Even the happiest of people have days when they just don’t feel very happy. Let’s face it, many times when we look at what’s going on around us we don’t see anything to be happy about. Being happy can sometimes be a challenge, but today more than ever we are aware of how important it is to be happy, both for our mental and our physical health.
Happiness doesn’t come naturally to everyone, think about all the people you’ve ever met; are the majority of them happy? Do most of them consider the glass half full? Personally, I have to say that I’ve come across more pessimists than optimists. There has to be a reason for this. Why aren’t we taught to be happy? I’ve met many people, myself included, who were taught to hide our emotions and many are led to believe that they shouldn’t show happiness when something goes their way because that might “jinx” their good luck.
In many cultures and societies people are taught to suppress their happiness. They are led to believe that this is what will help them succeed in life. We are just now starting to hear more about how being happy is what will really help us succeed in life. Strange, isn’t it, that we needed to read the research in order to work that one out.
Being happy isn’t as easy as it should be. In fact, being happy might even take a little getting used to, after all we are all “programed” for survival and not for happiness, but I’m going to show you 5 easy things you can do to start being more happy today.
1. Quit Watching the News
This is the first thing I did on my journey to become more happy. Watching the News is bad for you. Give it up! There are so many new things going on in the world, some are incredible and amazingly beautiful, but when you watch the News you’ll find that not much time is dedicated to these things. The News is full of stories of wars, terrorism, rape, murder, rising prices of living and more. It’s no wonder that most people are depressed and pessimistic after watching that. I quit the News and you know what happened? I started to feel much happier and calmer. I wasn’t hearing all this negative stuff every day, and only then, once it was gone, did I feel the unhealthy effect that watching the News had had on my body. Try it, it works!
2. Get Some More Exercise
We all know that exercise is good for our health. But did you know that exercise has an immense effect on your happiness?
Besides the wonderful effect that exercise has on your overall happiness, these are just a few of the other benefits of exercising regularly:
- You’ll have more control over your weight and your health
- You’ll have better posture
- Improves self-confidence
- You’ll have more energy
- Reduces stress and anxiety
- You’ll sleep better
- Sharpens your memory
And if those benefits aren’t enough exercise can be a fun way to meet people and make new friends.
It’s not always easy just to make the switch and start exercising. It can even take time, but there are so many different ways to get there. You can start with taking 20 minute walks daily, or exercising at home. Crank up the music and dance – no one’s watching. That is sure to put a smile on your face and in your heart.
Whatever you decide to do, you will get there. Don’t forget all it takes are baby steps.
3. Go Outside
Get some fresh air. Just being in nature boosts our mood and our happiness. You don’t have to be outside for hours, even 20 minutes is long enough to feel the benefits of being outdoors. Feel the sun on your face, take a brisk walk alone or with a friend, visit your local park, go hiking or to the beach. Whatever you decide to do you’ll be surprised how fresh and vitalized you’ll feel after spending time outdoors.
4. Help Others
Helping others always makes us feel happier. This one is so easy to do and there are so many ways that you can help others; help out a family member or friend, volunteer your time to help others, or help out a random stranger.
There are so many volunteer opportunities all around us. Everyone has something they know how to do which will benefit others at a school, a local shelter, the hospital, or with animals. Not sure how to find the right place for you? Google volunteer opportunities in your area - there are always organizations looking for volunteers to help them.
Helping others is so rewarding you might even become addicted and the best part is that you can cause a chain reaction. People that have received help often go on to help others too.
5. Cuteness to the Rescue
If you really need a quick pick-me-up all you need to do is looks for pictures of cute puppies or kittens (or whatever it is that you find cute). And if you still need something to make you smile there are endless cute and funny videos online which will help put a smile on your face.
Motivational videos are also your friend, and luckily there is no shortage of them online. We are so lucky that with a few clicks we have a wealth of inspiration at out fingertips. There are so many excellent inspirational speakers who we all have access to right now. I watch an inspirational video every morning to start the day off with a bang. It's a great way to start the day filled with a new energy, new hope and most importantly, happiness.
Of course there are lots of other ways to be happy but start off with these and build yourself up from there. Don’t forget to be grateful and to smile. You might not be feeling happy yet but with a huge smile on your face you’re already half way there.

I think the key to happiness is to stay active, mentally and physically. In our culture we are taught to believe that work is only a necessary evil, that extended periods of idle leisure time are the goal. Yet the human organism, as with any other organism in nature, is genetically programmed to be in a constant state of activity, apart from sleeping. Certainly leisure is great, but we should do things like exercise or writing during these leisure periods to keep us from falling into depression often caused by a lack of sensory stimulation. Excellent tips! You're so right about skipping the news. I rarely watch and I've found that I'm not really missing much, either. Seems there's rarely any news that's actually new! Rather, it's just a variation on a not-so-happy theme. I'd much rather watch puppies and kittens online!
