8 Must-Try Essential Oil Recipes for Your New Diffuser

I love smelling beautiful aromas. My wife and I often find ourselves gravitating toward the candle aisle whenever we go to Target, or really anywhere that has scented candles. We will often take turns smelling different candles—and either holding it out for the other to smell, or quickly putting the cover back on and returning it to the shelf. Once we find a scent we both like, it comes home. There’s always that fear, though, that it’s one of those candles that smells amazing in the store, but as soon it’s lit, it’s so over-powering that it almost hurts to breathe it in. In those cases, we have a spot called the “Island of Misfit Candles.” That’s where we put all of those outcast candles that for one reason or another, are no longer desired.

Recently, I have been educating myself on the health benefits and general scent possibilities of essential oils. And just the other day, I got myself a brand spanking new oil diffuser courtesy of my mother-in-law. And this one is really neat, too, because it’s LED and glows in a myriad of colors.

For those who may not be familiar, an essential oil is a natural oil that is created from a distillation process. This process allows for the purest of aromas and holistic qualities to be extracted. The flavor/scent options are nearly endless, and the recipe combinations are equally limitless. Here are a few that I very much look forward to experimenting with.

How Essential Oils Are Made

Morning Refresher

Morning Refresher Essential Oil Blend

First thing in the morning, some people reach for coffee, others for soda—but this may be a great, natural alternative to help pick you up before your day starts. I think that a lot of people are familiar with orange juice in the morning. As such, this would work out really nicely to have flowing into the air as you are waking up and getting ready for your day.

Morning Refresher Blend Recipe:

  • 4 drops Wild Orange
  • 4 drops Peppermint

Wild Orange is a powerful cleanser and purifying agent that protects against seasonal and environmental threats. It contains antioxidants and provides a sweet, fresh citrus aroma. When blended with peppermint, you get additional minty and herbaceous elements. Peppermint wonderfully promotes healthy digestion and can even make you feel like you're breathing just a little bit easier.

Summertime Essential Oil Blend

This one kind of reminds me of those warm summer days when you go and open up every window to let the breeze cut through and clear out your space. When I was a kid, one of the greatest things I always looked forward to after a long, cold winter was the smell of fresh and clean. I always found that in the format of cleaning supplies that had a lemon and citrus smell to them. This relaxing aroma brings me directly back to those youthful memories.

Summertime Blend Recipe:

  • 3 drops Grapefruit
  • 3 drops Lavender
  • 2 drops Lemon
  • 2 drops Spearmint

Grapefruit provides a nutty citrus scent that quickly uplifts your mood. Lavender is widely known to help with relaxation while providing a light and powdery aroma. Lemon cleanses and purifies the air around you while promoting a positive mood. Spearmint gives that minty edge to add focus to this blend, providing and overall uplift for your mood.

Liquid Sunshine

Liquid Sunshine Essential Oil Blend

To continue the smell of citrus, this version of a citrus oil blend is very much the opposite of the Summertime blend, above. Instead, this blend is designed more for mood enhancement and confidence.

Liquid Sunshine Blend Recipe:

  • 3 drops Wild Orange
  • 3 drops Grapefruit
  • 2 drops Lemon
  • 2 drops Bergamot

Bergamot provides a calming and soothing aroma. It is often used in massage therapy for its calming benefits as well as for providing skin-purifying benefits. In conjunction with the trifecta of citrus, the bergamot adds a spicy floral note, making it a very unique blend.

Allergy Relief

Waking up to a stuffy nose and nasal pressure is never good. This should help clear your head quickly. The story goes that you should apply a drop or two to the bottom of your feet.

Allergy Relief Blend Recipe:

  • 3 drops Peppermint
  • 3 drops Lavender
  • 3 drops Lemon

"Wait a minute, you want me to put this on my feet?"

Yes, that's exactly what I want you to do with it. If you want to know more about why and how this works, you must read this article from David Wolfe.

Silent Night

Silent Night Essential Oil Blend

If you’re anything like me, you may have a hard time turning off your brain before bed. Aside from other techniques, hopefully this one in a diffuser next to your bed will do the trick. Sometimes using a pre-made blend is perfectly fine, too, and often is much cheaper. I bought Sleep Aid from Plant Therapy and use it every single night.

Silent Night Blend Recipe:

  • 3 drops Lavender
  • 3 drops Wild Orange
  • 3 drops Roman Chamomile

Roman Chamomile is second only to lavender for its calming effects. The sweet, floral aroma ties together with the lavender and wild orange to make an outstanding relaxation blend that should easily and swiftly help you fall into a deep slumber.

Be Happy

Certain smells are just ingrained into your brain to bring a smile to your face. This is very likely one of them.

Be Happy Blend Recipe:

  • 3 drops Bergamot
  • 2 drops Geranium
  • 3 drops Lavender

For me, happiness is not getting bugged... literally. Geranium is a natural insect repellent with its dry and floral notes. This has been used for making skin clean and clear as well as strengthening hair.

Spiced Cider

Spiced Cider Essential Oil Blend

Going into fall and winter, this could very well be a staple in place of that favorite holiday candle.

Spiced Cider Blend Recipe:

  • 4 drops Wild Orange
  • 3 drops Cinnamon
  • 3 drops Ginger

There really isn't much else out there that says fall/autumn like the smell of spiced cider. What really does it here is the Cinnamon, which has so many benefits. Cinnamon has metabolic function improvements as well as maintaining a healthy immune system, just to name a few. It brings a woody and biting note, and when blended with the citrus from the Wild Orange and the earthy spice of the Ginger, it makes the perfect smells with no apples in site. Ginger is known to reduce bloating, gas, and the occasional indigestion, so when you're done with your huge Thanksgiving meal, have this in the air to help settle all that food.

Pumpkin Pie

Pumpkin Pie Essential Oil Blend

Another aroma that's synonymous with autumn is pumpkin pie. This blend of warm spices is perfect for winding down at the end of a long day, or for snuggling up with someone you love in front of a crackling fire.

Pumpkin Pie Blend Recipe:

  • 2 drops Ginger
  • 2 drops Cassia
  • 1 drop Clove
  • 1 drop Vanilla
  • 2 drops Cardamom

Cassia is similar to Cinnamon and has a strong, spicy aroma while supporting a healthy immune system. Clove can be found in a wide range of places such as gum, candy, and many fall recipes. Clove adds a warm, woody scent with a pleasant sub-note of leather. The "Queen of Spices," also known as Cardamon, brings a calming quality that is particularly known for relaxing people when going on long trips in the car. Perhaps this will be a great one to have with you in the car for that long drive to see family during the holidays.

Essential Oil Sources

There are a lot of companies out there that produce essential oils, and I have researched a ton of them. I have read about their processes (when shared), read reviews, and evaluated the pricing. Young Living has quickly become one of the larger and more well-known distributors/manufacturers, and it is essentially a sell-from-home outfit, not terribly unlike Pampered Chef, Avon, and Lia Sophia. These products are all fine and good, but I tend to lean more toward smaller outfits, the true home business, mom-and-pop type places.

Mountain Rose Herbs is a fantastic company. It is non-GMO certified, reasonably priced, and they have a fantastic website, which has huge appeal for me, personally.

Like I mentioned above, I had placed an order through Plant Therapy. They have very good pricing, and I think this is a great source for those wanting to get started and try it out, but I don’t want to dump a ton of money into it without knowing for sure.

Please feel free to share your essential oil blend recipes or a website you trust buying from. Smell well out there!
