Recently, I have been experiencing feelings that are making me feel lonely. My heart feels heavy, and I'm carrying around this unwanted sadness daily. This world has turned over backwards since I was a child, and people can be disappointing. For personal reasons and because of the way most people think about what is "right" or "acceptable" in today's society, I've never felt more alone. Social media rules the world, people are judged for everything, and some people can't even rely on their own family for love and support. As the Dali Lama has stated, people need companionship. However, happiness comes from within, and that is something I have struggled with for most of my life.
How I Deal with Dark Feelings
Sometimes, there's nothing I can do but have a good cry when my heart gets the best of me. Other days, I'll try to let go of those sad feelings by taking a walk outside in the sunshine or writing a poem to let out my agony. Both are extremely helpful. My favorite way of dealing with depression is reading an amazing book. It helps me to travel to new places and feel new emotions. Keeping a journal is also helpful. Jotting down inspirational quotes can help me stay positive, and even writing an angry letter then ripping it up and throwing it away can release negative feelings, even in only in a small way. I don't have many people to talk to, so writing this article is also a therapeutic way to release any dark feelings. My goal is not to let darkness win, so I do whatever I can to release those feelings that will be a positive experience for myself and immediate family. The main concept I've learned is you can't rely on anyone but yourself and God, and believing someone else will lead you to happiness will only lead me to heartache. In the end, we all do what is best for ourselves.
The people, our generation, this repetitive life
The racism, the violence, all comes out in strife
We pray for our nations and let out the cries
We pester our neighbors until someone dies
We use social media to stalk and to gloat
And get offended when someone tells a joke
People follow what they think is God's plan
Yet turn away when we should offer a helping hand
We're ignorant, blind, and stand apart
Yet the world thinks mankind is absurdly smart
Lacking common sense and embracing the books
Too focused on how we all should look If we, the people, can stand hand in hand
Maybe we have a chance of becoming a better man

Going Mad From Loneliness
Being in constant solitude has caused me to overthink a lot of situations. I suppose it is normal for people to go a bit mad along the way. It seems to be a common trait with classic poets, like Edgar Allen Poe. Perhaps that is why I admire him so much. He took his feelings and poured them out into his poetry. My loneliness has made me bitter, and my desire to please people has faded. The only people I truly care to please are my immediate family. They are the constant reassurance in my life, and I never want to loose that.

Thank you for all the thoughtful comments. It means a lot to connect with other writers who can express themselves on topics they are passionate about. I'm looking forward to reading each of your articles.

Everything we do in life is by choice. So, if one is alone, it is their choice and your hub is informative and helpful about a lonely life.

Nicely expressed and thoughtful poem. Creative writing helps you to express yourself and is a kind of self therapy, and so is reading. Add to the list, gardening, photography, art and craft and many more.
As you rightly said, happiness is a choice, which we have to make for ourselves, and no one else will do it for us. I wish you lots of happiness.
Thank you for sharing and many thanks for the follow.

Excellent writing Brittany. Writing in any form, especially creatively, is very therapeutic, and those other things you mentioned are helpful also. Reading lets you escape the troubles of your own life for awhile for instance.
Although we all seem to need social media these days, i am also very wary and use it as little as possible. Much ill-will and cruelty and lies reside there.
Many writers and artists are/were troubled souls..Poe, Plath, Hemingway, Van Gogh etc. and probably many more contemporary ones as well. I enjoyed your poem. Thank you for sharing.
