Uh! Face Yoga? How can a few exercises can help regain younger and healthy skin?

What if I told you that you could get a firmer and glowing facial skin without going through painful surgical procedures and injections? That you could sit at home and do a certain set of facial exercises and get all the benefits that an anti-aging cream or expensive facials would provide? well, guess what? Face yoga can do all that for you! Especially in the time when Covid-19 has restricted our movement, such DIY exercises that can provide similar benefits as expensive facial treatments and surgical procedures sound incredible, don't they?

What exactly is facial yoga?

Face yoga is a one-of-a-kind therapy practiced by many celebrities. The treatment includes a variety of facial exercises that can help you improve the tone of your skin, reduce wrinkles, and slim down your face.

The natural aging process has an impact on how our skin and muscles move. This causes a loss of elasticity and an increase in the appearance of wrinkles on the face. It was in 2006 when the Western world really started to take notice of this ancient Indian practice, when they published their study in the Journal of Craniofacial Surgery. The study included simple and basic exercises that were performed for 10 minutes per day. These exercises were meant to be done by all ages with no special equipment required. Then again, in 2018, Northwestern University researchers conducted a study on the effects of facial exercises. They found that after 20 weeks of daily facial exercises, people in the study had measurably firmer skin and more elasticity in their skin.

Things to remember before starting your face exercise routine

As a beginner, it is best to take things slowly at first. Begin with the larger muscles of the face and work your way down to the more delicate areas such as the eyes and mouth. Throughout each pose, remember to keep your posture straight, your chest open, and your breathing steady.

For each exercise, go at your own pace. You may feel warmth or heat, but no pain or discomfort should be felt. Begin by washing your hands and your face. To make it easier for your fingers to glide over your skin without making it too slippery, apply an oil, serum, or cleansing balm. Massage oils or serums into your skin to help the product penetrate and absorb more deeply.

Now let's check out six simple and best exercises for the beginners that will yield best results.

1. Face tapping

This is one of my favourite routines. Face tapping improves blood circulation and relaxes the muscles in your face.

(a) Begin at your brow and rhythmically tap your skin with your fingertips.

(b) Repeat the procedure all the way down your face until you reach your jaw.

(c) Next, massage the back of your neck and across your shoulders.

(d) Next, work your way up the back of your neck to the top of your head.

(e) Hold it for 30 seconds before relaxing. Then repeat 3–5 times more.

This is the most cost-effective and straightforward method for reducing dark circles. You can do it whenever and wherever you want.

(a) Rub your hands furiously together to generate heat in your palms.

(b) Next, rest the bottoms of your palms on your eyes.

(c) Cover your face immediately and allow the heat to seep in.

(d) Hold your position and take slow, deep breaths.

(e) Relax and do it again.

3. Work on your forehead muscles.

During this exercise, the frontalis muscle, which is the major muscle in the front of your forehead, relaxes. Overuse of this muscle can result in tautness, rigidity, and tension. This exercise aids in the reduction of wrinkle lines on the forehead.

(a) Begin by putting your fingertips in the centre of your brow. Check that your fingers are pointing inwards.

(b) Sweep the fingertips outwards across the forehead, applying gentle pressure to the skin. Don't put too much pressure on.

(c) Let go of your fingers and repeat the procedure ten times.

4. Pucker your lips and smile broad

This exercise will help you strengthen your jawline and work on the muscles in your lips. I you want to do away with droopy lips, then try out this exercise.

(a). Pucker your lips as if you are about to kiss.

(b). Then release them into broad open mouthed smile.

(c). Repeat the moment at least 15 to 20 times.

5. Fish face yoga

This exercise helps to tighten and firm the sagging cheeks. If you want a chiseled jawline, then it's a must-try.

(a). Suck in your lips and hold that pose to the count of ten.

(b). Slowly release the pose

(c). Repeat at least 5 times.

6. Wide eyed look

This yoga pos works for wrinkle reduction as well as strengthening the muscles around your eyes.

(a). Place your thumbs beneath your eyes and your forefingers just above your brows

(b). Then, slowly stretch your skin in the opposite direction, causing your eyes to pop out and give you a wide-eyed appearance.

(c) For best results, open your jaw as wide as possible

(d) Relax after holding this pose for 5 to 10 seconds.

This pose should not be repeated. Once a day is plenty, and going overboard can do more harm than good.

7. Blow air to get a natural face lift

Yes! you read that right! This is one of the most effective face exercises for reducing double chins because it engages almost all of the facial and neck muscles. It targets and tones the cheek, jaw, and neck muscles to provide a natural face lift.

(a) First, sit in a chair with your back straight.

(b) Tilt your head back so that your face is facing the ceiling.

(c) Suck your lips again as if about to kiss

(d) Now steadily release air out of your mouth for a few seconds

(e) Drop the pose and begin again.

(f) Relax and repeat at least 10 times.

Benefits of face yoga

The benefits of facial exercises are all-inclusive. People who practice it have firmer skin, more elasticity and a decrease in wrinkles. It is a great way to make your face look more youthful and fresh! I myself have tried few simple exercises and I can say that my skin has definitely benefited from regular exercising that can be done anytime, anywhere. Not only do they provide skin related benefits, they also are a great way to relive stress and provide relaxation to facial muscles that are the very reason of early aging and premature sagging and dull skin

Is it safe to do face yoga without causing any damage to the skin?

Although face yoga has it benefits but need to proceed with caution. Over exercising and overdoing can cause more harm than good. You need to be gentle with your movements and right amount of pressure should be applied. If our moments are hard and forceful, they can increase wrinkles and cause damage to collagen fibers.


Face yoga exercises can go a long way in stimulating your facial muscles that will eventually help in improving the skin tone, tightening of face muscles and a glowing skin. One can combine these exercises and incorporate them into their daily skin care routine and start to feel the difference. As a beginner always start with simple aforementioned exercises and even adhering to this routine religiously will provide remarkable results.
