What is a Baby Heartbeat App?

Pregnancy and giving birth is an experience that can be categorized as life-changing. The miracle of childbirth comes with its beauty as well as certain challenging aspects. The pain and discomfort that a mother has to go through to bring life into this world are unexplainable. The relationship a mother has with her child is one that cannot be compared to any other human relationship. An entire individual’s mind, body, and soul are growing inside your womb and that is a bond that has no match. Even in the very early stages, a mother feels attached to their child. Instincts of maternity may kick in even before you are aware of your pregnancy.

The medicinal practices surrounding childbirth and pregnancy have drastically changed with the rise in technological and scientific advancements. Newer and newer machinery, drugs, medicines, and healthcare procedures have been approved of and are now in practice. Now, we no longer have the medieval mindset of the ancient civilizations so why then can’t we use technology to help us establish a bond with our child? You may be surprised to hear but now you can listen to your baby’s heartbeat with just an app on your smartphone!

Can you really hear a baby’s heartbeat with an app?

There are two kinds of apps when it comes to hearing your baby’s heartbeat. The first category does not require any additional purchases or accessories, while the second type may need an add-on device (not covered). The idea of the app is that you may be able to listen to your precious child’s heartbeat anywhere you are. Gynecologist and ultrasound visits might be frequent but may not be as frequent as you wish to interact with your baby.

Women who are expecting often find it soothing and serene to listen to the heartbeat of their baby. It helps to soothe the mothers and allow them to bond with their child. And it has been made as easy as playing Candy Crush with these new apps that are available on iOS as well as Android devices. Although these apps is not meant to give the same result that a professional can, they are fun to use and add another dimension to your communication with the fetus.

As most couples will only go alone to the doctor, grandparents, and siblings along with other family members may not get an opportunity to listen to the precious sound. With baby heartbeat apps, the sound can even be recorded! So, in case you wish to share this endearing experience with the child’s grandparents or siblings, etc. these apps are here for you.

Is it safe to listen to your baby’s heartbeat at home?

As a mother, one of the first instincts one feels is that of being protective. From the animal kingdom to the human species, parents feel a natural urge to keep their child safe. As a mother, you will want to choose what is best for your lovely little one. An app on the internet may seem sketchy or unreliable. If you are worried about the health and safety of your unborn child, that is completely normal and natural.

You are probably wondering whether this is a safe procedure to do at home. There is no harm in listening or recording your baby’s heartbeat through an app within the comforts of your home. A trick is to put your phone on airplane mode when you use the baby's heartbeat apps. Some mothers will avoid this entirely due to radiation from the phone which may not be good for the fetus. An airplane mode will take care of this issue.

My Obsession of Heartbeat Apps During Pregnancy

I had a hard time conceiving so when I found out I was pregnant (my second pregnancy), my approach towards my pregnancy was very different from the time I had my daughter. I felt blessed to be able to conceive and I had the time to explore new technology which was not so popular back when I had my daughter.

When I stumbled upon Heartbeat Apps in pregnancy forums, I downloaded every single one that I could find!

Cautious Note

I would say a heartbeat app is not suitable for some mummy-to-be. There is certainty caution from the medical community on such app so please take such gadgets with a pinch of salt and treat these apps as something entertaining (like beauty filters), less of a tool to use to seek a professional evaluation.

I enjoy dabbling in such alternatives - even DIY pregnancy kits so please don't judge!

I would say such apps are not suitable for:

  • Women with an existing anxiety issue
  • Women who are paranoid due to unpleasant experience in the previous pregnancy
  • First pregnancy unless you are really chill about it and know when to seek necessary medical help

I underlined necessary is because it is quite likely you might seek unnecessary medical help when anxiety kicks in and you start thinking excessively about whether there's an issue in your pregnancy. Of course, to be safe, it's best to seek medical help but sometimes such apps mess up your perception so it is better suited for someone who had undergone a pregnancy before to exercise better self-judgment.

5. Womb Beats (iOS only)

This app does not exactly do the work of hearing a baby's heartbeat but it can be helpful in recording and preserving the heartbeat when you go to your doctor. It enables you to add serene background music to the recording as well.

The app is only available for iOS devices and is free.

6. Baby Heartbeat Monitor (Android only)

We recommend that you remove your phone’s outer casing before using this app. It will help to get a better outcome. The recording duration for this app is ten seconds. If you wish to record more, there is a paid version.

Are the Heartbeat apps accurate?

Each one of these apps is meant to only be used for fun. These are by no means a hundred percent accurate. Do not use any of these apps as a replacement for an actual checkup. Keep your doctors up to date about your activity regarding the app. Although the baby's heartbeat app will give you some excitement and maybe accurate to some extent, a professional will always be recommended.

Reviews from Mum-To-Be

“So cool!

This is my third pregnancy. I was a little skeptical that this app would work. I’m 11 weeks 4 days today and I was able to find my baby’s heartbeat with very little trouble. I’ve had plenty of experience listening to baby heartbeats, so I knew exactly what I was looking for. First I found my heartbeat, then went and found the baby’s. They were very obviously different heart rates. It was so incredible to listen to my baby’s heartbeat!”

“Technology is Amazing!

I tried it and didn’t hear anything and put it away. According to my pregnancy tracker, I’m roughly 7 weeks along so I wasn’t discouraged since I knew it was a long shot. Woke up this morning and just decided to play with it again. I kept hearing a faint noise that sounded too rhythmic to be anything else. So after about 10 minutes of playing around and moving the phone, I heard it loud and clear. Sweet precious baby has a strong heartbeat and I was able to find it several times after that.”
