50 Ways to Beat the Heat and Chill Out

Linda (Kaywood) Bilyeu is a self-published author. Her books are available on Amazon. She writes from the heart—there is no other way.

Staying Cool in the Heat

It's that time of year and the temperatures are scorching. You are wondering how you will survive another season of heat without melting. The sunshine filled days are a bit too hot for your liking.

You are ready for cool breezes and cooler temperatures, but for now you must figure out how to beat the heat in comfort. There are many ways that you might never have considered.

I've listed some ideas that might or might not work for you. Maybe you could use my suggestions to help create your own ideas.

I tend to enjoy the heat more than the cold, but even I have a breaking point. I hope you find some relief and keep your cool because the heat won't last forever.

50-ways-to-beat-the-heat-and-stay-cool

How to Beat the Heat

  1. Jump in a lake! Use caution!
  2. Visit a museum or local library and learn something new!
  3. Bring along some lounge chairs while grocery shopping and hang out in the frozen food section!
  4. Fill a plastic spray bottle with ice cold water and spritz yourself when you feel warm.
  5. Hang a hammock in a shady area and appreciate the gifts of mother nature.
  6. Go to a movie. See a double feature. If temperatures are above 100* then stay for a triple feature!
  7. Hydrate! Drink water! Profuse sweating depletes our body of fluids that we need! Our brain is 70% water. Something to "think" about.
  8. Make multi-color ice cubes using food dye and use them in your tall glass of refreshing water.
  9. Prepare cold, nutritious meals instead of heating up the house using the oven.
  10. Do yard work in the early morning or evening. Avoid mowing your lawn prior to 9 a.m, if by doing so your neighbors might get annoyed.
  11. Plan an exciting adventure and go indoor ice skating.
  12. Be sure and hydrate before going to do exercise outdoors. Our lungs are 90% water and would appreciate the replenishment.
  13. Eat foods that are mostly comprised of water. Fruits and vegetables fit this category. Watermelon, peaches, tomatoes and cucumbers are delicious thirst quenchers.
  14. Fill snack size ziploc bags with ice cubes and place them on the back of your neck to help cool the body off.
  15. Wear hats with wide brims to block the sunshine from your face.
  16. Wet a towel and place it over your head for a temporary, but useful cool down.
  17. Swim in a pool and don't forget your sunscreen!
  18. If your child has an inflatable pool ask if they would share some space with you.
  19. Don't have a pool? Fill your bathtub with cold water and bring along a rubber ducky!
  20. Turn on your lawn sprinklers and while watering your thirsty grass and garden...you could run through the sprinkler and cool off.
  21. Go for some retail therapy at your local mall. Shop, browse and enjoy the free air conditioning.
  22. Use ceiling, table top or floor style fans to help reduce your body temperature.
  23. Lean your head into your freezer for a few seconds for a quick cool off.
  24. Make a pitcher of ice cold lemonade or iced tea and sit in the shade while reading a book.
  25. Remember the less movement the better when temperatures are extremely high, so think like a turtle and don't over emphasize your outdoor moves.

Don't Give Up!

26. Drinking ice cold beer in the heat sounds appealing to some people. Actually this practice is not beneficial. Alcohol dehydrates the body, robbing it of water that actually helps you cool off.

27. Wear lightweight clothing. Cotton material allows your pores to breathe and absorbs sweat.

28. Clothing should be light-colored because this reflects the heat.

29. Plan a date to a comedy club and laugh a lot and forget about the heat for a bit.

30. Go for an outing on a boat. The ocean breezes will cool you off. If you don't have a boat, find a friend who owns a boat.

31. Post your local temperature as your Facebook status and I guarantee your Facebook friends will beat your temperature and that should make you feel better.

32. Never, ever, ever leave a child in a car. Ever.

33. Never, ever, ever leave a pet in a car. Ever.

34. Have a water balloon fight! Boys against girls. The losing team has to fill up the next round of balloons!

35. Treat yourself to a Slurpee and enjoy the brain freeze.

36. Purchase the largest super soaker you can find. Have a "blast" while aiming for your target!

37. Take an exhilarating, cold shower!

Scroll to Continue

38. Place baby wipes in the fridge for instant cool downs!

39. Have a picnic at your local beach or neighborhood park and listen to Beach Boys songs!

40. Practice reverse psychology and imagine yourself in below zero degree temperatures.

41. Plan a vacation to a cooler area. While it's summer in the States it's winter in Australia. Take a trip down under. Vice Versa for the Aussies.

42. Wait patiently for the ice cream truck to come around. A sweet treat is a sure way to beat the heat.

43. The most significant amount of dangerous UVB rays occur between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. It's during this time that you are at most risk for skin cancer and health related issues. Heed the warnings.

44. Overexposure to the sun causes premature wrinkles so always protect your skin.

45. Run cold water over your wrists every couple of hours. This action helps cool the blood which helps cool you!

46. Keep blinds or curtains closed during the hottest part of the day to keep the heat out.

47. Eat smaller meals instead of three large ones. This will prevent your body from overheating while metabolizing food.

48. Pop some popcorn and watch the movie "Ice Age." Envision yourself as a character in the movie! That should cool you off.

49. If you can't beat the heat, why not join it! Enjoy the sunshine. Use appropriate precautions!

50. On the flip side sweating helps rid the body of toxins and viruses! I will emphasize that this should be done in moderation!

Keep on shining!

Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion

  • Headaches, dizziness
  • Excessive sweating
  • Cold, damp skin that's slimy to the touch
  • Irritable or confused
  • Weak pulse
  • Nausea, vomiting

Symptoms of a Heat Stroke

  • Dry skin with no evidence of sweating
  • Confusion, seizures, fainting
  • Fast, strong pulse

  • Get to a cool area or place ASAP
  • Remove heavy clothing
  • Take small sips of water
  • Cool off the skin with a wet cloth or fan
  • Call 911 if a heat stroke is suspected

Keith Urban - 'Til Summer Comes Around

History of the Tan

According to fashion historians the suntan became a fad due to fashion designer Coco Chanel. In the 1920's she returned from a sailing trip in the Riviera and was sporting an "accidental" tan.

She was a golden brown color and others wanted the achieve the same glow.

Previous to this celebrity incident tanning for centuries was considered unattractive and was only achieved by members of the lower working class.

P.S. Your daughters and granddaughter looked very pretty and cheerful like you!

Thanks for SHARING. Pressed all the buttons. Voted up & Socially Shared.

All great ideas and ones that will make summer a great time of life. Here in sunny Florida, wearing a hat should be a requirement in keeping skin healthy. Also love your ideas about drinking lots of water and foods that are mostly water. I am all for the lemonade. What a sense of humor you have too -- sticking your head in the freezer (I've done that one!)!!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on July 13, 2012:

Hi James! I'm happy that you found these tips useful. Bring on the water balloon fights or a super soaker! Thank you for stopping by!:))

Hi Alecia, I hope my reminder about 32/33 will make people remember that the action of leaving a child or pet in cars is just plain wrong. There are no excuses. I hope you get cooler temps soon! Thank you for your comment!

Ruchira from United States on July 11, 2012:

Beach boys WERE my favorite. Thanks for the memories :)

My kid has been using a water gun and sprays on himself occasionally when he is sweating hard...lol

as usual...no one can beat you on this hilarious yet interesting list :))

awesome!! voted up!

Alecia Murphy from Wilmington, North Carolina on July 11, 2012:

It's sad to hear how many people do 32/33 after all this time and knowledge about heat exhaustion/overheating deaths. But I like these suggestions. The humidity here has been too much and we're just hitting mid-July, I don't even wanna imagine what we'll suffer in August. Great hub!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on July 11, 2012:

Hi Mary, the mermaids are my pride and joy and being their mom and granny I enjoy when I can embarrass them, but they enjoy it and give it back:)

The spray water bottle is a great idea! I take it along on walks also. Very refreshing. Thanks for your comment!:)

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on July 11, 2012:

mechesire, rfmoran, cristin and Christy! Thank you for your comments. Yes, a Floridian knows all about the heat, but I like it:) I never had a hammock but my neighbor does and they use it often. I appreciate y'all stopping by.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on July 11, 2012:

Hi Rika, It's always a pleasure to see my sis!! We actually had a thunderstorm today which cooled off the temps a wee bit. Thank you for your offer of icy air, but I'll pass:)

I love your idea of the hot water bottle! That's a superb addition to this hub! I think many people will try that now. We thank you!!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on July 11, 2012:

Hi Vellur, I hope you had a wonderful vacation! Thank you for your compliment on my mermaid photo...my granddaughter is actually five years old in the photo but she fits right in with her mom and aunt. Thanks for visiting!:)

Ann-Christin from UK on July 11, 2012:

Good hub I just wish we had some heat in the UK so I could put it into practice.

Great Hub. Wonderful pics and info. I love your humor. Voted up for awesome and funny.

Rika Susan from South Africa on July 11, 2012:

Terrific list, Linda! Wish I could pass along some of our icy weather here in South Africa!

In our summer my favorite tip can be added to number 14. When I know it is too hot for a comfortable night ahead, I fill a rubber hot water bottle with ice water. I then place this in the freezer for an hour and a half to two hours. With this icy 'companion' at my feet, I cool right down and can go to sleep easily. It remains cold for many hours. It is cheap, it is easy and it works!

Rika

Nithya Venkat from Dubai on July 11, 2012:

Hi Tills, Hahaha! A turtle with a super soaker! My imagination is going wild right now! :-)

I think the freezer would be safer than the oven! Hahaha! Thanks for the laughs! ;)

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on July 11, 2012:

Excellent idea Trinity! I suggested Australia, but the Southern Hemisphere is beautiful also! Thank you for sharing your thoughts!:)

A sizzling list! I think you might want to keep those mermaids close to home ;) Super soakers and turtles...great combination...imagine a turtle chasing you with a super soaker.

Voted up, useful and funny. (I think my husband told me to stick my head in the freezer once...or was that the oven?)

Dexter Yarbrough from United States on July 11, 2012:

I love this list! I am going to tell a few people to go "jump in a lake" today! Awesome!

Trinity M on July 11, 2012:

Just remember the heat won't last forever. Ice Age 3 comes out this weekend!:)

Heather, WOW 112* is inhumane! I can't imagine. Your misting system sounds great! We have some of those in the Disney resort areas. The tourists appreciate them as do the locals.

Thank you all for sharing!!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on July 10, 2012:

Stephanie that's a great idea for your cat! I am going to place a wet towel on my bunny, I didn't even think of that. I recently learned that bunnies can't cool themselves off so Cupcake thanks you also!:) Good luck with the hot temps!!

Hi Jools, I sure hope that you, Nell and Docmo get some sunshine really soon. The rain must clear up before the London Olympics start!!

Rebecca Mealey from Northeastern Georgia, USA on July 10, 2012:

Awesome Hub! It got all the way up to 106 in Hotlanta last week. Gorgeous daughters. I have never heard this Kenny Chestnut song. I like it! I am so used to the Billy Stewart version of Summer time and the living is easy, fish are jumpin' and the cotton is high version.

Daisy Mariposa from Orange County (Southern California) on July 10, 2012:

Linda (Sunshine),

The *List Diva" does it again! Thanks for creating this very helpful and fun list.

Right now, it's 3:15pm in sunny Southern California and 81°F. I would have gone to the lake today that's only a mile from my house, but I'm suffering from an allergic reaction to a spider bite and have to stay indoors.

Heather from Arizona on July 10, 2012:

Great ideas. It's 112 here in AZ this week (nothing out of the ordinary and I'm pretty used to it since I'm a native Arizonian). We have an outdoor misting system that makes a world of difference for sure! Voted useful!

Nell Rose from England on July 10, 2012:

I could feel the heat from here! lol! these are great ideas, I just wish we could use them over here! its been the wettest summer for a hundred years! 3 months of torrential rain! its driving me mad! lol!

Dana Strang from Ohio on July 10, 2012:

Another amazing list. These are great ideas! I almost don't mind the heat so much anymore... almost.

I will expand on number 8 - make ice cubes using fruit juice and put them in your cocktail for fun colors AND fun flavors!

Mohan Kumar from UK on July 10, 2012:

I wish we had a hot enough summer here in UK to do all that - but so far- nada! I'll print this out for Florida, I think. I'm packing cool cotton stuff. As usual, sensible advice, outrageous humor and warm sentiments. You've done it again, Sunshine. VU and awesome.

Stephanie Henkel from USA on July 10, 2012:

This heat wave is giving me cabin fever as I tend to hide out in the AC! I definitely follow the "least amount of movement" and "eat ice cream" philosophy! When we do have to be more active in the heat, your tips for cooling down and staying cooler are wonderful! I even wet a towel with cool water and wipe down the cat ... believe it or not, he loves it! Voted up and tweeted!

Terrye Toombs from Somewhere between Heaven and Hell without a road map. on July 10, 2012:

So, skinny dippin' in a lake with a cowboy at midnight would be acceptable? They could watch for gators while I cool off. :) VUM!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on July 10, 2012:

Bill, I could so picture you and Bev hanging out in the frozen food section. I would do it. I've considered doing it many times. Walmart keeps their frozen food department in insanely frigid temperatures. Thanks for your message.

Sherri from Southeastern Pennsylvania on July 10, 2012:

I'll add to 16, put that cold wet towel around your neck and let it drape onto your chest. Change it every 5 minutes.

Wonderful hub...how did you create that pic of your daughters and grandchild? It's awesome!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on July 10, 2012:

Hi Tina, That's what is great about this hub! It's useful all year long since it's always summer somewhere in this world! I'll be sure and remind you of this info when you are in the hot, humid months of summer! Thank you for your comment.

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on July 10, 2012:

Josh, It's time for you to go shopping for that rubber ducky! Just sayin'! Thanks for bringing your witty humor to the hub :)

Carissa, Good timing with the ice cream!!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on July 10, 2012:

Those are the cutest mermaids ever. Guess I don't have to tell you how I feel about the heat. I think by now, the world of people who know me.....KNOW!

I LOVE your list, GF....you covered just about every way imagineable.......and I use every one........always will.

This is actually a public service you have published!! Thanks!!

Linda, this had me smiling in places. I love #3 on your list and am just imagining the freezer section in my local supermarket - hee hee.

It is pouring down with rain again tonight where I live and this morning our thermostat temperature was so low that it triggered out central heating to come on - in July for God's Sakes!

This hub was a welcome tonic - I wish I was sitting in your yard right now, feet up, supping on a beer, watching the world go by.....warm!

Sunshine625, i wish i can enjoy that heat now. The whole of East Africa is freezing, today it was extremely cold. I like the idea of visiting a museum, i have a number of months since i visited one. Voted up and useful.

Number three is easily my favorite. I have this picture in my mind of hundreds of shoppers camped out in front of the frozen peas in the grocery store. LOL Great suggestions!

What a great list and so many good tips! I am still waiting for warmer weather here but I will remember your list when (if) it comes! Extreme heat is tiresome and also dangerous so this list must be very useful! You did a great job as always!

Linda,

Awesome list! But you know me I can't resist from being funny...I don't have a ruber duckie, what ever should I do?? ROFL. Great job on this one, I will remember to never leave my pet in the car, I don't have to worry about the kid part...yet!

Thanks for another list well done Linda! Keep 'em coming!
