But did you know that this fruit is not only tasty, but has tons of health benefits as well? If this is a new bit of information for you, keep on reading, you will surely be shocked!

Eating a few slices of lemon everyday can really save lives!

In this article I’ve tried to collect all the health benefits and advantages of lemon – from head to toe!

21 advantages that you should know

1. Stimulates hair growth. It can also help you to regulate the blood flow in the scalp and fight against hair loss by scrubbing lemon water on the top of your head (this can also help the hair to become healthy and shiny). Additionally, its mildly acidic nature can help you fight against dandruff, too.

2. Can ease fever. Just drink a glass of lemon juice that will increase your perspiration, therefore causing your temperature to decrease. Also, drinking a cup of lemon tea can also be very helpful.

3. Can help you to stay calm, fights insomnia. Lemon contains potassium that will help you to fight mental stress and depression. Use lemon oil in aromatherapy to fight insomnia.

4. Can cure throat infections, flu and common cold. Due to the lemon’s antibacterial property, drinking lemonade or applying a few drops of lemon juice on your meal can help you fight sore throat and flu symptoms as well. Gargle with a mixture of one lemon’s juice, (glass of) water and sea salt (1tsp) 3 times a day and sore throat won’t cause you more problems.

5. Can stop nose bleeding. Just apply a few drops of lemon juice on a cotton pad or tissue and place it in the bleeding nose.

7. Prevents dental problems. Applying some drops of lemon juice on a toothache can easily help you to ease the pain; meanwhile some drops on a bleeding gum can stop the bleeding. Additionally, lemons can prevent inflammations of the tongue as well. Its alkaline nature helps to kill bacteria on the skin, therefore prevents blackheads and acne. There are several soaps, shower gels and handwashes available on the market that contain lemon extracts – these usually have an antibacterial effect as well.

Tips for buying

If you are planning to buy some lemons to enjoy all the above mentioned advantages of this fruit, the best is if you buy lemons that are firm and relatively heavy for their size and have vibrant yellow skin.

Try to avoid lemons that have damaged or discolored skin – this is a sign that the lemon was probably stored improperly or the fruit is way older than it is supposed to be.

Tips for storing

You can keep lemons fresh for days at a normal temperature, or put them into the drawer of your fridge to be able to store it even longer.

Additionally, you can also freeze the grated peel or the whole lemon and later grate it (the whole!) to be able to give and incredible zest to your dishes all year long. This is a common method used by many chefs on the world.

I really appreciated the information in this article. My wife discovered a lemon cleanse the other day that also helps to lose weight. I've tried it for a couple of days and I was amazed! I actually did not crave food and felt full most of the day. I'm not crazy about going a whole 10 days like some people do but I do believe that 3 days or so at a time is great. It is simply 3/4 cup of fresh squeezed lemon juice, 3/4 cup of Grade A Maple Syrup or Organic Honey, 8 cups of water , and 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of Cayenne Pepper. Stir it up and don't eat anything while you're on it. Just drink water and this mixture. Thanks again for the nice info. :)

Pat Kane from Belfast, Ireland on September 10, 2012:

On the negative side, bartenders love lemon to dry your drink so you get that thirst for more coke with ice. lol.

On the positive side, this fruit is practically miraculous. Thousands of people including Lou Corona and Dan McDonald from youtube use it in their lemon ginger blast, every morning and swear by it's antibacterial and antiviral properties. Thanks for this hub.

Lemons are one of my favorite fruits to use in cooking. I also used a lot of Lemon oil when I used to have PMS. The smell has always helped me with nausea for some reason. When I was feeling very bad, my husband would rub my neck and head with the oil. Great hub, I voted up and tweeted.

The thing I miss most about Southern California, (aside from the kids) is having my own lemon, lime and citrus fruits available all year. We couldn't even give them away.

They are surprisingly expensive where we live now, but they are still essential. Thanks for the extensive information.

Donna Hilbrandt from Upstate New York on September 07, 2012:

Wow. Fantastic information! I love lemons for eating and drinking but I was unaware of the health benefits and other ways you can use them. The only wag I have used them is to throw the finds into my garbage disposal and let it grind through. It eliminates odor

I'll have to try the aromatherapy for my family and me. Voted up and sharing.

Sophie (author) from United Kingdom on September 07, 2012:

Thank you dear ladies for your comments! :)

Mama Kim: your child is the second person now who loves licking lemon wedges... My sister was doing it a lot too, when she was young.

I was never able to eat it plain, but I enjoy eating slices with food or putting it into drinks and then eating it.

It is just incredible how healthy this fruit is!

Aloe Kim on September 07, 2012:

I love to use the leftover peels to make cleaner out of ^_^ Several of the older women in my family use lemon juice to reduce the appearance of age spots. It's also great for rough and sometimes off colored elbows too. ^_^ OH... and using it in the hair also gives the hair natural highlights. I didn't know about all the health benefits as well, wonderful ^_^ I guess my 3 year old is on to something when he asks me for a lemon wedge and then goes off to lick it for the next 30 minutes. Fantastic hub and very pretty presentation. voted up and pinned.

carol stanley from Arizona on September 07, 2012:
