Nutritional Value of Barley

Humans were familiar with barley, a common food crop, over four thousand years ago. Barley grains have impeccable significance due to their unique chemical composition and nutritional value.

The following points help highlight the importance of barley grains for the human body:

  • Barley grains have almost 15% protein and high fiber content that are excellent nutrients for the body.
  • Beta-glucans in barley grains are responsible for cleansing the body of toxins and reducing sugar.
  • According to the content of vitamins and trace elements, barley can be safely called a storehouse of nature.

What Is Barley Coffee?

No wonder the basis of the diet of Roman gladiators were dishes and drinks from these grains. Moreover, the large proportion of the diet of epic Russian heroes consisted of barley. They used to cook Porridge from it, baked bread out of grains and prepared a variety of healthy drinks out of it.

Closer to our time, people have learned to brew a drink from toasted and ground barley grains. After Europeans got acquainted with coffee, it was often replaced by a drink made of barley. True, this happened not to preserve health, but because of the high cost of coffee beans and regular interruptions in their supply.

Scientists of our time assure that barley coffee not only saves money but also brings serious health benefits.

Therapeutic effect on the gastrointestinal tract

No doubt, barley grains, cereals and drinks have healing effects on the gut and digestive system:

  • Barley cereal is included in the treatment menu against many diseases, in particular: ulcers, gastritis, dyskinesia, dysbiosis and a dozen others.
  • Barley activates, cleanses and tones the epithelium of the gastrointestinal tract and has a choleretic effect.
  • It also improves the intestinal microflora.
  • Beta-glucans, which are rich in barley, are an excellent nutrient medium for development.

Prevention of diabetes and control of excess weight

Diabetes is becoming more common these days and what else is needed when we can prevent this chronic disease just by using barley.

  • The high fiber content in these grains slows down the absorption of carbohydrates, hence, the level of glucose in the blood remains stable (under the range that is good for the body and does not make sharp jumps).
  • As a result, the pancreas is not overloaded, and excess glucose is not deposited in adipose tissue.
  • Barley grains also contain useful bacterial compounds, without which the normal functioning of the digestive system is impossible.

Improvement of the cardiovascular system

Barley grains are beneficial for the health of the heart, blood vessels and cardiovascular system.

  • Barley in its composition has a lot of magnesium and potassium, which makes it very useful for improving the functioning of the heart muscle.
  • The same magnesium and potassium, supplemented by the influence of vitamins E and D, help normalize blood pressure.
  • The vitamin complex and a wide variety of trace elements help strengthen the walls of blood vessels and make them more elastic.

Prevention and treatment of inflammatory processes

Barley has anti-inflammatory and bactericidal properties that make it good for preventing and treating inflammatory processes in the body:

  • A drink prepared from barley grains acts as a good anti-inflammatory agent due to the chemical composition of barley grains which makes them bactericidal.
  • This property is used to treat colds and infectious diseases of the respiratory tract and even in the complex therapy of skin diseases.

Restorative Effect

Restorative effects of barley have been proven from various studies, research and surveys.

  • The high content of protein and carbohydrates is good at restoring strength.
