There has been much speculation over the years regarding the health benefits of drinking certain kinds of teas; some say that certain ancient tea leaves or herbal blends can have healing properties, or cause rapid weight loss, or produce some other ‘miracle’ cure for any kind of ailment.

The issue is, there is often little scientific evidence to support these claims, just as in the case of almost any drug or diet which claims to have ‘miracle benefits.’ However, while drinking teas may not be the sole answer to any variety of physical issues, there are many health benefits to drinking certain types of tea which the scientific and medical communities have found to be incontrovertible. Below are some of the many kinds of tea whose properties may help aid the body with a variety of health issues

Crash Course: Free Radicals

Free radicals are molecules with a number of electrons in the cell which are unmatched to the number of protons and neutrons, and usually formed when weak molecule bonds are broken in a particular way. These molecules are “very unstable and react quickly with other compounds, trying to capture the needed electron to gain stability.” These molecules can damage cells within the body while trying to balance themselves out, and may therefore accelerate the overall aging process. Antioxidants have been shown through scientific tests to counter the effects of free radicals by balancing out the electrons within the molecule, thus negating the need for it to take from other cells within the body, and slowing cell damage. White Tea

White tea is often the least-heavily processed kind of tea readily available on the market today. White tea leaves contain very high levels of anti-oxidants. The antioxidants in this tea, in particular, have been shown in many studies to fight off free radicals within the body.

White tea also contains high numbers of flavonoids, which are a particular form of antioxidant that has been shown through numerous scientific studies to be effective in fighting off potentially cancer-causing cells. Flavonoids have been shown to reduce the size of many of harmful cancer cells and even prevent new ones from forming.


This tea is generally considered to be a great way to boost your immune system for everyday issues as well. Green Tea naturally contains very high levels of a natural chemical found in plants, called EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate). Much like white tea, the EGCG in green tea is a powerful antioxidant which can help rid the body of and prevent the growth of harmful cells within the body.

Researchers have also been looking to the potential for EGCG to increase brain function. Black tea contains naturally occurring chemicals called ‘polysaccharides,’ which are carbohydrates that work to slow blood sugar absorption in the body.

This can greatly help those struggling with issues related to diabetes, and may even help prevent diabetes from developing. The same properties which aid in sugar absorption also could aid in improving cardiovascular health, and maintaining blood pressure.

Interesting facts about different types of teas.

We take green tea or black tea at times. Black coffee also is okay at other times. Milk is not good at many occasions as it causes gastric problems and mucus formation.

What a lovely hub. I have not tried many of these and now hope I get the chance to do so. I have been a coffee drinker most of my life, but have of recently, started drinking more tea: chamomile in particular. Seems my stomach likes tea more than coffee these days. Smiles.

I enjoy all varieties but the best of course is green tea in taste and for health. Indians however prepare tea in many different ways which sometimes includes the goodness of spices as well.

I love drinking tea and green tea is my favorite since I've discovered it. I never add sugar to it, only lemon juice to make it taste better since it is a bit bitter. It also helped me shade some weight so I trust this tea completely.

Kevin, I did that a few months ago and I've honestly felt so much better, since tea doesn't seem to make me as jittery and I don't feel as much of a 'crash' after, but it's all just personal preference. You could always alternate to see if you like it! I would never outright recommend a that coffee lover quit their favorite beverage...if someone had send that to me when I drank coffee everyday, there would have been some pretty dire consequences, haha.

Yes I like that these teas have many health benefits, but of course no simple beverage, as tasty or healthy as it may be, can actually cure disease (but wouldn't it be nice if the answer was wine? Haha). Medicine and treatment are also very important, which is why I tried to express repeatedly in this hub that these teas are not any 'miracle cure,' but they may help people to deal with, but not cure, certain health issues, like high blood pressure and weight loss. Nice informative hub. In fact, all kinds of teas have some or other health benefit. But some kinds of teas like chamomile tea, green tea have a definite edge over others kinds.

It was previously thought that black tea with milk has no health benefits but it is not so. They are also beneficial. In fact, mostly I drink black tea with milk.

Funny how I can drink tea all my life and not know the difference.

I always thought that a cup of tea was back if you didn't add milk otherwise it was white, cup of tea when milk was added.

Didn't even know you could buy white tea leaves.

I believe the standard types of tea you can order at restaurants and cafes is usually black tea, the kind which most commonly has milk and sugar added, but I'm not entirely certain. If you do try other types of tea please submit your feedback! I'd love to hear more.

I have discovered minty teas, like Sleepy time, are good for upset stomach, and helps with that horrible overstuffed feeling after a large meal! I've been meaning to try white tea!

Interesting, I only drink tea, my answer to the poll was white, not sure if white tea is ordinary tea leaves with milk add.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, as even though I'm a tea drinker, I have never tried any other types of tea.
