Lemon Essential Oil: Four Amazing Benefits

I have been using essential oils and aromatherapy to improve my health, immunity, and emotional well-being for years.

1. Improves Concentration and Energy

Lemon essential oil, like other oils in the citrus family, is great to diffuse when you need a little pick-me-up in the afternoon. Citrus oils are my go-to for keeping me energized and on task. Two great blends for concentration that I like to use are: 3 drops lemon with 2 drops rosemary essential oil, and 3 drops lemon with 2 drops peppermint essential oil. Rosemary and peppermint essential oils are also great for concentration and promoting energy. They also blend well with most citrus oils, including lemon.

You can also blend lemon with other citrus oils for a boost of energy, such as orange, grapefruit, lime, and bergamot. Citrus scents are a great way to lift your spirits and keep you energized throughout the day.

2. Can Reduce Nausea and Morning Sickness

Research has shown that smelling citrus scents is a natural way to help ease the unpleasant symptoms of morning sickness and queasiness. Diffusing citrus oils, like lemon, are an easy and convenient way to receive this benefit. It should be noted, that although it is safe to diffuse lemon essential oil during pregnancy, lemon essential oil (or any essential oil, for that matter) should not be ingested during pregnancy or when suffering from an upset stomach.

3. Great for Cleaning the Home

Lemon essential oil is great to add to homemade cleaning products and can be used throughout your home to clean. While I admittedly do not make my own cleaning products, I know several that use lemon essential oil because of its powerful cleaning abilities, natural disinfecting qualities, and pleasant scent. Mixing a few drops of lemon essential oil and equal parts water and vinegar in an 8oz glass spray bottle easily gives you a natural kitchen counter cleaner. You can also add additional citrus oils, like orange or grapefruit. While this is a great, natural alternative for those that want natural cleaner, or are bothered by harsh smelling, chemical fumes, I would use a disinfectant wipe after handling raw meat or other food that can cause illness if the surface is not cleaned and disinfected properly.

Another good use for lemon essential oil is that it is a great way to remove sticky residue. The oil is a great alternative to Goo-Be-Gone, just simply add a few drops of lemon essential oil to the sticky surface, and the stickiness will naturally be removed!

One final way to use lemon essential oil is to deodorize your home or car. Just how restaurants often serve a lemon slice with fish to help you get rid of the fishy smell that may be on your fingers after you eat, lemon can help deodorize your room or car after food has made the area smell not so pleasant. Diffusing lemon essential oil in your house, or putting a few drops of lemon essential oil on a cotton ball and rubbing it on your car vent, is a great way to naturally deodorize and get rid of unwanted odors.

4. Promotes Respiratory Health

One of my personal favorite benefits of lemon essential oil is that it is a great oil to use to promote respiratory health. Blending equal parts lavender, peppermint and lemon essential oil is a great way to help relieve respiratory distress caused by allergies. Since lemon essential oil also contains natural antibacterial and antiviral properties, when diffused, this oil helps kill germs that may be lurking in the air. This makes it a great oil to blend when illness strikes your household.
