Yorkshire on August 05, 2012:

nice one, you never shy away from the more grrrish topics, I like that!

cleaner3 on August 04, 2012:

society puts the stigma of weight on the young girls, who have enough pressure from self esteem issues. great informative poetry K.

love ya girl.

Karen Silverman (author) on August 04, 2012:

@Alwaysexploring: Exactly ! It's a cycle that starts out seemingly innocently enough! People have to know the signs early - before it's too late and it ruins a life! Thanks for taking the time, Always!

Ruby Jean Richert from Southern Illinois on August 04, 2012:

This is so true. Magazines full of skinny girls, a young girl looks at the pictures, then begins to diet, finally starving, then learning to purge. This is such a familiar story. I had a friend who would chew the bite then spit it out. She was not a teen, she was in her 30's. Great piece of writing..

Karen Silverman (author) on August 04, 2012:

@Kashmir56: Thank you, Kashmir!

Thomas Silvia from Massachusetts on August 04, 2012:

Hi my friend, so very beautifully written and so true .

Vote up and more !!!

Karen Silverman (author) on August 04, 2012:

@Phoenix2327: Societal pressure? She took up ballet or gymnastics? Lack of self esteem? Who knows what the 'trigger' is, but the end result can be devastating. I saw it first hand when 2 olympic level gymnasts were sent home because their bulimia controlled them - not vice versa! They weren't skinny either..it's a fallacy that bulimics are skinny unless they are anorexic as well..

Karen Silverman (author) on August 04, 2012:

@Mhatter99: Hi, M! I hope so too! Thanks!!

Zulma Burgos-Dudgeon from United Kingdom on August 04, 2012:

'Once a happy little girl, with a future oh, so bright,'

So poignant. Why did it all go wrong?

Martin Kloess from San Francisco on August 03, 2012:

On it. I hope some of my followers are reading your articles

Terry Chestnutt from Cleveland, Ohio on August 03, 2012:

Sad. No idea what the answer to that one is. Maybe a lot of confidence building attention. Hard to come by, though.

Karen Silverman (author) on August 03, 2012:

@WilliamLRobb: Thank you sir! Yes, feeling it! Watching the Olympics and...remembering the pressure to stay skinny! Luckily - i was a miserable failure at this dangerous weight loss method - which truly annoyed me at the time..lol

William L Robb from Las Vegas, Nevada on August 03, 2012:

Very good article some feeling in it
