Treatment Options for Anxiety Disorders

Have you been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder? If so, it’s critical that you make an effort to see treatment. After all, treatment is the first step on the journey to recovery. Some of the most common anxiety disorders include: PTSD, OCD, agoraphobia, and panic disorder.

When you speak with your physician regarding these conditions, he/she is most likely to recommend certain therapies. Some of these therapies include talk therapy (where you work with a therapist via cognitive-behavioral methods to overcome the disorder), medication, and several others.

Some of the most common supplements used as treatment options for anxiety disorders include valerian root, kava, chamomile, passion fruit, glycine, passionflower, St. John’s wort, magnesium, and hops.

If your physician recommends medication to treat your anxiety disorder, speak with him/her about taking supplements instead. This way, you can be instructed in the proper dosage and use.


If your symptoms are mild, there are a few changes you can make to your lifestyle that might help. First, start by making changes to your diet. This means that you need to make sure that you’re getting the proper nutrients to keep your body healthy and active. Also, you’ll want to decrease your caffeine and sugar consumption.

In addition to making some adjustments to your diet, you’ll want to make sure that you’re getting adequate exercise and sleep. This will make it easier to manage stress when it comes your way. If you believe that you’re experiencing symptoms of an anxiety disorder, start by implementing some stress management skills.

There are many people who believe alcohol can help combat anxiety. In many cases, individuals with anxiety disorder are over-stimulated and alcohol may help them calm down. However, alcohol can also lead to intoxication- and can ultimately lead to other issues. After all, it’s a depressant- and anxiety is often found in conjunction with depression. Therefore, unless your physician recommends that you use alcohol as a way to relax, it’s probably not a great option.

Alternative Treatment Options for Anxiety Disorders

Other treatment options for anxiety disorders include hypnosis, meditation, VR use, and acupuncture. These alternative treatment options have proven to be beneficial for some patients. However, you must also be aware that some people have not achieved relief of their anxiety symptoms with alternative treatments.


If you have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, you’ll want to speak with your physician regarding treatment options for anxiety disorders. He/she can guide you through the various options and help you determine what will work best for you.

One thing to keep in mind is that this isn’t going to go away overnight- it’s going to take some time. Also, treatment of anxiety disorders is not a one-and-done kind of thing. This is something that is going to require monitoring and even when you feel “okay”, you must continue treatment.
