My husband is back on his feet without crutches! I believe it's because we put together a diet strategy incorporating healing foods.
Here's my experience when I saw my husband's broken ankle xrays for the first time. I knew the surgeons would be operating to insert a plate and screws to hold the broken bones in his ankle and tibia together when they wheeled him into surgery, but I had no idea what the hardware would look like until his broken ankle xrays appeared on the screen.
The size of the wounds surprised me when his bandages were first removed. At that moment it was clear any plates they'd used to hold his bones together were larger than I had imagined.
The doctor very kindly agreed to me taking photos of his broken ankle x-rays while they were displayed on the screen. I am sharing the photos with you here in case you have a friend or family member who had similar surgery but you missed the chance to see their broken ankle xrays. Here's an example of the plate and screws used by orthopaedic surgeons.

My Reaction to Broken Ankle Xray
It was important for me to see the damage, but I wasn't prepared for my physical response to his broken ankle xray. As I raised my camera to focus on the break, I was forcing myself to concentrate and capture an image that I could reflect on later.
The damaged ankle wasn't even mine, yet I felt ill. As I looked at this x ray on the screen, I felt my head drop and my shoulders scrunch. My husband lay on a bed on the opposite side of the room with his bandages removed. I was conscious of the fact that he would see my reaction to the x-rays so I struggled to make myself stand tall.
I am a great believer in the need for gathering as much information as possible when trying to address any problem, particularly a medical problem. If I can understand what needs to be achieved, I can search for a solution. That's why it was important for me to pay attention to the broken ankle xrays.

The doctor beside me stood patiently as I looked at each image. My youngest daughter, then 12, was in the room and came to stand slightly behind my line of vision. When she asked which of the bones were broken on each image, I pointed out the breaks. Then I took a photo.
The doctor, a younger member of the orthopaedic team, clicked to the next x ray each time I lowered my camera. He chatted with me and explained the plates and screws as though I was familiar with all his medical terms and comfortable with the images of damage on the screen before me. Nothing could have been further from the truth.
It obviously takes a particular type of person to be a surgeon. A surgeon looks at a broken ankle xray and sees a challenge. A bone is just a bone, and a stainless steel plate is just one of the tools of their trade. I respect their ability to distance themselves from the emotion and pain associated with broken bones. Patients need surgeons who can fearlessly strive to fix a major problem without being overwhelmed by sentiment.
Yet as I look at these broken ankle x-rays in the privacy of my own home, I am still slightly overwhelmed.

I don't know how many people with broken bones receive ongoing monitoring of the performance of plates and screws after surgery. We are very fortunate to have access to a dedicated team of surgeons who continue to show interest in my husband's recovery. Access to xrays helps determine appropriate broken ankle physical therapy.
In the interests of sharing information about what to expect if you suffer a broken ankle that requires similar treatment, I am including examples from the 'gravity view' xrays and the series of 'weight bearing' x-rays taken a few months after surgery. My husband says the most difficult aspect of the weight bearing xrays was holding his balance.

More Than Just Broken Bones
I try to look at these photos and distance myself, seeing just broken bones. 'It is really very simple,' I say to myself. 'Just look at the damage. It is there in black and white.' Seeking information and knowledge comes easy. I will ask appropriate questions, search for useful answers, and comfortably process and analyse any relevant information ... on just about any topic. But I cannot look at his broken ankle xrays and just see broken bones.
Wrapped up in the package is the memory of watching my husband falling from a great height and my fear that when he landed he might die; the relief when he landed on his feet not his head. And a perverse kind of pleasure that he broke his ankle when he hit the ground, because he could have broken his neck.

A broken ankle is no excuse for being idle, in my husband's mind, even if he does have the x rays to justify spending time with his foot up.
The surgeons predict future arthritis after surgery of this type but we are confident we can prevent arthritis with natural remedies from nature's medicine chest (in normal circumstances) so that doesn't frighten us as much as it might.
Just what difference a stainless steel plate and a bunch of screws through his bones will make remains to be seen. Whatever the outcome, I will look occasionally at his broken ankle xrays and remain grateful to the surgeons who repaired the damage in a way that, just years ago, was impossible.
Alternatives to Old-Fashioned Crutches
For those who are interested (and particularly those who require encouragement that they might be back on their feet quite promptly), it only took about three months before my husband had recovered enough to walk without crutches.
He was diligent about exercising his ankle, deliberately ate foods to encourage repair of broken bones, patiently endured my applications of comfrey, and in the early months always wore a sturdy work boot and an elastic support (with velcro strips) to provide extra support for his ankle while out and about.
In many ways he has been very lucky. But much of his successful recovery is due to personal effort.
If you have a broken ankle, I encourage you to take positive action to speed and encourage your own healing. As these broken ankle x-rays show, my husband's injury was significant. His speedy recovery was unexpected ... but he has proven it is achievable.

I've been told that Turmeric is a wonder 'drug'. It's become very popular in France, so I'm told.
30g of turmeric powder
120 ml of water- or more in reserve if needed - about 1 cup. depending on your make of turmeric you might need more.
1 teaspoons (5g) of freshly ground black pepper
35ml Raw cold pressed Coconut Oil/cold pressed or extra virgin olive oil.
1 tablespoon of honey (don't use golden syrup)
1. Place Turmeric and water into a pan and put on a low heat and simmer.DO NOT ALLOW BOIL
2. Simmer for approximately 7-10 mins
3. Remove from the heat, stir in the coconut oil/olive oil and freshly ground black pepper and honey
4. Mix well and leave to cool. Once cool place in your chosen storage container
this will keep for 2-3 weeks in the fridge
Take a quarter of a teaspoon 3 times a day with food for about 7 days, increase the does by a quarter of a teaspoon
each week until desired affect if found. Check with your GP if you take prescribed medication before taking so they are aware you are starting to take turmeric. lots of info on the internet about turmeric and it's benefits

It makes sense to go ahead with the ultrasound, particularly if the cost of the ultrasound is covered by health insurance. There may still be clues about what the problem is/was.
Losing weight is good. So is the lack of pain. But I am still amazed that you can see the heads of the screws beneath your skin. Running my hand over my husband's plate and screws, I can't feel anything. He says he's not aware of the screws at all.
I'm pleased the cost of Mobicosa is no longer so high in the UK, but it is no help to you if local suppliers are out of stock. Just out of interest, I will email and ask the friendly US supplier how much they charge to post to your part of the world.
I buy quite a few things from the US and some places charge a ridiculous amount for international postage, while others are surprisingly reasonable. I've not asked the American supplier to post Mobicosa internationally, but I've been really happy with how quickly they've sent it to my friends in North America. I keep getting good, positive feedback. :)
Stay tuned, and I'll let you know what I find out about international post. (When I lived in the UK, I considered UK postage internationally to be highway robbery. Not sure how it compares now.)

Lost about 20lb, but not coming off the waistline . Had a pain under bottom back rib and was aggravating it bouncing about on a dumper whilst digging lakes. A month after finishing with the dumper, noticed a soft swelling under my bottom right front rib. GP booked me in for an ultra-sound scan that will be this coming Monday. A bit like getting jump leads out of the boot to start a car and it then starts before they are connected, as soon as the scan was booked, the pain started to go away. Feeling a bit more workish than a month ago, probably down to the weight loss and lack of pain. The pain was exhausting, had to lay down for 20 minutes after doing up my boot laces. Not had any X-rays on the ankle. Don't feel anything down there. Wear boots all the time as advised by the surgeons. Dred knocking the heads of the screws that can be seen under the skin. Your link was for a US retailer, so I guess their price was in US$ for delivery in the US. The price of Mobicosa in the UK appears to have come down a lot, but they are out of stock. I guess it might go up due to the currency dealers using Brexit as an excuse to hammer Sterling.

Hi RJ. Nice to see you're sharing your Mobicosa with friends. I've been giving it as gifts to others for the past 20 years, and I think most of them now 'pass it on' to others. I never walked backwards down stairs, but I used to walk backwards up hills.
No surprises for me about the dog's improvement. I've used Technyflex (http://newzealandsbest.com/collections/canine) on dogs, as well as the equine and feline versions. Got to love the green-lipped mussel. :)
It is more than a year since you gave me your last update. Have you managed to lose some weight? Is your heart okay? And have they given you any xrays to check out how your ankle is looking these days?

The last lot I bought was from Natural Health NZ 2002 Ltd, but I was going to order some for a friend in France recently only to find that postage had now been added. I have let him have some of mine, along with some Musselflex tablets that are available here, and two weeks later he had noticed a marked improvement. The pain in his knees meant he had to walk backwards down stairs. Now he can walk half a mile before he feels any pain.
I spoke to someone whose dog was walking on 3 legs due to Arthritis(only 3 years old and been treated by the vet for 10 months). After two weeks on some stuff called Yumove, which has the Green-lipped Mussel extract in it, the dog was walking normally. Imove is the stuff that humans can take.
My GP wasn't concerned about the screws in my leg showing as long as I wasn't either.

If your doctor says the rest of your break will be healed within 4 to 6 weeks, that's good news. If your doctor says you can walk with a stick, that's what you should be doing.
I do not know enough about broken bones to offer you any more advice, but I do hope your leg heals quickly. Good luck!

I had a an operation on my leg(i guess its the fibula part) and had put 2 screws.Its now 6 weeks and the bantage is now removed.And in xray 75% of the heal is ok and the doc told that the rest will be healed with 4 to 6 weeks.Presently I am walking with a stick so tat not much stress is given to the leg.Is it true that the heal will be completed within 4 to 6 weeks?Is there any problem in walking with the sticks now?

Can you go back to the doctor, RJ, and request some x-rays (including a weight-bearing x-ray which will show if there's cartilage in place) now that its a couple of years since your surgery? It sounds like your swelling has gone if you can feel the screws through your skin. Your doctor might recommend removing the hardware.
I was hoping by now you'd be fine. It certainly sounds like you're better than you were, but ongoing discomfort doesn't sound very fair to you.

I had not realised that having the ironwork removed was an option. I can now see and feel some of my screws under the skin(8 up the outside), dredding giving them a knock, but I always wear boots nowadays anyway. The ankle feels stiff in the morning, and there is a 'feeling', not pain most of the time. 2 years, 2 weeks since I did it. The doctor who discharged me, said I would suffer arthritic pain, because "It really was a hell of a mess", but no more than a 'feeling' as yet.

Like you, Kauffman, my husband has no problems with the hardware in his leg. We have discussed the pros and cons of having it removed but his ankle functions fine. He went walking in the Scottish highlands without trouble, and that was the real test for him.
Whenever we see stories on the tv about SuperBugs and hospitals, he says that's why he won't be having unnecessary surgery. :)
I'm not aware of any long-term problems associated with the plates, are you? That'll be something to keep an eye out for.

Not sure why I didn't get published yesterday so I'll try again. I got some Mobicosa gel from NZ at half the UK price and am still rubbing it in daily. The ankle is still stiff when I wake up each morning, but pain level is hardly noticeable, except if I try to run. The hospital forecast the stiffness. The 3-mile walk that was taking 45 minutes before the break, now takes 10 minutes longer, but that is probably down to the need to lose some weight. It's nearly 2 years since the break and in another 2 years, I'll be 70, so I don't suppose I can complain. More later.

I'm still rubbing in the Mobicosa every day. I got some from NZ at half the UK price. I also take a Cod-Liver oil capsule every morning. The ankle is not yet down to the same size as the other one. I wear boots most of the time. Did not feel any cold in it during the Winter, something I was told to expect. I got a little pain in the instep when I ran across the road this week, so won't be running any more. I was told to expect stiffness after a day's work and it is quite stiff when I wake up every morning. Apart from that everything seems back to normal. I can just about 'feel' it all the time, but can't really call it 'pain'. Less than 1 on the 1-10 scale that doctors mention, but the hospital told be that 'farmers don't feel pain' anyway. I could do with losing 30-40 lb, and might manage some of that this Summer. That should help. I was thanked by someone for recommending Comfrey Oil for a leg problem he had. It will be 2 years come mid-summer's day that I broke my ankle. In another 2 years, I'll be 70. The 2.9 mile walk that was taking 45 minutes before the accident, now takes a few minutes longer, but that might come down if I lose some weight. I'll have to get copies of my X-rays from the hospital. More later.

My husband has spent much of the past week working on a roof - with his ankle bent to accommodate the roof slant. I'm surprised he's not complained about his ankle once. :)
He didn't have surgery on his torn ligament, so I guess it must have healed / strengthened without intervention. Otherwise I suspect he'd be in more trouble by now.

I think it was just over 3 weeks after the operation that I got back in the car, still in plaster. Still taking 4 Cod Liver Oil capsules a day, and applying MusselFlex Gel 3-4 times a day. I'll try to post a photo of both ankles sometime.

In the time that we've been corresponding, I've noticed that there's not much that will stop you from driving. :) It sounds as though you are in much better shape than you were when we first spoke, and that's a good thing!

There was an American chap out TV some years back, advocating Cod Liver Oil because he reckoned we Brits drank too much tea that dried out everything including skin. He reckoned it would 'oil joints' and get rid or wrinkles. He recommended a tablespoonful a day for 6 months and a tablespoonful once a week there after. Other people have said take a tablespoonful a day until wax comes out of your ears. I don't think the 4 capsules of less than 0.5ml each that I am taking, is anything to worry about. When I visited the GP, I asked if I could have a hearing test. He looked in my ears and said they were full of wax, and to get the nurses to wash them out before he could book a hearing test. When I visited the heart specialist, he looked at the test results and said he didn't know why I had come to see him. He asked me to describe what had happened and then told me to come back in 6 months time. Because of the possible heart problem, the GP told me not to drive. I heeded that advice for about 10 minutes. The heart specialist said it was normal not to drive for 6 months is something unexplained happened but as, by then, it was nearly 5 months since it happened.......... I feel OK.

I cringe at the thought of your accident. How on earth did you get back up the stairs with such a bad injury?
How long since your accident? Hopefully you won't always have the pain. My husband, fortunately, is doing fine and spends all day every day on his feet. I remind him from time to time that he might be pushing his luck when I see him digging holes or walking across uneven ground, but he rarely takes time out to rest.

I urge you to be careful taking 4 times the recommended daily dose of anything ... including cod liver oil. Don't stress your body at this time. It is working hard to get you back on your feet (excuse the pun), and that includes your digestive system.
Instead of rubbing green lipped mussel gel into your skin, just lightly put in on your skin ... and then talk to it to encourage it to be absorbed if you're not confident it can do the job unaided. lol. With the mobicosa, there's no need to rub. I'm guessing it should be the same with your alternative products.
If you are not feeling you are getting the same results as you did with mobicosa caps and/or gel, why not switch back? You'll be glad you did if it cuts your recovery time by months. Go shopping on the internet and find the cheapest deal you can. I'm sure you can have the products posted to you by online shops anywhere in the world.
About your ankle exercise and lifting your weight ... Have you considered doing the action while sitting in your chair? Get the movement happening as often as possible, and then add your weight bit by bit. Perhaps lean on your couch or your kitchen table so your ankle doesn't need to support your whole body weight all the time.

Back again! I had a lot of swelling over Xmas and more pain than when I had the accident. I had gone for a 3 mile walk with a high lace-up boot and the swelling seemed to be at about the top of the screwed plate(screw worked loose, I thought), so I went back to wearing sandals for about 3 months. The fracture clinic doctor recommended a high boot, but the Physio said get as much movement in the ankle as possible. Didn't bother with the doctor. The Pernaton seemed to dry the skin out and I think I was rubbing it in too hard because I got a rash and had to leave off the gels completely. I think the Musselflex gel is better than the Pernaton. The Musselflex tablets taste really fishy. I'll get some more when I run out of the Ultra capsules that I am using at the moment. I can lift all my weight about 2-3 inches off the ground with the injured ankle know. Feels a little stiff, but nowhere near what I was told to expect. Taking 4 times the recommended daily dose of Cod Liver Oil capsules.

Good article, but it brought back some unpleasant memories. I can understand everything your husband went through. I broke my ankle clear in half and dislocated my foot after falling down my basement stairs. I was three months in recovery and almost went stir crazy laying around. Now, with all this metal in me, I have pain all the time, especially when it rains or snows. I am hoping my ankle will recover enough that the surgeon will remove all the hardware. I can only hope. .. Sure miss wearing my pumps!

I wrote a hub about the foods my husband was eating to strengthen his bones, including pumpkin and peas. He didn't put on any extra weight.
Interesting what you are saying about the Mobicosa. You'll have to decide whether or not to spend the extra pounds getting another bottle. If it is helping you though, it is probably worth the investment. You clearly had a much greater improvement during those two weeks than you'd had before. Something must have been working. :)

The Mobicosa appears to be more concentrated GLM. I was only using a small amount due to the price. I think 100ml lasted 2 weeks, at 3 times a day. The fracture clinic consultant seemed surprised at the improvement during that 2 weeks, but it's always been in the back of my mind that he was looking at the wrong x-rays the time before. They looked the same to me! Not really sure how the 2 products compare. Time is a great healer, after all. What appears to have happened is that I have put on weight since the bones seem to have healed. I read that 6,000 calories a day were appropriate for healing bones and was stuffing myself with 500gms of Fat-free yoghurt, tins of sardines, lots of milk and bread, peanut butter, etc., etc., etc. I am now trying to lose the weight I have put on since the bone healing appeared to be complete. Lost a few pounds this week and have to try to get down some more before I see the heart specialist on the Nov 27th. They didn't keep me in after the echocardiogram yesterday, so I don't suppose there is anything urgently wrong.

Interesting that you are not getting the same results from the cheaper variety. I am very careful to only recommend Mobicosa because that's what we use. In theory I guess I could post you some from here, but it still wouldn't come in as cheaply as you're buying the Pernaton. If it working, perhaps you're best off just using twice as much of it.

My mother's cousin went to live in NZ about 90 years ago. They used to send us Xmas cakes during and after WW2 but I would not know how to contact them now. If I didn't rub in the Mobicosa gel, it would just run off onto the floor with the body heat. I was applying Oil of Comfrey first and that made it even more runny. If I could get Mobicosa for twice the price of Pernaton per 100ml, I probably would, as I am using a lot more Pernaton. My ankle was about the size of a big grapefruit and it was about 3 hours after the accident that the A and E doctor managed to pull it back into line. After 4 days of the ice treatment, they decided to operate because they couldn't wait any longer. They all said it was very swollen and the last consultant in the fracture clinic described it as 'a hell of a mess', having seen the original X-rays. He thought the surgeon had done a pretty marvelous job. I was at the same building college as the surgeon's older brother, but he didn't seem to want to talk about him! The diagrams on the wall in the Physio's department looked as if I had a very typical break.

We don't bother rubbing the gel in, RJ. We just smooth it over and leave it to soak in. You've seen the photo of my husband's ankle an hour after he fell out of the tree and broke it ... there's a pic above alongside the link to my first hub. I simply took the lid off the bottle, poured it into my hand and tried to wipe it over as much of his ankle as possible. Absolutely no rubbing.
Just out of interest, how swollen was your ankle after breaking it? I've never seen anyone else's injured ankle but the doctors kept raving about the extraordinary absence of swelling.
The New Zealand dollar is worth about half a British pound. The Aussie dollar is about 60p. There's certainly a big saving if you just have to pay for the bottle, but I'm not sure if it is worth it after adding all the other expenses.
You don't happen to have friends in NZ do you? They could wrap some in Xmas paper and post it to you. I can't imagine there would be a customs hassle with posting it directly to you.

I woke up this morning to find one of the sensors had become disconnected, so I don't know if the 24 hr tape recording of my heart processes will have to be repeated when I go back this afternoon for an echocardiogram. I tried deep heat once but that was all. Usual heat! The Pernaton feels cool at first and warm a little afterwards, but I spend so much time rubbing it it that perhaps I don't notice it. I am considering getting Mobicosa direct from down under and risking the import duty and VAT that we sometimes get charged, along with an £8 charge for customs opening up the package and re-delivering by local postal service. The prices I have seen are in $'s, is that AU$ or US$ ??? I have been discharged by the fracture clinic and physiotherapy, the rest is up to me. The Fracture Clinic consultant(the 4th one I've seen) told me that the ankle would be stiff and swollen after a day's work for ever more. I hope to prove him wrong! It seems a little better every week. The swelling after a few hours works is gradually getting less. More swelling if I wear sandals, but the weather is getting a little Autumnal now so the boots are more regularly in use. About 14 hours of darkness at the moment so plenty of time for rest.

Nobody has ever mentioned wearing sandals to my husband. We were advised he should use a boot for support when outside the house and to have bare feet when inside doing his ankle exercises. He also wears an elastic support brace inside the boot, for both support and comfort (ie to reduce rubbing.) Have you been writing the alphabet with your foot? That will get 'as much movement in the ankle as possible' and should keep your physio happy.
Gee those prices do look steep! I wonder how much it would cost if you bought direct from the NZ manufacturer's website and had the products posted to the UK. We buy lots of things from the northern hemisphere and have them sent to us. Maybe send them an email and ask.
About the heat ... I have never experienced (or expected) warmth from the gel. You're not using Deep Heat on your ankle are you? I wouldn't consider that a very good option right now but of course I'm not a doctor or a physio. I combine personal experience (mine and others I trust) with extensive research when making health decisions. I'm interested in hearing your feedback if you have tried it.

Still taking Mobicosa capsules, 2 capsules twice a day and 2 cod-liver-oil capsules twice a day. I was taking just 2 of each a day, but have doubled them up. I've got some Musselflex tablets from Holland and Barrett for when the Mobicosa capsules run out. http://www.naturalhealthuk.co.uk/capsules.html supplied the Mobicosa capsules and gel. Have a look at the prices! The physiotherapist told me to get as much movement in the ankle as possible so I was wearing sandals, but the fracture clinic doctor advised wearing a tight fitting boot for support. Not sure who to take notice of! I can't get my normal shoe on anyway and not many shoes are available bigger than my UK12. Not so much swelling after a day wearing boots! I have some Lacrosse boots that lace up high but they really bight into the wasted calf mussel. The Pernaton is definitely warmer than the Mobicosa gel but not for long. Nothing like as hot as Deep Heat. I start the checks on my heart tomorrow.

That's great, Rjimmer. Sounds like you are well on the road to recovery. Thanks for sharing the name of the cheaper product. I don't know if it available locally or not. I notice it is made in Switzerland so I guess the NZ product will be cheaper to ship to Australia. Certainly the information on Pernaton Gel says it is made from NZ greenlipped mussels (that's the key ingredient we want) and without heat. I have been told many times that cold-pressed NZ g/l mussel is far more effective than processing with heat so that's great.
I'm not sure what the role is of some of the ingredients listed on a webpage I visited to learn more about Pernaton, but if it is working for you then obviously it is a very good alternative.
Makes no difference to me which product people use - I am just excited about the positive results. If you can buy it cheaper, you can use more of it without it hurting the wallet. Sounds ideal to me! :)

Another milestone this week. I am able to walk upstairs on the ball of the foot without relying on the handrail. I am using the Pernaton Gel every day, much cheaper than Mobicosa over here. c£5 per 100ml compared to £23 for Mobicosa. The swelling seems to be less at the end of a days work that it was a few weeks ago, and is almost gone by the morning.

Ligament update ...
I love the medical system here in Australia. My husband has already been given an ultrasound to check the state of the ligaments in his ankle. They found two in perfect condition, and one is badly torn. Apparently it is in danger of snapping so he has been told to completely restrict his ankle movement (no more writing the alphabet with his foot, lol) until he returns to the specialist.
It seems likely they will operate again to repair the ligament.

Here's an exercise my husband believes probably helped him the most. He said it was really hard to do in the beginning, took a lot of effort and concentration to achieve, and was a clear indication for him when his ankle was improving.
Write the alphabet in the air with your foot. Lowercase then uppercase. Don't move your knee, just make your ankle work. He did it a lot, and still does it sometimes to ensure he's getting a full range of movement.
I encouraged him to use his other ankle as well to break the boredom and in case it stimulated the other side of his brain. :)

My swelling goes down(mostly) after about 2 hours on the bed with the ankle above heart level. By morning there is not much left, but by the end of the day, it is the size of a grapefruit if I haven't rested. Mainly fluid pressure, perhaps. They have told me to raise up on tiptoes with as much weight on the damaged leg as possible 30 times, four times a day. My calf mussel is very wasted. I can't raise up on tiptoe at all using only the damaged leg , so it's going to be a long job to get it sorted. The Physio reckoned it would take a year to be back to anywhere near normal. I also have to wrap a towel or similar around the underside of my foot and pull on either side for 5 seconds for 30 repetitions while lying down, four times a day. I can just about balance on the damaged leg now. I don't think any of the pains that I get are related to bones, just connective tissues that have to be trained to work again. I think I'll have to up my Cod-Liver-oil intake. Ligaments can take longer than bones to heal, so I've always been given to understand.

Hello RJimmer. I am pleased to hear your update. I've been wondering how you are going. You mentioned a 'marked improvement' 6 weeks ago after 2 weeks of Mobicosa. Do you feel as though it has made/is still making a significant difference?
On the subject of your doctor's anticipation that you'll be' stiff and swollen after a day's work forever more', here's some food for thought. We were given similar advice ... and about a month ago one of the specialists said he would definitely develop arthritis because they'd had to 'scrape away' the cartilage when repairing his broken bones. He also said it might become necessary to 'fuse' my husband's ankle because there is currently no ligament support.
They couldn't tell if the ligament is torn or just stretched, but the surgery notes didn't make mention of it being cut ... so they sent him for an MRI and a weight-bearing xray. (In other words, standing up with all weight on the broken ankle.)
The MRI was no use because the pics are all distorted because of the amount of metal in his leg. (Hmmm. I thought that would have been an obvious outcome to a specialist in that field, but we had to go through the process to prove it. lol.)
Anyway, so we're looking at the weight-bearing xray at the next appointment (different orthopaedic specialist from the team) and I asked if it was possible to see if there's any cartilage at all remaining. (I wondered if you had to have some there for the Mobicosa to build on.)
The doctor ran his finger over the image to show us the cartilage. I stare him the eyes and demanded, "Really?? Are you sure that's cartilage? Are you saying it absolutely has to be cartilage and it couldn't be anything else?"
"That's all cartilage," he insisted. "Otherwise the bones would be resting on each other. That gap is cartilage."
So, less than 4 months after beginning the Mobicosa we were told the cartilage is as it should be. If that's the case, then there's not much danger of arthritis. We're delighted with the outcome.
We still have to address the ligament issue so I'm hoping comfrey might help with that and I'm currently researching other natural options that might help. There doesn't seem to be much written about repairing ligaments. Apparently there is a surgical option that involves 'anchoring' some kind of artificial support to his ankle, but we're not in a hurry to go there. Let's see if we can fix it some other way first.
Meanwhile, my husband is back at work - on his feet all day and doing just fine. Yesterday he came home early complaining about an ache so I put another comfrey compress on. (And wrote a hub about it if you're interested. https://remedygrove.com/remedies/How-to-use-Comfre... )
It was only today that he mentioned he'd lost his grip while climbing up onto a tractor and fallen back with his full weight on his ankle. The ache was gone within an hour of the compress and he was back at work again today.
He wears two layers of support on his ankle to keep his leg above his ankle while waiting for the ligaments to heal, but the broken leg bone and ankle have repaired beautifully.

He marveled at how the surgeons had put it back together, seeing the original x-rays. Still rubbing in the Pernaton Gel and taking the Mobacosa capsules, 2 a day. I have found some stuff called Musselflex over hear that comes from the same source, but I'll finish the Mobacosa capsules first. I've got enough to last well into December.

I'm pleased to hear the mobicosa is working for you as well. Main difference between you and my husband is timing I think. He used mobicosa from day one. You had weeks of damage - so the repair will be a bigger challenge. Keep your foot up, toes above your nose. Lie down with your foot raised on pillows. Could be fluid causing 'swelling'. You sound happier. Must be feeling a bit relieved, eh? I am still on the road. Will check again for your updates. :)

14th day of the Mobicosa 'campaign' and today's X-rays show a marked improvement. I have now been told to put all my body weight on the leg whilst walking, still wearing the boot, for 2 weeks, then take the boot off. Not sure I am that confident!!! Now 10 weeks after operation. Report back to hospital in 6 weeks time.

I'm now into the 10th day of the Mobicosa 'campaign' and have had a lot more movement in the ankle for 2 days now. The swelling around the ankle started to go down at the same time but it is back again today. Was your hubby already taking the capsules well before his accident? I've been double-dosing for 10 days as advised on the container. Very little pain except for when I try to explore how much ankle movement I can manage. No pain at all when using the car clutch pedal!!!

The Mobicosa was delivered today. I have rubbed it in twice now. I was not expecting it to be as runny after you described putting a 'fist-sized pile' on your hubby's ankle. I've also started 'loading up' with the capsules. This week's X-rays were not very encouraging, in fact I thought we might have been looking at the shots that were taken 2 weeks before. No bone growth in evidence! I couldn't find any Comfrey, only Spinach. I've been getting Vitamin D out of a bottle rather than the Sun for fear of more skin cancers. The ankle is stiff but hardly any pain. I almost feel tempted to put on a shoe and drive the car. The foot and toes swell up sometimes if I walk to the supermarket(with crutches) to do some shopping(400 yards each way), but it goes down overnight. Here's hoping your magic gel works! Summer is almost over and I have a lot of work to finish before it gets wet. Both the wounds are well-healed and there was just a small scab left on one of them when the first lot of plaster was removed 3 weeks after the op.

I doubt they will want to thin my blood, as my blood pressure is fairly normal, probably low for my age, 110 over 72 this afternoon. By the timing of your responses, I guessed you were to the east of Perth. Both Perth and Sidney sound too hot for me. I'm having occasional freezing treatments for little skin cancers, hear in Weymouth and I have to wear a hat all the time outside. The ginger chap I went to school with, says he stays indoors most of the time in Sidney.

You should mention the mobicosa to your doctor, particularly if they suggest putting you on blood-thinning medication. Natural therapies need to be considered when taking medicines. Your condition sounds complicated but your doctor should be able to tell you if there's any potential conflicts.
Perth and Sydney are both beautiful cities with lots of sunshine - on opposite sides of the country. I'm living further south where it is cold and frosty at this time of year. :)

My boot looks exactly the same as your picture. I was kept in a few extra days because my blood oxygen was down. I don't know if that would be a factor in the slow healing or not. Breaks at the ends of bones are supposed to heal more quickly that breaks in the middle of them because of there is more blood flow at the ends. The CT scan didn't show any blood clots on the lung, but they thought my GP might refer me to a heart lung specialist once I'm mobile. I've been short of breath walking up steep hills lately, but could still do a 3 mile walk in under 50 minutes before the accident.

RJ, there's no change in the colour of your skin. The gel is not green. Your boot sounds different to the Aussie one. It would be impossible to cross the straps on this type. The straps feed straight across.
I'll be interested to hear how you go with your olive oil and honey. We used coconut oil to soften the cracked dry skin on his sole and foot that became problematic, but olive oil would be another choice. Honey certainly has healing qualities and a lot of people use it to kill germs. They are both good, natural products and I trust they'll help with your healing.
Yes, my husband is younger than you but I'm thinking for anyone over 50 any great bonus of 'youth' has faded. Hard to predict how different his recovery might have been had he been 66. Worth mentioning he had a bone density test done a couple of years ago and was told he had the bone density of a 30 year old, except for wear and tear in his back and hips. I suspect his bone strength has a lot to do with eating so many home-grown fruits and vegetables.
In the early weeks, he found it hard to imagine he'd ever be capable of standing and walking again. I encourage you to do the best you can with what you have available - and I'm hoping you become just as pleased and relieved with your improvements as my husband is today. :)

I had already ordered some gel and capsules before you replied. Does the gel leave the skin dyed a strange colour? I think this groandbait additive will leave the skin green. I'm stuck in the house, so I can't hunt round for things. Olive oil and honey sounds attractive. With the plaster on, I could work the clutch(left foot), but I'm not going to try it in the boot. The nurse crossed the foot straps when she applied the boot, but it caused some discomfort in my high instep so I don't cross them now. How old is your husband? He's probably younger than me(66) so might heal quicker.

RJ, it is about 10 weeks now. He doesn't drive yet because the strain of slamming on the brake could cause damage and he is determined not to do anything to risk his progress. He is concentrating on a speedy and full recovery. (We get a lot of kangaroos and wombats on the country roads where we live, so quick braking is very important here.)
To encourage you to look after yourself, I'll share a conversation I had with a man in town the other day. He reminded me how important it is to insist my husband restrict himself to doing his ankle exercises and only minimal walking because he'd been too impatient years ago to stay off his feet and he's suffering really badly from ongoing pain and restricted movement in his own ankle. He kept saying that if he had his time again he would take proper care of himself.
You can get Mobicosa in England. I have friends there who have bought and used it. I think they bought it online though, from a British company. I suggest you try to get both the gel and the capsules. I'm guessing you've read my hub about the capsules fixing my arthritis, and the one about the gel taking care of my husband's swelling. Of course I'm not a doctor, but it worked brilliantly for us - and lots of our friends over the years as well. :) I doubt you'll need your bracelet while you're using it.
My husband is taking the capsules morning and night plus applying gel not because he has swelling but because he is determined to do everything he can to speed up the process. If you still have swelling, bruising and pain, I'm guessing you'll experience quite a dramatic improvement quite quickly. (Just remember, it won't help you if you leave it in the bottle, lol.)
Please don't put the gel on your actual wound. We only use it on unbroken skin ... and then over the scar once it has properly healed.
For healing the wound itself, we used comfrey compresses (with home-grown organic comfrey) and aloe vera barbadensis, straight from the plant. If you can get an aloe vera plant, pick about one inch of nice fat leaf and slice it in half, then rub the juicy flesh straight on your wound. Kills germs, heals the wound, works a treat.
At our last visit, the doctor was telling us how nicely the bones are healing (courtesy of latest x-rays) but lamented that unfortunately it won't be possible to repair the cartilage so he will undoubtedly develop problems with arthritis.
I didn't bother telling him my arthritis story and how I now have healthy cartilage, but as soon as we left his room my husband was saying he really wants to have an MRI in about six months time so they can check out his healthy cartilage. :)

I've been taking photos progressively and will create another hub once he gets the all clear. It has been a really interesting journey.

Today, I have taken off the magnetic bracelets that I have been wearing for several years to ward off arthritis, thinking they may be holding backbone growth. Any thoughts on that?

Hi Rjimmer. It must have been awful waiting 4 days for your operation. As I explained in another hub, they operated on my husband the very next day because he had minimal swelling. Lucky I'd smothered his ankle with our 'magic cream'. lol.
They didn't use plaster at all after his op. Just a bandage and the boot. His healing is progressing nicely and the specialist said he's "ahead of the curve". He's already back to full weight bearing, thank goodness, and can walk without discomfort and with no limp.
Still eating lots of bone-friendly foods and doing all his exercises. Try including pumpkins in your diet and get hold of some comfrey if you can. I wrote a separate hub on the foods we've been concentrating on.

6 weeks after the operation to plate and screw the bottom of leg bones and ankle back together, I had the plaster finally removed yesterday and am now wearing a boot like the one you have shown. The x-rays showed the healing was a bit slow and I half-wish they had replastered it after taking out the clips and cleaning up the wounds on either side of the ankle. I could see at least 9 screws in the x-rays and they thought one could be removed as it might be hindering healing, but they rang today to say it would not be done, so I was able to eat something after all. I've been stuffing myself with Non-fat Yoghurt, milky porridge, sardines/pink salmon, kidney beans, green beans etc to try to speed things up. Before the operation, 4 days after the break, they told me it would be 8-12 weeks before I could put any weight on the leg. I think they may have been accurate with that. I remember when I broke the same left leg at 5 years old, I had olive oil rubbed into the leg, but that was only a greenstick fracture.

Very interesting! I always feel a twinge of pain when I see pictures like this! 6 days before we were getting married, my husband broke his tibia and fibula (spelling?) along with shattering his ankle. The x ray pictures were fascinating! The two bones were broke clear through! He had an external fixator on his leg for about a week before getting a second surgery. (yes, he was in a wheelchair for our wedding!). Now, he has about 18 screws and two different plates (I think). And the x-rays for them are quite interesting too. I'm tempted to put magnets on his legs for entertainment :) Thanks for writing about your experience with your hubby :)
