New Year’s has come and gone, and your longstanding New Year’s resolution may be to lose weight. This year may present different challenges than past years because you may be spending a lot more time at home instead of at the office. The refrigerator and your stash of junk food are only steps away.

Nevertheless, there are plenty of ways you can take a positive step forward to losing weight during the upcoming year. Your personal Covid safety measures of staying at home can help you lose weight. These ideas can help get you started:

  1. Take advantage of ordering groceries online.
  2. Consider a make-it-at-home food service.
  3. Join an online diet support group.
  4. Take advantage of not being around sabotagers.
  5. Purchase a new healthy cookbook, and use it.

1. Ordering Groceries Online

Ordering groceries online prevents impulse buying. If you shop when you are hungry and those Christmas candies are on sale, you may succumb by tossing them in your cart. Who knows? You may even open the bag to nibble on your way home. If you are like me, if no one sees you eat it, then the bad food almost doesn't count. (Well, until you hop on the scale at least.) However, if you are not in the store, you will not be tempted by the guilty pleasures the store showcases, and you will not have alone time driving to eat it.

2. Consider Pre-Packaged or Portioned Food Service Subscriptions

It is hard to limit yourself to a portion. In fact, some portion sizes may be smaller than you anticipate. One way to ensure that you limit yourself to the correct portion size is to purchase your food in portions. Many food services, such as HelloFresh or Blue Apron offer food in specific meal portions. You can also select calorie conscious menus to ensure that you are eating meals that are low-calorie.

3. Join a Weight Loss Support Group

There are many support groups that can help you shed pounds. There are even some online options that allow you to make wagers and reward you with money if you lose weight. My husband has been winning money on a site called DietBet. Simply select a bet, and try to lose the correct percentage of weight within the allotted timeframe. Interaction with a Dietbet group allows you to use any diet you wish to lose weight, but you can share your successes and failures or get ideas to help shed those unwanted pounds.

Weight Watchers and other diet programs also offers online options. If you participate in one of these groups, everyone you share ideas with will be losing weight on the same program.

Since you are probably spending more time at home and may be looking for at-home activities, you are more likely to be active in the community and take advantage of the online support group tools and camaraderie. This may help you succeed because you may be more likely to use the support group as opposed to just pay for it.

4. Avoid Diet Sabotagers

You have probably been in a situation where you are losing weight. Then Aunt Edna invites you to dinner. All of a sudden, you cannot get through dinner without trying her famous home-baked pecan pie. Good news. Thanks to Covid, you are probably not going to Aunt Edna’s or anywhere else where your relatives can tempt you or feel insulted if you do not try the treats they have purchased. Take advantage of the solitude to try to eat healthy without sabotagers harming your progress.

5. Explore Your Inner Chef: Buy and Use a Healthy Cookbook

In many regions, restaurants can only offer takeout or serve outside. If you live in an area where it gets cold in the winter, eating outside may not be enjoyable or optimal. Ordering in is not always attractive because the food may arrive cold, and you are still stuck cleaning up after you eat. Therefore, now is the perfect time to start cooking. Preparing your own food allows you to control exactly what is in every meal.

Let 2021 be the year that you try new healthy and low-calorie foods. Break out a new healthy cookbook or search online for some calorie stream-lined recipes. If you are spending more time at home, you are likely to have more time to cook. Working at home makes it easy to toss an entree in a crockpot, marinate some chicken in low-calorie salad dressing or prepare another diet-friendly meal.

Recently, I have been trying new recipes from The Defined Dish, by Alex Snodgrass. The recipes are healthy and delicious. Many of them look impressive too. You may have to order a few items that you do not usually keep in the house, such as fish sauce and arrowroot starch, but many recipes use these items, so one or two purchases will get you through a lot of recipes. So far, I have tried four recipes, and I have already made three of them multiple times. If you have trouble finding some of the ingredients. look for them online. Many of these recipes are easy to prepare, require minimal cleanup, and allow you to modify them for gluten free or keto cooking.

Following these ideas can make staying at home a very diet-friendly environment. You will have control over what is in your food. Additionally, you will not be tempted to impulse buy unhealthy foods if you order online and will not be attending family functions that can sabotage your progress. This is the year to fulfill yout weight loss resolution.
