Mental health is important in every aspect of our life. Most of the people think health is only related to physical well-being. When to tell an individual is healthy? If both the mental and physical state are in good condition then the individual is said to be healthy.

Mental health plays a very important role in our life.

What is mental health?

Mental health includes the emotional, psychological and social well-being of an individual. Mental health depends on our way of thinking and the way we handle our problems.

If mental illness left untreated it may lead to complex problems like

  1. Anxiety disorder (symptoms includes strong feeling of anxiety, fear or worry)
  2. Personality disorder (their behavior or way of thinking or feeling differ from the expectations of the society)
  3. Mood disorder. It includes depression (it causes mood swings, restless sleep, early wakening) and bipolar disorder (it causes a series of mood swing from low depressed state to maniac high)
  4. Psychotic disorder (symptoms includes abnormal thinking and perception)
  5. Schizophrenia (a chronic brain disorder)
  6. Eating disorder (abnormal eating behavior)
  7. Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental health condition that's triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it.

Signs of mental illness

  • Excessive paranoia (Paranoia is the feeling that you're being threatened in some way, such as people watching you or acting against you, even though there's no proof that it's true) or worry or anxiety.
  • Long lasting sadness (losing your loved ones etc)
  • Extreme changes in mood (People may have sudden changes in mood if they are: experiencing a significant life change, such as moving home or changing job. feeling stressed or overwhelmed. not getting enough sleep.)
  • Social withdrawal (isolating from everything or everyone and feeling of loneliness)
  • Dramatic changes in the eating or sleeping pattern (sometimes this may happen due to work stress or due to problems in relationship)

What is a normal mental health?

Normal mental health is a state of well being of an individual in which he/she realizes his/her own strength to cope up with the stresses a lead a happy life.

Tips to improve mental health

  • Talk about your feelings to someone you trust.
  • Be active.
  • Don’t drink alcohol too much. Have a limit.
  • Feel free to ask help.
  • Write diary. (Start writing a diary. It helps to relieve the stress.)
  • It’s okay to take break. Recharge yourself.
  • Do things that you love.

What can trigger mental illness?

  • Unemployment. Yes. Unemployment seriously affects one’s mental health and cause depression and it also decreases their energy and make them mentally tired.
  • Long term stress. Stress cause sleep problems and eating disorder. Prolonged stress can also affect our physical health.
  • Social disadvantages like poverty and debt. It has a negative effect on the mental health. Lack of income may affect our daily life and push us to depression.
  • Social isolation. It leads to loneliness. We cannot share our feelings and emotions with others and in result we keep our feelings and emotions piled up within our self and it cause severe mental problems.
  • Alcohol and drug abuse. Alcohol is a depressant which slows down the body mechanism by binding with the neurotransmitter receptors. If taken in high amount can cause depression and anxiety.
  • Unhealthy habits like Not Drinking Enough Water, Eating Late at Night, Smoking, Not exercising, etc
  • Having negative thoughts about things happening to you.
  • Stressful events like death of our beloved ones, divorce, problems in relationship, loosing job, physical injuries, etc
  • serious adverse childhood experiences often called childhood trauma. Childhood trauma also results in feeling isolated, and being unable to relate to others. Adults who experience childhood trauma were more likely to struggle controlling emotions, and had elevated level of anxiety, depression, and anger in them.

What is a good mental health?

  • Ability to learn different things. Ability to express a wide range of positive and negative emotions.
  • Ability to manage stress and handle problems without depression, etc
