Health Benefits Of Lauki or Bottle Gourd

Rajan is a botany and chemistry major. He has worked as a poultry breeder for 23 years, breeding layer and broiler parents.

Latin Name : Lagenaria siceraria

About Bottle Gourd

In India, it is known as Doodhi, Lauki or Ghia.

Other names for bottle gourd are; long melon, opo squash, calabash, bottle squash, white gourd etc.

The plant is a vine that can climb to over 12 feet. It produces edible fruits that are eaten as a vegetable. The fruit is available in a variety of shapes and sizes as can be seen in the photos alongside.

Bottle gourd should preferably be eaten with its skin.

In ancient times, however, this plant was grown for its fruits which were used for storing water. Bottle gourd is native to Africa.

Apart from being eaten, the fruit is used in various other ways - as a container for storing water, to making utensils of different types, making musical instruments especially percussion instruments, pipes used for smoking tobacco, etc.

Before cooking bottle gourd it has to be ensured that it is not bitter, as the bitter one contains Tetracyclic Triterpenoid compounds, the Cucurbitacins, which are not only bitter but toxic as well, and can be fatal in large doses especially when bottle gourd juice is consumed.

Nutrition Facts : Bottle Gourd

  1. Rich in fiber.
  2. Very low in fat and cholesterol free.
  3. Contains over 95% water.
  4. Rich in iron, Vitamin C and B complex.
  5. Low in sodium and high in potassium. Also contains good amounts of the minerals, calcium and phosphorus.

Some Health Benefits Of Bottle Gourd

  • It is cooling and rehydrates the body and relieves excessive thirst.
  • Improves the liver function, is useful in urinary problems and is a diuretic.
  • Relieves mental tension and improves sleep.
  • It is alkaline in nature, decreases acidity, is useful in correcting stomach disorders, relieves constipation, indigestion, diarrhoea and piles.
  • Flushes the toxins, removes kidney stones.
  • Reduces blood pressure and heart problems.
  • The high fibre content keeps one full and reduces hunger pangs.

Some Natural Remedies With Bottle Gourd

  • For Scorpion Bite

A paste of bottle gourd applied on the bitten spot as well as drinking its bottle gourd juice neutralizes the poison.

  • For Diarrhea

Grate bottle gourd, boil and strain it and then mix it in curd. Add salt to taste. Consuming this will relieve diarrhoea.

  • Kidney Pain

Heat small pieces of bottle gourd. Now take out its juice. Massage the area of pain with this juice. Also, applying the pulp prepared above relieves pain immediately.

  • Burning Of Soles Of The Feet

The pulp of bottle gourd rubbed on the soles relieves the heat and burning sensation.

  • Toothache

Take 75 gms bottle gourd, 20 gms garlic cloves. Grind both and add to 1 litre of water. Boil this mixture till water the quantity reduces by half. Strain and swish this water around in the mouth for relief.

  • Pulmonary Tuberculosis

Make a pulp of bottle gourd. Add powdered candy sugar and eat regularly for relief.

  • Piles

Make a paste of bottle gourd leaves and apply on the affected area for relief.

  • Jaundice

Roast a bottle gourd on low fire till it becomes soft. Take out its juice. Add some candy sugar and drink.
It relieves sluggish liver and benefits in jaundice.

  • Heart Disease

To 1 cup of bottle gourd juice add some black pepper powder and mint and drink.
Ensure beforehand the bottle gourd is not bitter before juicing it. This is very important.

  • Cholera

Drink 25 ml bottle gourd juice to which juice of 1/2 a lemon has been added.

  • High cholesterol

Oil of bottle gourd seeds reduces cholesterol, clears the arteries and gives strength to the heart. consume as per manufacturer's recommendations.

  • Oral Rehydration Therapy/Diarrhea

Bottle gourd juice if taken with a pinch of salt and sugar to taste acts as an oral rehydration solution.

  • Stomach Diseases Like Gas/Acidity/Ulcer/Indigestion etc

Drink bottle gourd juice daily.

  • Insomnia

Mix some sesame oil in bottle gourd juice and massage the soles of the feet to bring on sleep.

  • Gout

Tie pulp of bottle gourd on the affected joint for relief.

  • Nose Bleed

Boil bottle gourd and consume.

  • Facial Pigmentation/Freckles

Apply the pulp of bottle gourd on the face for some time.

  • Pimples

Apply bottle gourd juice mixed with lemon juice on the face.


Ensure the bottle gourd is not bitter by tasting the raw one before cooking or making juice.

The bitter bottle gourd is toxic and should not be consumed.

Hi Rajan,

I have never seen these for sale in a grocery store for consumption but have probably played with them as maracas. Looking at the musical instruments in the photos it is obvious that the bottle gourds can grow to impressive sizes. UUI votes and will definitely share.
