The Deadly Drug Bath Salts

Kacie was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, and has worked to "get back to normal" since. She wants to share years of research and experience.

There's a new drug in town

There is a relatively new, deadly drug making its appearance in the states and they call it Bath Salts. Lately, it has been getting quite a bit of media attention because of the extreme psychosis it can cause in it's users. It's called bath salts simply because it was initially a drug sold disguised in bath salt packaging, to give the appearance of legality. It can also come disguised as incense, potpourri, plant food, and stain remover, among a few other ordinary household products.

In many unfortunate cases, it has caused people to take their own lives. Individuals who would have otherwise never dreamed of hurting themselves have stabbed or shot themselves after taking in the chemicals in these seemingly harmless, legal bath salts. Those who have survived remain scarred for life, both physically and emotionally. The ingredients work by sending the brain into an "survival" mode, sometimes causing extreme aggression and even temporary super-human strength. Other drugs like PCP, LSD and Cocaine can cause the same type of reaction, but Bath Salts can put the user into this mode for several hours, or even day, at a time.

Parents, please heed this warning. Since bath salts are being sold legally, our kids don't realize how harmful and dangerous they are. Please read this blog through to the end. Watch all of the videos. From what I can tell, the product has been removed from Amazon, and although some gas stations and convenience stores are removing it from their shelves, there is still much to do because manufacturers are simply changing the packaging that the active ingredients come in. It is still being sold on the internet as legal. People have been led to believe that because it is sold in legal form, and even though it is marked "not for human consumption", that it is a safe, legal high. Unfortunately, in many cases, that couldn't be further from the truth.

What's it about?

The nightmare worsens because in even though most states have outlawed the drug, the manufacturers keep changing the packaging to appear as something else, and it can be purchased for as little as $20.00 for a small bag. Bath Salts come in appealing names like Ivory Snow, White Girl, White Rush, Purple Wave and Ivory Wave, as well as not so appealing names like White Girl Stain Remover, Scarface Bath Salts, Meow Meow, Pump it, Bump it and MCat. It may just be sold in a small bag marked "not for human consumption", or even disguised a fertilizer. Head down to your local head shop or gas station, and chances are you can get a bag. If not there, it is readily available on the internet. The drug is being described by many users as the closest thing they’ve come to a methamphetamine high, without actually using meth, and by others as a combination methamphetamine/cocaine high. It is manufactured with synthetic chemicals including Methylmethcathinone, Mephedrone or Methylenedioxypyrovalerone and each brand name carries its own specific blend. It is also important to note that since the drugs are manufactured in China and are not regulated, it is practically impossible to truly know how much of a dosage of the active ingredient a user is getting. Just because they took one dose before and didn't have a psychotic or physical reaction, the next dose they get, even though they may think it is the same, may contain more or less of the active ingredient.

It is NOT the typical bath salts that you use in your bathtub to soothe tired and achy muscles. It is important not to confuse the two or accuse anyone of being a drug addict because they decide to start taking bubble baths! It is the chemical ingredients that make the difference. As mentioned above, they aren't made of salt at all, and they can be disguised as many everyday products. It is also NOT the same thing as K2 or Spice. These are forms of synthetic marijuana that provide a high similar to marijuana. Currently, there are no home drug tests for bath salts.

What are the effects?

Users snort, smoke, inject, ingest and even insert the white powder into their rectum or vagina to obtain their high. Not only does it act as an extremely strong stimulant increasing the heart rate and causing chest pains, dizziness, panic attacks and nose bleeds, delusions, delirium and extreme aggression. it can act as a powerful hallucinogenic and cause extreme paranoia, as well. The entire buzz, including the hallucinations can last for up to three days.

What's being done to stop it?

It is believed that Bath Salts use began in Germany in 2007, but no one is truly sure of the origin, nor does it really matter. In the U.S., beginning in early October 2010, Louisiana had the first handful of emergency room visits and calls to the Poison Control Center. From there, it has spread through several states. Louisiana has since passed a law making the drug illegal, but its users are simply crossing the border to Mississippi and purchasing it there. In total, 38 states have passed some type of legislation banning the drug or its active ingredients. In September 2011, the DEA instituted a 12 month emergency ban on Bath Salts, however, because a simple slight tweak to the ingredients can result in a new drug compound, the laws are easy to get around.

"This imminent action by the DEA demonstrates that there is no tolerance for those who manufacture, distribute, or sell these drugs anywhere in the country, and that those who do will be shut down, arrested, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," DEA Administrator Michele M. Leonhart said in a statement on the DEA website. "DEA has made it clear we will not hesitate to use our emergency scheduling authority to control these dangerous chemicals that pose a significant and growing threat to our nation."

In February 2012, Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY), proposed a ban on the chemicals used in bath salts. Since 2010, thirty-three states have implemented measures to control the substance. Oversight is extremely difficult, though, because banning the product doesn't control the issue if the manufacturers simply keep changing the packaging.

"I am pleased the DEA has finally heeded our call to ban these drugs by making them illegal controlled substances. While this is a solid first step, we need to ensure that these drugs stay off the market for good," Schumer said. "I will push to permanently ban these drugs until the threat of this scourge is removed from our neighborhoods, our schools, and from store counters across the country."

The DEA emergency ban took effect in March 2012, and makes it illegal to possess or sell mephedrone, methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) and methylone -- all key ingredients for "bath salts" -- or any products which contain the chemicals for one year, while the DEA works with the Department of Health and Human Services to "further study whether these chemicals should be permanently controlled."

I had a relative die from this bath salts, he had done illegal drugs on and off most of his life, 9 months on bath salts and he is dead, this is some really scary stuff, it changed him, this stuff really fits the "this is your brain on drugs" commercial

Tonja Petrella (author) from Michigan on September 07, 2012:

I really wish I had an answer for you. If he is admitting there is a problem and he truly wants to stop, he has a good chance of being successful. The part I'm not sure about is what the reason was behind his decision to quit. Was it a horrible event, or did the people around him just start noticing there was something wrong? The reasons behind wanting to quit can sometimes make a huge difference whether someone is strong enough to do so. Even though he wants to do it on his own, he really needs a strong support system. If you can be that for him, you should, while at the same time making sure you are protected. Encouraging him to seek treatment if it doesn't seem to be going well isn't a bad idea, either. I truly wish you the best.

Question: my fiancé recently admitted to using this horrible horrible drug. However he is taking matters into his own hands to quit in order to save our relationship, I'm desperate for any advice on how to help him with this?? I don't want him to relapse and would like to know if theres anything I can do to help him? Please help.

Tonja Petrella (author) from Michigan on July 17, 2012:

It is a lot worse than some people want you to believe. There have been some horribly violent reactions of people on these synthetic drugs and these "back room chemists" are making them more and more potent everyday. It is a scary situation and it is so out of control it's going to take a miracle to get a handle on it. How can we treat these individuals whose entire personalities are being changed?

Free Willed on July 17, 2012:

All this stuff, bath salts, incense, these synthetic drugs..the best way to describe it all is pure, raw evil. I feel like that for many reasons. If you could take the devil, and put him in a bag..this is what you get. The stuff POSSESSES those who use it. It eats their souls, and destroys the lives of users and non-users alike on a daily basis.

My father is 58 years old. Raised 4 kids, and did so as a loving, highly involved dad. He devoted his life to being a dad and husband and he did it well. He is also a very addictive personality. He did all this, raising a family, being a good husband, having a successful career and always providing for us while being a marijuana addict and user. He had issues staying away from marijuana, but always took care of business and stayed sharp.

He was forced to give up smoking marijuana due to the prospect of having to leave his job 2 years ago and having to be drug tested in order to maintain employment. His company was laying off workers left and right so he knew his time was coming. He started using 'incense' (yeah right, this stuff does not make your room smell good, and the distributors AND OUR OWN GOVERNMENT KNOWS THAT AND THESE SUBSTANCES ARE USED BY PEOPLE TO GET HIGH). That is a whole other issue but back to my dad..

I noticed he didn't seem as sharp, his motor function slowing down. He seemed to lose interest in things he took more enjoyment in. One minute he would be prancing around whistling and humming, the next he would turn into Jack Nicholson from The Shining. I didn't realize what was up at the time, but I knew something wasn't right. Then I started to see.

I found the bags of so-called 'synthetic weed.' This stuff is NOTHING LIKE MARIJUANA IT IS MORE LIKE METHAMPHETAMINE. I mean that in several ways including the effects and the price. $40 for 1 gram of this shit that he would puff through in a few hours only to peal open another one of those little grimy bags and empty that out as well. He started off using lightly, then gradually increased to the point where he became a chain smoker. He went from trying to hide what he was doing, to just sitting around the family going to town on this stuff. Only I knew exactly how bad the stuff was. Everyone else refused to listen to me, including him. I am not perfect myself, nobody would want to take advice from me whether good or bad. I am disappointed in my family because he would be more likely to listen to them than me. But I was the only one who was not an ignorant coward to this situation..I made it clear to him he was screwing up. He was ashamed of it, and would just deny it all, and claim the drug was not responsible. That is a problem in itself. Good news now is I believe he is beginning to wake up to the damage this stuff is doing but now he feels as if he cannot stop .

He has had severe episodes of rage when he cannot obtain his fix. He is now depressed and a shadow of how he used to be. What disturbs me the most is that he doesn't seem to care if he lives and seems hell bent on sending himself to an early grave. His attitude on his own life sucks, he is letting himself go. His outlook is crap. He has gone through some stressful times over the past couple years and relies on this stuff to get him through the day and he chain smokes it. He would have been able to deal with this better had he stayed clean. He lightly used marijuana over the past decade. He has no interest in that, because this stuff has got his soul. If he had the option to use either or, he would go for the lab-created, soul snatching FILTH.

Now, I find most disturbing not my own father's deterioration though it is hard for me to watch, but rather the fact the government is playing a little game to rake in revenue, what they do best. They know damn well people aren't sprinkling these 'bath salts' in their bubble bath, or using 'incense' to make their room smell pretty. The government and the distributors of this filth are well aware of the hell this stuff is creating within our society yet it continues to fly off shelves all in the name of the root of all evil ..MONEY.

The war on drugs and the illegal drug game and crime that come along with it is no longer as profitable as it once was. All that generated revenue sending the junkies, criminals, and dealers off to prison they are all dollar signs in the eye of our government. But in order to bust these people, that costs money. The criminals and the government agencies both used our increasing technology to respectively evade the law or enforce the law..that costs police agencies money to bust these people.

Now, their logic is..why not join up with the dope dealers and distributors in a legal, yet immoral and unethical fashion. Lets put these 'research chemicals' (disturbing in itself to me they are referred to as 'research chemicals' what kind of research are they doing???) out, get the junkies and dealers away from the illegal stuff that is costing us money to bust them for, and get them on our own lab-created blends of satanic filth. We need to do something about this, we need a new way to rake in revenue, perhaps through tax dollars off this satanic filth..why not give them what they want and make it LEGAL and readily available? We make money and enslave them at the same time, just like the work 'force'..WINNING.

Hell breaks lose as this stuff hits the streets and people lose their souls and submit to the command of these lab-created synthetics. I also use the term lab very loosely..these drugs are created in uncontrolled dirty environments such as seedy motel rooms and trailer parks, laced with god (or should I say DEVIL) knows what other substances.

The ER visits, psychotic episodes, disintegrating families, lost souls, crime and filth come to the attention of the public. The government 'steps in' and bans these substances found in these batches of filth to 'reassure' the public they are fighting this epidemic only for the 'chemists' (I use that term loosely also) to continue to concoct new batches of deadly filth which bypass updated laws. THE GOVERNMENT IS AWARE OF THAT AND USE THE GRAY AREA IN THE LAWS THEY THEMSELVES CREATED TO KEEP THIS FILTH AVAILABLE FOR PEOPLE TO KILL THEMSELVES WITH.

They cover their ass with the phony 'not for human consumption' tag despite they know this stuff is created and sold for that very purpose. What other purpose do these chemicals serve, because they are far from real bath salts or the incense my ex-girlfriend used to make her room smell all pretty. ALL THIS IS A SCAM. For every substance that is banned from these synthetic drugs, there are various newer substances waiting to take their place so that all this filth can continue.

I find it insane that this stuff is legal. This is just a perfect example of how our government is nothing more than corrupt evil human filth. They are just as bad as the distributors and suppliers of this. It is time we all take a stand and flush this filth off the streets, and the corrupt scum out of office!! All of you bath salt and incense junkies out there who claim it is harmless, YOU ARE NOTHING MORE THAN SHEPPLE! Wake up! This stuff destroys your mind and central nervous system. Knowledge is power, and that is what the government wants to keep from us. It is time we wake up, both users and non users. Whether or not you realize it, the people who are supposed to preserve the way of life our founding fathers obtained for us are trying to take it away and keep you blind to their true devilish intent.

... on July 09, 2012:

You guys are hilarious! Take a look at what is legal and illegal! The single worst dts you can experience is alcohol and it is legal! This stuff isn't very addictive nor any more dangerous than any other substance. If you have underlying mental issues yes drugs will bring them out but they won't invent them! Does everyone remember the little girl in the sixties/ seventies that died from taking aspirin with a coca cola!? Quick let's ban those too!!!!! You people are clowns do some research and come up with your own opinions instead of regurgitating crap you saw on tv.

worldssweetest from Indiana on June 14, 2012:

I believe that the laws are just not doing enough, not sure what it is so they really are making up charges, is it illegal ? That depends on the state, and believe it or not the county you live in. Some states have given it to the communities county they live within to pick up the charges, and many of the small counties can do nothing at all if they do not have the staff, full jails, large court back ups, and every other excuse.

Once they stop or try to stop the bath salts or scar face it has beeb proven to ME, by the friends of the 2 out of 3 kids addicted to just find a better way to get off of the withdrawls of these bath salts. They turn to pills, and believe it or not will crush them as they did the bath salts until fine and soft then will snort the pills. Why snort pills ? Well, the best answer I can give to you about that is exactly the action. * SNORT*

it keeps them in a comfort zone if they snorted the salts, they feel they can snort anything. The other day, my son showed up here, the one I would not let around here due to his severe paranoia, anger, stealing, lying, lazy, no job, and paranoid seeing and hearing the ' CIA & FBI' watching him, anyway he came by the other day and asked if he could get a medicine from me, as I am disabled, I said " Um NO " !! He said , and boy oh boy these kids get closer to the edge of life without caring if their family grieves a death, because they won't die, just ask them!

Anyway, I do take morphine and he said just give me a morphine, I said no, he said, " Mom, come on I hurt from withdrawls, (ones he has supposedly been going through for months) I still said no. I will not help his addictions. He said I am not a pill popper I replied he is, or he would not arque with me on my answer. Then I said " Anyways you cannot take it remember you told me that pain meds make you throw up all day, and his reply almost knocked me over AND THAT'S NO JOKE..... he said, " I know but when I snort it; it won't make me sick, I said you cannot snort these they are gel now because of people snorting them and you know it doesn't do anything but protect you". He said " No I will put it in a frying pan and seer the pill it melts the gel then I can cut it and snort it. Well guess what, now all my medications are in hiding, and he don't have a key, but knowing they are turning a frying pan on high and when it is at its hottest then they drop the pill and pick it up right away cut and snort.." WTHell DO OUR CHILDREN REALLY SEE LIFE IS FOREVER, OR DO THEY JUST DON'T CARE THEY MAY BE ON THE NEWSPAPERS NEXT AND WE HAVE TO BURY OUR CHILDREN DUE TO THEM chasing their next high and how to get high faster and the bad thing, he don't work, but hes high, don't sell , but hes high, so its so much more than a drug addict its a matter of what it is we truly know how their getting their fix. I an not a dumb mom...

You poor thing, Andrea. Your family has been so much. I'm so sorry to hear it. Watching your kids go down a path like that has to be absolutely heart-breaking. That is why it is so important for people to get the word out. You are doing a good thing by letting people know. Even if you can only help one person, it is worth it.

Andrea on June 08, 2012:

They got into as one of them said it made him feel better and he always had insomnia, thus deciding he could use the salts (Bath salts, Scarface) to keep awake longer. After so long he said he hates sleeping and that it was not addicting or he could not go buy it. To start with is when they came out with the SPICE, this was used to smoke to get high as if a marijuana cigarette would. Then when Spice which also said on it " Not for Human Consumption" and was considered to be incense leaves. But it was to smoke and get high. Then after banned they decided to come out with bath salts and scarface and they turned more people into addicts. This was the beginning of buying the new stuff to get high or energy from at smoke shops and gas stations. My other one started it when offered a line of bath salt from her older brother, whom in turn got hooked IMMEDIATELY and literally the two of them sat and listened to music, drawing, and forgetting they were living humans. Literally, no matter the day or time they only moved if they used restroom or to snort. No food, not much fluids, and the only noise was the music. It was horrible and disgusting.

It is difficult to have to have one child whom is not allowed in the home until clean due to the paranoia, anger, and the ppl he brought around. The other one cannot and is afraid to see it, hear it, or follow information on it as it makes her crave again. I remember less than 5 yrs ago thinking " I did it, not one out of 3 kids are drug addicts or alcoholics," this is not true and I hate which you will not hear that word come out of my mouth much, but this bath salt is only a new gateway of speed, now that its illegal ppl out here are making it in their homes, or the users are now on meth and or heroin. I really hate that stuff !! it has hurt my family tremendously.

Tonja Petrella (author) from Michigan on June 07, 2012:

Scared--Anything that can take our kids from us is a terrifying thing. Knowing it is out there and so easily available is the first step, along with talking to and being open with your kids about the extreme dangers. Another very real issue is the prescription drug/heroin problem our society is currently emmeshed in. The CDC has now declared it an epidemic. You are a good mom for taking the time to gain knowledge. Thank you for stopping by and reading!

First, thank you virtual treasure for doing this. As a mom of 2, this new drug scares the life out of me. I feel a little desensitized as far as the news goes and don't believe a lot of what is reported. But seeing this, I feel a bit more informed. Unfortunately, kids are easily swindled into taking harmful, life shattering 'new designer drugs.' This drug has exploded in popularity for what reason, I don't know. N/A I truly appreciate your comment, maybe if more people come forward with what they have witnessed the kids will be less inclined to try it. I know a lot of teens that try to fit in, these are the ones I fear for.

worldssweetest from Indiana on June 01, 2012:

Your right about everything you wrote as for the ones who are still using, a child of my own said the same, not addicting, not illegal, not high, not bad for him but lost 60lbs. Guess what they lost friends, home, job, wife, and now going through the worse detox and not one that goes away in 5 days. These users coming off of this are taking up to 2-4mos to be clean. The effects remain, the paranoia continues, and the fear of seeing, hearing or reading about it is true for ones that are going thru detox. So wake up USERS BECAUSE YOU ARE IN SEVERE, REAL, AND ABSOLUTE DANGER EACH TIME YOU USE IT, AND THE DENIAL IS THE 1st SIGN OF YOUR ADDICTION. YOU DENY = YOU ARE AN ADDICT. These bath salts... during their legal hey day... presented themselves at the local convenience store with ease and most people tend to somewhat trust something that is being overtly sold at the store. But this... this stuff will hurt you. I know this. it will hurt you really bad and tear you apart within weeks. I believe it is 5x more dangerous and addictive than meth. its so addictive some may end up needing to go on safe prescription amphetamines like adderall or else they simply wont be able to stop but that's not always an option for those without medical history of ADHD. YOU DON'T WANT TO PLAY AROUND WITH THIS. a couple weeks of using it and you will be scarred for a very long time after you stop.

Kim Harris on August 07, 2011:

oh. and it's believed that some of the effects will be permanent, like with huffing.

Kim Harris on August 07, 2011:

Here's an excerpt from our local paper. "Bath salts are crystallized chemicals that are snorted, swallowed, smoked or mixed with drinks or food. The chemicals can trigger the same effects as cocaine, meth or ecstasy, causing hallucinations, paranoia, rapid heart rates, violent behavior and suicidal thoughts."

A lot of people are going to the ER with hallucinations, panic symptoms, suicidal thoughts, violence, paranoia. Some are taken by police and EMTs because of aggressive and bizarre behavior, attempts to jump out of windows and off bridges, etc. I would imagine some are admitted to medical instead of psychiatric because of increased heart rate...maybe heart attacks. I'm not sure about that though.

Tonja Petrella (author) from Michigan on August 07, 2011:

I'm sorry. They are labeled bath salts, but they are made with specific chemicals that users are using to get high. The users know what they are buying, though, and it is truly being sold as a drug. I guess I could have been more clear, but its kind of confusing! Hopefully the video helps!

Brenda Durham on August 07, 2011:

uh oh I tried to delete that comment, since the article says at the beginning that it's disguised as bath salts...

Sorry. Thanks for the informative hub!

Brenda Durham on August 07, 2011:

Are you saying that the bath salts one buys in a department store are being used to get high? Or is it just that the drug pushers are labeling bags of drugs AS "bath salts" in order to disguise the contents?

Hang on.....I guess I should watch the video.

Yes. Which is extremely scary. It sounds like a lot of heroin users have turned to it because of the cost and convenience of purchasing it. Can you elaborate on some of the psychiatric symptoms? Is it just when they are using, or the effects that happen after? I've not read anything published yet on the after effects, and I think that is an EXTREMELY important aspect of its use.

In Ohio, legislation was signed in July but won't go into effect until September. It's not just teens using this, but teens are at higher risk because they tend to use things that are cheap and easy to get. I'm glad Amazon has stopped, but did you see how many hubs have been written telling people how to make it?!

Tonja Petrella (author) from Michigan on August 07, 2011:

Thank you so much! I am very honored! I truly believe we do have to get the word out. Amazon has finally quit selling it, but they are still selling the other herbs. If our kids see it as being legal, there is such a higher chance of them trying it. I need to update which states have illegalized it.

Kim Harris on August 07, 2011:

thanks gail. this stuff is sold in convenient stores and gas stations; right next to synthetic marijuana. law enforcement is finally catching on. unfortunately, there are hubs on hubpages about how to make bath salts that probably should be removed.

Gail Sobotkin from South Carolina on August 07, 2011:

Came here on Kimh039's advice and am glad I did because I never heard of this. Thanks for the alert.

HubPages Hottest just re-tweeted my tweet. I hope you get lots of traffic!:)

Kim Harris on August 07, 2011:

I just shared this hub with all my followers and tweeted it and stumbled upon it. This is serious and the word needs to get out. I work with psychiatric admissions and we admit people every day with severe psychiatric symptoms from these bath salts. I can't imagine why anyone would do this, but they do, and it's so dangerous. I feel so bad for the man in the video who lost his son like that. I was going to write a hub on this, but you have already done one, and an excellent one. Thanks Virtual Treasures.

Thank you for your comment N/A. It is important that people see comments like yours that are unfortunately true. If you ever come back here, I would like to have the chance to interview you about it and get more information from someone who has experienced this nightmare.

this shit is crazy dont do it if you haven't try it. not worth the high. my friend is at home coming down off of a 4-5 day buge. look i can't even type. he is curled in a corner trying to come off the shit. it crazy. but it does help heroin addicts.

Daddy's Princess on May 05, 2011:

Don't you wonder who first came up with the bright idea of snorting something like this? Totally weird and freaky scary too.

kero on February 12, 2011:

people shouldn't be shooting it up or putting it upn their asses. if you snort it, it lasts for 3 hours and you just speed. you don't hallucinate. if you inject it, yeah you will.

Raylene Wall from Alberta, Canada on February 11, 2011:

just regular bath salts? WOW! That's crazy!

lmmartin from Alberta and Florida on February 11, 2011:

I also thought what could be suicidal about bath salts? Used them for years. Hmm. Apparently there is no end to the stupidity of the human race and our never-ending need for thrills and/or distraction. Lynda

Virtual Treasure, Wow! This is news to me as well. I actually thought this was going to be about an actual bath product... I pray others see this!

This is sad that someone feels so bad that they will do anything to supposedly feel good...This is dangerous! Thank you for sharing, Peace & Blessings!

sisterofdummy on February 10, 2011:

I agree. Neither do I.

Tonja Petrella (author) from Michigan on February 10, 2011:

I don't get how being wired for three days with hallucinations and suicidal thoughts could possibly be any fun!

sisterofdummy on February 10, 2011:

I heard about this "bath salt" issue on the news. I guess this is the latest in a long line of things that people smell, smoke, ingest, shoot, or somehow find a way to affect their brain. Sad.

RandomLife from Nashville TN on February 10, 2011:

Wow, never heard anything like this. Thanks for the hub.
