Do you know that in the US, appendicitis is the most common cause of acute abdominal pain for which you need surgery? It is a disease that is slightly more common among males than females and develops often among people in their teens and in their 20's.
What is Appendicitis?
First, let's know what appendicitis is all about. Appendicitis happens when your appendix becomes inflamed, likely due to a blockage. It can also be acute or chronic. The appendix is a small pouch attached to the intestine. It is located in your lower-right abdomen. When your appendix becomes blocked, bacteria can multiply inside it. This can lead to the formation of pus and swelling, which can cause painful pressure in your abdomen. Appendicitis can also block blood flow.An inflamed appendix may cause pain off and on. Or it may burst open (rupture), causing sudden, severe pain. A ruptured appendix can spread bacteria through the abdominal cavity. These bacteria trigger a serious, sometimes fatal infection called peritonis.
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) states that the most common symptom of appendicitis is abdominal pain that begins near the belly button. It will then progress lower and to the right.
Symptoms of Appendicitis
The most common signs and symptoms of appendicitis in adults and children are:
- Abdominal pain
- loss of appetite.
- A fever and abdominal swelling
A person may also experience a frequent and urgent need to urinate, although this is extremely uncommon. The site of the pain may also vary depending on your age and the position of your appendix. When you’re pregnant, the pain may seem to come from your upper abdomen because your appendix is higher during pregnancy.
Nutrition and Appendicitis
It has been discovered that nutrition has a basic effect on appendicitis through various foods taken in our nutritional intake.cases have revealed that seeds of vegetable and fruits can result in appendicitis. The seeds of different foods may cause blockage in the appendix, such as cumin, nut, oat , fig, grape, barley, oranges, cocoa, date and melon. This is due to some studies that seeds have natural toxins. Researchers say that healthy people can easily digest these seeds but not all, based on the fact that people with weak immune system cannot digest these seeds and results in the blockage of the appendix. Also fatty and spicy foods, spicy food can cause inflammation and painfully uncomfortable indigestion. Combined with another condition, such as a stomach infection, appendicitis can occur. Also foods that are not properly chewed and foods low in fiber(foods that contain high amount of fats and sugar) tend to cause appendicitis.
To solve this effect, these foods should be avoided in our daily nutritional intake and there are some foods that we should include in it: food items rich in protein, vitamin C, and fibre should be taken regularly; also, fresh fruits and vegetables should be included in our diet in a sufficient amount. Eating eggs can also be a good source of protein and zinc, which helps in appendicitis prevention.
