Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your skin pores are clogged with oil, hair and bacteria. Due to skin blockage, you can experience different types of acne such as blackheads, whiteheads, nodules, and other types to be discussed later in this article. Unfortunately, it is the most type of skin condition that affects people especially teenagers . If you are affected or have been affected at one time, just know you are not the only one since it affects people at one point in their lives.

Acne can occur in different forms and it's good to know which one is affecting you so that you can get the correct treatment for it. These types are:

  1. Whiteheads are bumps that are hidden by oil and dead skin
  2. Blackheads are bumps that are open on the skin and filled with a lot of oil and dead skin. A blackhead head appears to be like dirt that has been deposited on the skin but it’s the bacteria and oil present in the pore that turns to brown when they come into contact with air.

These include those that can cause scarring

  • Papules are small red pumps that are inflamed
  • Pustules are pimples that have pus and resemble whiteheads surrounded by red rings .pustules can cause scarring if disturbed.
  • Nodules are pimples that occur deep into your skin and are large and very painful when they occur.
  • Cysts are pimples that contain pus and can cause scars on your face.
  • Fungal acne develops when an excessive amount of yeast grows in your hair follicles. They might become itchy and inflamed.

Causes of Acne

Acne is a hormonal condition that is brought by the production of androgen hormones which are usually at their peak levels during the adolescent stage and young adult years. When these hormones become sensitive and conjoin with bacteria on the skin with fatty acids in the sebaceous glands, it can result to the development of acne.

Some things may cause acne or make acne become worse:

  • Popping your pimples or acne-This can make your acne worse or increase the chances of more breakouts
  • Use of oily or greasy skin care products -They increase the chances of breakouts due to clogging pores.
  • Not managing stress- stress cannot cause acne but makes acne worse if you already have it.
  • Hormonal changes especially during the adolescent stage(androgens)
  • Use of some medications especially those that contain corticosteroids, lithium, or testosterone.
  • Genetics- if your family has a history of acne it can be the cause why you have them.
  • Consuming certain foods-research shows that eating certain foods can make your acne worse. Foods with a high glycemic index such as cakes, fried foods, and some milk products can worsen your skin conditions.

Skin complications

When you are attacked by acne, your skin may experience some changes maybe due to the medications taken for treatment or maybe due to the consistent occurrence of acne. The complications may be:

  • Acne scars that are left after the cane have cleared and may remain for a long period of time before they fade away completely.
  • Changes in skin color are either darker or even lighter than before acne attacked you. When you have acne, you may experience:

  • Hyperpigmentation includes patches that are dark and even redness
  • Skin swelling and inflammation
  • Painful bumps on the face even without touch
  • Skin irritation especially when you use unfriendly methods of clearing your acne

How to prevent and manage acne

Acne is difficult to manage and control but there are ways you can use to prevent it from occurring or becoming worse. This includes:

  • Use home remedies such as aloe Vera, tea tree oil, and honey.
  • Avoid popping your pimples
  • Avoid stress at all costs
  • Wash your face two to three times a day and after an exercise
  • Avoid facing touching
  • Drink plenty of water to keep you hydrated
  • Avoid oily skin care products(use non-comedogenic products)
  • Eat healthy foods e.g., fresh vegetables and fruits
  • Use topical retinoids

Your health should be your priority. When skin conditions such as acne and others occur, it is vital to seek medical assistance before they become severe. Skin conditions can absolutely make you develop self-esteem issues lowering your confidence and hence causing psychological torture. Remember prevention is better than cure so take note!
