Are Twin Flames Toxic?

What Are Twin Flames?

Like so many people, I had a twin flame journey. Anybody who has had a twin flame journey will tell you how painful it is. After doing some research, I realized that twin flame relationships have a lot in common with narcissist abuse as well as anxious-advoidant relationships. First, let take a look at what a twin flame is.

Twin flames are two halves of one soul. Soul mates are separate souls that have a strong connection to each other. You have only one twin flame, but you can have multiple soul mates.

The concept of twin flames originated in Greek mythology. The original humans had four eyes, four legs, and four arms. The gods deemed the humans as a threat. Originally, the gods were going to destroy the humans. However, the gods realized that they needed the humans. So, the gods split all the humans in two, which weakened them.

The origin of soul mates is unclear. If you do a Google search, a lot of people mistake the origins of soul mates with the origins of twin flames. Whether if you have a twin flame or a soul mate, you have a strong connection to another person. What's interesting is that your twin flame or soul mate does not have to be a romantic partner. You twin flame or soul mate can be a friend, family member, co-worker, etc.

If you meet your twin flame, you will feel a connection to them very quickly. You will see a lot of yourself in your twin flame. You and your twin flame will have your differences, but they compliment each other. For example, you may rather watch anime dubbed in English, while your twin flame would rather watch anime with subtitles. Just like all relationships, your relationship with your twin flame will experience turbulence. You and your twin flame will also have a separation phase. Eventually, you two will reunite.

During the separation phase, you'll have the chaser and the runner. The chaser will do whatever it takes to hold on to their twin flame. In fact, the chaser may become obsessed with the runner. Eventually, the chaser gives up. Once the chaser stops thinking about the runner, the roles reverse. Overtime, the twin flames will reunite. However, they may separate again. The only way twin flames can reunite and stay together would be if they work on themselves and become perfect for each other. The sad news is that it could take multiple lifetimes.

Twin Flames and Narcissist Abuse

If you meet your twin flame, you will feel a connection to them very quickly. You will see a lot of yourself in your twin flame. Narcissists have a long-term pattern of exaggerated feelings of self-importance. They may have a constant need for admiration, fame, and power. Most narcissists don't believe that there is anything wrong with them, so they don't seek therapy. Some narcissists do seek therapy, but that can take them years to heal.

Narcissists present themselves as loving, caring, happy, and stable people in the public eye, but they abuse those closest to them. If you are an empath, have low self-esteem, or if you only see the good in people, the narcissist can lure you in with affection. Narcissists want people who will enable their unhealthy behavior. They want people to admire them. This what you call narcissist supply.

There are many similarities between twin flames and narcissistic abuse.

First, the relationship starts off great. However, there is turbulence in the relationship. It reaches the point where there's the running and the chaser. In the case of a narcissistic relationship, the narcissist is the runner and the victim is the chaser. When it comes to a narcissist and twin flames, the chaser eventually gives up and the roles reverse. Eventually, the two partners reunite.

There is one major difference between twin flames and a narcissistic relationship. During the separation period, both twin flames work on themselves. Narcissists do very little to nothing to work on themselves.

Anxious-Avoidant Relationships

The twin flame relationship has similarities between somebody with an anxious attachment style and with somebody with a fearful avoidant attachment style. The anxious attachment style and the fearful avoidant attachment style are two out of four attachment styles.

Anxious attachment is a type of insecure attachment style where people cling on to others. It's rooted in the fear of abandonment. Somebody who has a fearful avoidant attachment style has a desire to be in a relationship, but they are afraid to get too close to people. Sometimes, if a relationship becomes too intense, the fearful avoidant will push their partner away. It's common for somebody with an anxious attachment style to fall in love with somebody with fearful avoidant attachment style. A person with an anxious attachment style may chase the fearful avoidant. In a twin flame relationship, the roles will eventually reverse. When it comes to an anxious-avoidant relationship, the roles may not reserve. However, the one with the fearful avoidant attachment style may reach out to the one with the anxious attachment style over time.
