A Memoir on Stress Management

Few years back

When keeping temper was getting harder and harder for me.

I was feeling an obvious drop in my libido and would remain in a strange state of torpor most of the time.

Digestive problems would not get better even with treatment.

The most disturbing part of that epoch was the abnormal secretion of oil(sebum) at some places of my body like nose and pate(the top of scalp), that might have caused the itchy scalp and thinness of my hair.

Although, I had no history of mineral deficiency, anaemia, drug or alcohol abuse but, the fatigue, aches, mode swing, emptiness would worry me and everyone associated to me.

Who knows, a friend physician would come across, and we would have such a fruitful discussion at the street’s corner café about melancholic conditions that had been bothering me for quite some time.

Listen dear,

It may not necessarily be symptoms of stress or hormonal imbalance, but one can not rule out the possibility.

We all need to understand depression, and above all, it is incumbent on all of us to understand the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle that can keep the crippling stress at bay.

It is an ailment of psyche, related to concerns, worries, fears that deprive an individual of joy, and leave him sullen and pessimistic for an extended period of time. Time is the factor that we need to understand here.

Types of Stress.

  1. Positive Stress, Eustress

  2. Negative stress, Distress

Scroll to Continue

It is the positive stress, when one has every right to be in grief as a result of for example loosing something or someone very valuable and important.

Impact of positive stress, Eustress on Immunity[body defence system]

Eustress is good for health because it improves your immune system. Sorrow stimulates adrenal glands and in response it releases stress controlling hormones, Adrenaline, Cortisol and Norepinephrine. These hormones surge your energy and give the right amount of energy you're required to cope with the situation.

This is the negative form of stress, the culprit that strains the weaker minds. When you harbour stress a little longer and struggle to cope with it, this is distress.

Impact of negative stress, Distress on Immunity

There is an inherent connection between your body’s stress levels and immune system. When your body is in ‘flight or fight mode’ or in other words in stress a little longer than expected in such a situation your body constantly release stress hormones to fix things. This excess supply of hormones can damage immune cells known as lymphocytes. The fewer number of lymphocytes (immune cells) means your body is more prone to contracting acute illness and above all your body will take longer to heal wounds and illness. The hormonal imbalance affects your libido[men] and menses cycle[women], and immune cell imbalance, makes you prone to infections like flu and tenesmus.

I am making it simple and don’t go towards some serious risks associated with acute stress like migraine, and at worst case it might lead you towards the bipolar disorder.

It was crystal clear after the discussion we had that it was distress, the negative stress, that was bothering me.

Then we discussed some best natural ways of stress management.

The doctor prescribed that changing lifestyle is the only non-medicinal way to get rid of depression.

Bad cholesterol, low density lipoprotein(LDL), accumulates when we eat much, do little physical activities and not expose to sun at all.

Thirty minutes of walk or twenty minutes workout daily can help you stimulate enzymes that move LDL from the blood vessels walls to lever, where it is converted into bile or secreted out.

As a result of quality physical activity or other healthy social indulgence, our body secretes endorphin(morphine produced in our body) which lift our mood and courage that we require in a given situation. Endorphins keep negativity away and keep you fresh and happy

To get the chemical balance back and fix distress, you need to help yourself. Workout alone might not work. One need strong psyche to fight back. Exercising meditation and self-control can help to do away with self-indulgence, although it is very difficult to be abstemious, but not for the people who are open to learning and conscious of life and wellness.

If it is too late, it will be just crying over spelt milk. On the other hand, decreasing level of physical activity and increasing level of body weight can cause other complications like diabetes.

Since then, I

  • Walk for 30 minutes daily
  • Monitor my vitamin-D level earnestly
  • Do sun-bath as per the instructions of my physician
  • Work 40 hours a week
  • Avoid socializing during working hour
  • On weekends and holidays, I spend quality time with my family members, relatives and friends
  • Rise and retire early
  • Avoid inorganic food and love to eat seasonal fruits, citrus in the deep winter, mangoes in the hot summer
  • Do meditation regularly

The moral of the ordeal is that there must be some valid reasons behind every feeling of happiness or sadness. Let your body be wise enough and secret corrective hormones whenever they are needed. The wisdom is that the feeling of genuine happiness if stays more than reasonable time it becomes toxic and, same is the case with stress which should not stay too long.

Keep in mind that the symptoms may be non-specific, and having them doesn’t necessarily mean that you are suffering from depression or hormonal imbalance.
