What is Anemia?

It is a condition in which the number of red blood cells in the blood is low. Thus a person who has been told they are anemic has a low blood count.

There are numerous causes as to why one develops anemia. It could arise as a result of :

  • Active bleeding, eg. heavy bleeding during a woman's menstrual cycle, a wound, gastrointestinal ulcers or cancers that ooze blood slowly, such as kidney and colon cancer.
  • Iron deficiency
  • Kidney disease
  • Pregnancy
  • Poor nutrition
  • Deficiency of vitamin B12 known as pernicious anemia
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • Thalassemia
  • Alcoholism
  • Bone marrow related anemia
  • Aplastic anemia
  • Hemolytic anemia

Symptoms of Anemia

When you have a low red blood cell count oxygen to the tissues in the body decreases causing anemia. The signs and symptoms and include:

  • Fatigue
  • Decreased energy
  • Weakness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Palpitations
  • Looking pale

Severe anemia produces symptoms of:

  • Chest pain, angina or heart attack
  • Dizziness
  • Rapid heart rate and
  • Fainting


Treating Anemia with Beetroot Juice

Beet juices are considered as the most valuable cleanser and essential home remedy for anemia, because of its high iron content that regenerates and reactivates the red blood cells, supplying fresh oxygen to the body and increasing the blood count generally.

A valuable source of iron can be found in beets and is an excellent choice to reverse anemia (that is a result of iron depeletion). Treating anemia also needs to have enough vitamin B12 which can be found mainly in animal food and some sea algae. This has been proven in a research center in Germany which found that drinking 2 to 3 ounces of beet juice, two or three times daily could be beneficial for treating anemia.

Women in particular have benefited from drinking a combination of carrot and beet juice daily. It is helpful for menstrual disturbances as well as menopause symptoms, and found to be more helpful than drugs or synthetic hormones.

A combination of carrot and beet juice produces phosphorus, sulphar, potassium and other alkaline elements, and with the high vitamin A content, is an iron rich food and possibly the best natural builder of blood cells.

Warning: Do not drink beet juice alone in great quantities as it may cause a cleansing reaction that can make you feel dizzy or nauseated. Use only 2oz beet mixed with a base juice, such as carrot.

Medical Treatment

Medical treatment of anemia varies depending upon the cause and how severe the anemia is.

If the anemia is mild and is related to low iron levels, then a course of iron supplements may be given. However, if it is related to a sudden loss of blood from an injury, kidney or colon tumor, or a rapidly bleeding stomach ulcer, a blood transfusion may be required with further treatment to control the bleeding and stop any more blood loss.

Iron Rich Foods

To build up your blood count if you are suffering from anemia you should consume a diet of iron rich foods. There are an array of foods that have a high iron content and below is a brief description of 4 main foods groups that supply sufficient iron to alleviate your anemic condition.

Iron Rich Foods: Meats

All meat is rich in iron but red meat has a particularly high iron content. Anyone who consumes red meat on a regular basis does not usually have problems with iron deficiency. However, as is commonly known, red meat although high in iron, also contains saturated fat, and is linked to an increase in cancer and heart disease. Therefore it is recommended that if you need to eat red meat to help build your iron reserves, you should eat small amounts about 2-3 times per week, and always choose lean cuts of red meat.

Iron Rich Foods: Pulses/Beans

Beans are also rich in iron. But you should be aware that they do contain iron inhibitors, so you should soak them in water either overnight or for at least 4 hours before cooking. Although most beans now come canned or already cooked, saving you preparation time.

Iron Rich Foods: Grains

For vegatarians and vegans grains are an essential source of iron. Wholegrains are the best type to consume. Try:

  • Rolled Oats
  • Oat Bran
  • Wild rice
  • Quinoa
  • Millet
  • Cornmeal
  • Barley
  • Bulgar Wheat
  • Wholegrain basmati rice

Iron Rich Foods: Fruits & Vegetables

In isolation fruit and veg are a poor source of iron, but because they contain vitamin C they assist in the absorption of iron from iron rich foods. Therefore it is important that fruits and vegetables be consumed with iron rich foods. So meat and two veg will give you a good dose of iron, as will a fruit salad topped with yogurt, nuts and seeds.


Beet Juice Recipes

It is important that beet juices are consumed raw because the powerful betalain it contains reduces significantly when cooked, and oxalic acid crystals may form calcium stones when heated.

It is also better to combine beet juice with a base juice such as carrot. The addition of the flesh of a coconut, cucumber or celery juice also makes a delightful drink.

You can juice or blend ingredients. Blending creates a smoothie texture and provides more fiber. Simply put the chopped ingredients into a blender rather than a juicer and add a little water to blend.

The recipes below make one pint (16oz) of juice which can be drunk throughout the day.

1. Beet & Carrot Juice


  • 12oz Carrots
  • 4oz Beetroot
  • 2 sweet apples (Optional)


  • Wash and brush the vegetables using cold water and a stiff vegetable brush.
  • Remove the carrot tops
  • Use beetroot tops
  • Slice up the vegetables to fit into your juicer
  • Juice, chill and serve

NB: Add 2 apples to make a sweeter drink

2. Beet, Carrot and Coconut Juice


  • 3oz beetroot juice (use one small beetroot. The are sweeter)
  • 11oz carrot juice
  • 2oz coconut flesh


  • Wash and brush the vegetables using cold water and a stiff vegetable brush.
  • Remove the carrot and beetroot tops
  • Break the coconut and scrape out the meat
  • Slice up the vegetables and coconut to fit into your juicer
  • Juice, chill and serve

3. Beetroot, Carrot & Cucumber Juice


  • 3oz Beet
  • 10oz Carrot
  • 3oz Cucumber


  • Wash and brush the vegetables using cold water and a stiff vegetable brush.
  • Remove the carrot tops
  • Use beetroot tops
  • Remove cucumber skin if it is waxed
  • Slice up the vegetables to fit into your juicer
  • Juice, chill and serve

4. Beet, Carrot & Pineapple Juice


  • 4oz beetroot
  • 5oz pineapple
  • 7oz Carrot


  • Wash and brush the vegetables using cold water and a stiff vegetable brush.
  • Remove the carrot tops
  • Use beetroot tops
  • Remove cucumber skin if it is waxed
  • Remove pineapple skin
  • Slice up the vegetables and pineapple to fit into your juicer/blender
  • Juice, chill and serve

You're most welcome joy maxs. Beetroot and carrot juice is a more natural method of buidling your iron reserves than iron supplements, plus you do not get the negative side effects iron supplements give. Continue daily use of the juice combination and you should soon feel energized.

Thanks hotwebideas. The beetroot juice will help with your anemia and combined with carrot juice you will be getting lots of essential vitamins. Make sure that you drink lots of water and eat green vegetables whilst taking iron supplements as they have some unpleasant side effects.

This is really interesting. My elderly father has anaemia because of medication taken for cancer, and has been told that taking iron tablets won’t help, but he is to eat a good diet.
