Benefits of Carrots, Carrot Juice and Gajar Ka Murabba in Pregnancy and Health

Rajan is a botany and chemistry major. He has worked as a poultry breeder for 23 years, breeding layer and broiler parents.

Latin name: Daucus Carota.

Carrots originated in Afghanistan and Iran in a wild state. This carrot was bitter with a large woody core. Subsequent breeding over centuries gave rise to the carrot we see today.

Carrots are found in a variety of colours, yellow, orange, red, purple, black and white. The shape and size, too, vary considerably.
Carrots are consumed in different ways like eating it raw, boiled, cooked, steamed, as a juice, as a soup, as pickles etc.

In India, a dessert made of carrots, milk and sugar called 'Gajar Ka Halwa', is very popular.

Carrots can be eaten in all health conditions except where sugar is contraindicated as in diabetes. Drinking carrot juice is more beneficial than eating carrots.

Carrots come in a variety of colours but the best is the dark red, almost black coloured carrot.
It is difficult to eat a lot of raw carrots but drink carrot juice for full benefits.

Carrot is gas causing. Adding heated and ground caraway seeds, sugar and salt to carrot juice removes the bad effects and also improves the taste of the juice.

A glass of carrot juice compares to a full meal. Drink only 1 glass of carrot juice at one time.It is also called the poor man's apple as it has many health benefits.

What is The Best Way to Consume Carrots?

This question warrants some mention here. Normally, vegetables are more nutritionally beneficial when eaten raw. In the case of carrots, however, the converse is true. If carrots are eaten raw, there is a 3% availability of beta carotene to the body because the cell walls of the carrot are thick and cannot be broken down by the body's' juices easily. When the carrots are made into a pulp and cooked with a little oil, the availability of beta carotene increases to 39%.
Therefore cooked carrots are better than raw carrots, insofar as the beta carotene availability is concerned. However, if carrot juice is taken then this is the best option.


Consuming too many carrots and/or drinking too much carrot juice can cause yellowing of the skin.

Benefits of Carrots

Carrots have beta carotene which helps to prevent cancer and night blindness. After a long illness, carrot juice helps in faster recuperation. It gives strength and vitality.
Carrot juice causes gas in some persons. Adding heated and ground caraway seeds, sugar and salt to carrot juice removes this effect. It also improves the taste of the carrot juice.
1 glass of carrot juice compares to a full meal.

About Carrot Seeds

Carrot seeds yield a pale yellow to golden coloured oil with an earthy smell. This oil has skin tanning and skin toning properties. It benefits in skin problems like rashes, psoriasis, eczema etc.
Carrot seed oil increases flow of urine and is a kidney, liver and blood cleanser, eases premenstrual tension and is useful in arthritis and rheumatism.
This oil is used in some products like face wash, night skin lotion, anti-cellulite creams etc.

Carrot is one of the richest sources of beta carotene, the precursor of vitamin A. 1 carrot supplies more than the daily vitamin A requirement. It also has high levels of vitamins B, C, E and K. Carrot is a rich source of minerals like potassium, calcium, biotin, magnesium and iron as also fibre and antioxidants and phytochemicals which help in preventing various diseases.

Carrot is fat-free, saturated fat-free, cholesterol-free, and low in sodium.

Health Benefits of Carrots and Carrot Juice

Both carrot and carrot juice benefits the digestive system. They remove toxins from the body, prevent anaemia. regularly drinking carrot juice improves weight gain. Carrot juice benefits in tonsillitis, renal stones, the acidity of the blood, piles, ulcers, blood disorders and nervous disorders.
The benefits of carrots extend further to relieving insomnia, fatigue, male sexual weakness, asthma, tuberculosis, skin diseases, and diseases of the teeth and eyes.

Because of the amazing benefits of carrots that they are also called the poor man's apple.

Health Benefits of Carrots

To Increase Memory

Eat 7 almonds and drink 125 ml carrot juice mixed in 500 ml cow's milk, in the morning.

To Improve Vision

Drink a glass of carrot juice daily. It helps in night blindness and eye diseases.

To Increase Mother's Milk

The B Complex vitamins in carrots make the digestive system strong. Indigestion, gas, colitis, appendicitis and wounds are relieved by intake of carrot juice.

In Weak infants

Give 2 to 3 tsp carrot juice to weak infants. Giving this with milk hastens their development.

In Menstrual Pains And Problems

Boil 2 tsp carrot seeds and 1 tsp jaggery 200 ml of water and drink when hot, 2 times a day, in the morning and in the evening. It relieves delayed menses and menstrual pain.

In Pregnancy

Drink carrot juice every day. It improves the quality of milk and prevents septicemia. It also prevents calcium deficiency thereby dispensing away the need to take calcium tablets.

For Weight Gain

Drink carrot juice daily.

In Cancer

Regular use of carrot juice helps in all types of cancer but more so in blood cancer(leukaemia) and stomach cancer.

In Liver Diseases

Carrots should be eaten frequently. They give strength to the liver.

In Jaundice

Carrots are a natural remedy for jaundice. Carrot soup and carrot juice benefits in jaundice.

In Weak Heart

Drink carrot juice 2 times daily.

In Indigestion Due to Fatty Food

When Oil, Ghee and fried foods are eaten, indigestion can occur. This can be relieved by taking a mixture of 300 ml of carrot juice and 150 ml of spinach juice.

In Spleen enlargement

Eating carrot pickle reduces enlarged spleen.

In Swelling Of Large Intestine

A mixture of 180 ml carrot juice, 150 ml beetroot juice and 150 ml cucumber juice reduces the swelling.

For Worms

1. Take 125 ml carrot juice on empty stomach in the morning daily for 2 weeks to get rid of worms. Eating raw carrots is beneficial too. If one cannot digest carrots, they should drink carrot juice only.

2. Carrot Kanji (video below) when taken regularly also kills worms. Take 1 glass of this daily for at least 5 weeks.

In Skin Diseases

Carrot juice kills bacteria and clears the intestine. It purifies blood, helps in clearing boils and pimples, itching, and other blood-related problems. It clears acne and removes dryness of the skin due to the vitamin A in it.

In Chest Pain

Boil carrots and juice them. Add honey to this and drink. It removes pain.

In Burns

Grind raw carrots and apply on the burn area. It relieves burning and prevents pus formation.

For Wounds due to Injury

boil carrots and make a pulp. Apply this on the wounds. It heals wounds. This can be used on cancer wounds too. Drink carrot juice too.

In Bleeding

Carrot juice stops bleeding from the body.

In Rheumatism and Gout

Drinking a mixture of carrot juice, cucumber juice and beetroot juice, taken in equal quantities, heals faster than carrot juice taken alone.

In Swellings And Kidney Diseases

2 tsp carrot seeds to be boiled in 200 ml water. Drink this. It also increases the flow of urine.

In Urinary Bladder Stones

In urinary bladder stones, swelling of the bladder and for cleansing the kidneys drink carrot juice, cucumber juice and beetroot juice mixed together in equal quantities of 150 ml each. Carrot juice has the property of breaking the renal stones.
Consuming carrot juice alone too 3 to 4 times a day removes stones. Carrot juice clears the urine. Swallowing carrot seeds too removes stones.
Such are the multifarious benefits of carrots.

In Gall Bladder Stones

Take 250 ml each of Carrot juice and juice of salad leaves. Drink this to remove gall bladder stones.

In Adenoids and Tonsillitis

Carrot juice benefits in these problems.

Diseases of the Nose and Throat

Take carrot and spinach juice 250 ml each mixed together.

Actually, all other vegetables that we eat raw are more nutritious raw than cooked but in case of carrots the cell wall being very thick is not completely broken down in our intestines and hence the available b-carotene is much less than when cooked.B-carotene is fat soluble and hence oil is added to increase the b-carotene availability.
