11 Tips for Living With Methadone Sweating. How to Deal with Excessive Sweating

Do You Drip?

Methadone can be a life saver (literally!) but although it works very well for opiate addicts, it can cause some unpleasant side effects.

One of the most commonly experienced side effects is excessive sweating, particularly at night. Although an incorrect (too low or too high) daily dosage can trigger sweating, most people who deal with methadone sweats perspire as a direct consequence of an appropriate dosage. Methadone won’t make everyone sweat, but those that do experience excessive sweat even when appropriately dosed will likely experience the side effect for as long as the methadone is used.

And although getting a "little sweaty" doesn’t sound so bad, those of us who have lived through methadone sweat filled days and even wetter nights can attest to the real discomfort of the side effect.

Here are some tips for reducing sweat…and for living more comfortably with the perspiration we do have.

Sweat Be Gone

in no particular order...

  1. Wear loose fitting clothing, light in weight and of natural materials. Your methadone sweats may seem independent of room temperature, but staying cool can limit the frequency of sweating – after all, if you sweat in the cold you'll sweat worse in the heat!
  2. Lose excessive weight! Extra fat heats us up and carrying that weight around requires greater exertion.
  3. Get fit. A finely tuned cardiovascular system will deal more easily with stair climbing and other daily activities that can sometimes get us sweating. (Also – if you’re going to be sweaty anyway, you might as well look normal for a change and sweat at the gym with all the other sweaty bodies!)
  4. Avoid spicy food. Chili pepper fools the body into a sweat response. You don’t need any help with that one…
  5. Wear antiperspirant. (OK – this is probably a no brainer – but there is a difference between antiperspirant and deodorant. Look from a brand that has a high percentage of aluminum chloride as an active ingredient)
  6. Upgrade to prescription strength antiperspirant. Your doctor can prescribe a roll-on stick that is stronger and more effective than over the counter brands. (Drysol is on common name brand).
  7. If you really can't stand the sweat, you can talk with your doctor about Botox injections at the sweat glands. These injections can greatly limit perspiration. There are other surgical procedures that target the sweat glands, but these are quite serious and risky operations.
  8. Take cool showers. OK, another no brainer, but sweat smells, and cool showers can help you to live more comfortably.
  9. Talcum powder. People from tropical climates swear by talcum powder as a way to stay dry-feeling in the heat.
  10. Try to stay calm. Stress can trigger sweat.
  11. Drink plenty of water. Dehydration will only worsen methadone induced constipation.

we have been taking methadone for about 2 years now and we are on 90 mg and the sweating is bad is sweating with me is way worse I work in the factories and it's very hot in there and I stay soaking wet all day long but on the other hand my girlfriend works in the restaurant industry and it's very embarrassing for her because of having to wait on her tables and sweating like that we live in Georgia and you know the heat here is ridiculous it stays hot here year-round just about methadone had saved Our life and made a tremendous deal in our lives is there anyone or anything out there that can help us stop the sweating that you don't have to get it from your doctor that's something over the counter that don't cost as much????

haha cold showers go away its not just sweating its not being able to regulate your temp a cold shower actually hurts my skin just like sweating having wet skin and then being cold it is a war of hot cold day in out its maddening

Natural crystal deoderant works best. It actually kills the bacteria that causes odor from sweating plus keeps underarms, underboobs and anywhere you sweat dry.

Vickianne on April 10, 2017:

Hi everyone, well I'm back and can very gladly report that Terazosin (Hytrin) works amazingly well. I've been taking 1mg since 21-3-17 and its changed my life. Also, it didn't cause any blood pressure problem. So, give it a go, don't put up with sweating when it's so easily fixed.

Vickianne on March 22, 2017:

I'm on 70mg and I'm a 60 year old woman living in Australia. My excessive sweating started about 12 years ago with menopause. I've done the hormone treatment, the natural treatments, pretty much tried everything. When menopause stopped about 6 years ago, the heavy sweating didn't. Going off methadone isn't an option for me as I've learned over the years that it stabilizes me best. However, I'm well over the sweating. I did a lot of internet research and came up with a drug called Terazosin. I went to my doctor yesterday and discussed it with her. She was willing to write the prescription and I started last night. I am taking 1mg per night. So far so good. I couldn't believe I had my first dry night in years. It's very early days yet, so I'll keep you all posted. I am not at work today but I will be tomorrow and that will be the big test as I'm an office cleaner. Usually the sweating is embarramssing and difficult to deal with. This medication can lower blood pressure so I am having that checked each day at my chemist. Fingers crossed, I'll let you know how I'm going tomorrow.

Kerri on January 20, 2017:

I am on 115 mgs of methadone and it has helped me so much with my addiction. Best choice for me but I had a problem with sweating as well when I was at 75 mgs. I was comfortable on that dose for a few months and I noticed that I was always hot and would sweat way more than normal with the slightest bit of movement. My clinic sold those supplements that are supposed to help with the side effects of methadone but the doctor there actually told me that I would get the same results from just taking any cheap over the counter multivitamin. I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone mention this in the comments. I spend about $3 every 2-3 months at the dollar store on their brand of a complete multivitamin for adults and it made a noticeable difference. I also heard someone else say that they were told that Centrum Silver vitamins works too. I feel so bad for the people that can't find relief. I hope you all find something in time.

Nothing has ever worked for me. And I take 240mg per day for the last 22 years. I do not take methadone for addiction. I have to take it for pain relief !! I will be 63 yrs old this year-2016. And I have been taking methadone since I was 18 years old. The heat and humidity makes your methadone leave your body faster then in the winter. I leave in Massachusetts. So the problem starts in July and end in late September. And 22 year drug counselors know nothing about this issue. When I was on methadone for addiction they had no idea about this. The older I get the more I have to suffer with it. When I go to Vegas or Florida in the summer time. I have to just stay in ac places, No more going to the beach !

Luke on June 19, 2016:

I've been on methadone for 7 Months and yes it's a life saver to get away from heroin... 70mg daily I would drip sweat in a 68 degree AC room in boxers and a tank top.. Im talking two to three showers a day... I told them I'm over methadone and the sweating so I started my detox I went from 70mg daily to 68mg daily and I haven't sweated a single drop... I've also began force hydration with gator aid or powerade.... Your sweating because you're high or youre jonsin and wanna use methadone needs to be precise and is extremely affected by one milligram that's why no one should get take homes and should be monitored daily at your clinic for 6 Months before take homes are given

Jacob b on May 18, 2016:

I use vitidone to combat the sweating, while it certainly does not eliminate the issue is has greatly reduced the amount I sweat by about 1/3 which is a huge win. I am up and moving forward work 8-13 hours a day, and now while it still occurs it's no longer a embarrassing amount, I also use gold bond and togeather I have achieved the ability to function in the hot and fast paced restaurant industry. I know that getting fit would improve this even more, but while I am out of shape I am not overweight being 5'10 and 165lbs.

Lexie on April 15, 2016:

To me sweating is one of the least problematic side effects. The excruciating joint pain associated with taking methadone is much worse, so I hardly even think about sweating.

It's not the sweating itself that even bothers me but the fact that I am really cold because of it. It's barely an issue during the day or maybe I got used to it now but nighttime is is tough.

I wake up at night completely soaked and everywhere that is not under my quilt is freezing. Changing clothes obviously helps. Though having to do that 5 times a night you run out of clothes quickly. Best solution? Hot water bottle. Helps me a lot. (might be a problem if you share a bed and your partner is always feeling hot...) I also put 3-5 blankets on me. That way my partner can still have a fan on and cool down, while I can hide from the cold, and keep the heat from hot water bottle inside.

They also have a vitamin specifically for methadone called "vitadone" and it helps with the sweating and the sugar cravings and alot of the other methadone side effects.. It's worth a try and I heard it works great. I dose at 130mgs a day and they have helped me tremendously... Just letting you guys know..

I am taking 95 mg of methadone a day. Have always had a tendency to sweat more than others! I did Botox injections under my arms about 6 years ago and it still has almost eliminated all underarm sweating ($1000)! Now my head sweats profusely and I'm hoping the vitadone works! Im going to say that methadone is quite magic it has been a life saver as a mother, wife, daughter, and a person I'm general! I will admit it's sad realization to be dependent on anything just to feel normal! Hoping to titrate off after 1 year! Scared after seeing what others have experienced after quitting all I can do is try! Sweating weight gain no libido beats chasing black and always letting people down including myself!

1- systemic anticholinergic (e.g. glycopyrrolate

2- systemic non-anticholinergic (e.g. clonidine 0.1–

3.0 mg up to 3 times daily or topiramate 25–200 mg twice

daily or use antihistamine for opioid-induced sweating

Ive been on Methadone for close to ten years and have had horrible hot flashes and sweats the whole time until a year ago. My counselor told me about Vitadone, but not to buy it, just buy 1aday supplement. I looked up both vitamins and if you take a regular 1aday or two it is the same thing but way cheaper. Anyway that really helped me, but not as much as I hoped. I started a slooowww taper from 130 mg about two years ago and am down to 30 mg without any withdraw symptoms. I no longer sweat abnormally, am no longer constipated and can actually get off when having sex. I would try reducing your dose VERY slowly if you are on a higher dose. If you are willing to try that, you will see some benefit.

I have chronic pain due to a spinal injury and am prescribed methadone for it... 110 Mg /day for about 4 years now and its great.

That said, I do suffer intolerable sweating and have found that my medical marijuana helps almost instantly, but I can't stand being stoned all day. I'll be trying some of these suggestions.

I've noticed that the people in the UK seem to be the only ones suffering with tooth decay "Due to methadone". For that I use something called "Dental hygiene". Try it guys! It seems to be working here in "The colonies".

Shan on September 02, 2013:

I have been on Methadone for just over a year. Right now I am at 170 mgs. a day. I see my Dr on Wednesday & not only will be asking to cut my dose, but about all of the suggestions on this page. I am so embarrassed to go out in public because of my sweating. In the middle of December, shopping for Christmas, in Northwest Montana, where it is minus 5 degrees, I break out in just awful sweating bouts. I started using Poise pads but I can't reach the middle of my back in Kohls. I can't even try on clothes anymore because it is so hard to get them on & off. Y husband is on Suboxone, but the VA pays for his & we pay out of pocket for my meds. These meds have saved our lives & our marriage. We got addicted together & he was clean about a year before I had finally had enough of being pill sick when I didn't have any Percocet. I have a severe case of Osteoporosis since the age of 30 & we always thought that was why my teeth were progressively getting worse. I never once guessed it could be the Methadone making them worse than they already are. I have a great relationship with my addiction Dr & PCP so, hopefully we can figure it out. We have had my blood tested several times. Since I had a hysterectomy yrs ago, we thought it could be menopause or my thyroid, but everything came back normal. I will keep checking back here in case there are any new ideas.

I'm not sure if it's available in the states but in Canada, at my clinic, the doctor prescribes 5mg of oxybutynin which is for urinary incontinence but works amazing for sweating. I used to drip sweat even in the dead of winter which would make me even more cold but I take this pill with my methadone and besides drying out my eyes, it works amazing.

Swoop_g on October 27, 2012:

Wow, I never realized that this many people suffer from methadone sweat like I do. I am on methadone for 1) pain management and 2) If I have a bottle of opiate pain-killers I will keep taking them as soon as my pain comes back till they are gone. I have had the cartilage removed from my hip joint from an accident that shattered my pelvis at the hip joint and I also have several herniated disks in my back and neck. I can't get a doctor to prescribe me any decent opiate pain pills for the pain I have so I go to a drug abuse clinic to get methadone. Which is OK by me I really don't use drugs anymore so I'm not worried about the drug test and I now get two weeks worth of take-outs so I'm not complaining. What I am complaining about is my body's reaction to the methadone. I have to have a fan blowing air across my body at all times just to stay somewhat dry. I'm in a wheelchair and even when I wheel to the kitchen to eat a meal my face and neck starts beading up almost immediately and within 30 mins my t-shirt is soaked. I am only on 90 mgs per day and I no longer do much strenuous activity but I have recently gotten a bicycle and I can ride it somewhat for short periods. I do sweat some while on the bike but with the air flow I don't get soaked. I just ordered the Vitadone and will give it an honest try. If in two to three weeks I don't feel like it does any good I will go to my GP to try the bladder meds as I have noticed my urine production has trippled or quadrupled in the past couple of years. I have been on dones for just over two years now. I'm glad I'm not alone in this but I do want to find a cure for us as this is a very bad side-effect to try to deal with as we try to get on with our lives. I do feel for everyone that has shared about their problem(s) and I understand how bad it gets. I HATE to sweat, I mean I HATE IT. I would rather be a drug addict than a sweat addict. And I can say that as I have been both.

I have been on done almost four years now. I was never a sweaty person before but since I started I have been suffering with daily unwanted sweating. It started with the worst night sweats. I would literally be stuck to my boyfriend in bed. It got so bad we got separate beds. I'm a dancer, this is how I make a living and it is so embarrassing when I completely break out into a full body -from head to toe- sweat that does not stop! I am interested in the methadone supplement listed above in the comments. I am going to ask my clinic on my next take out day.

If you ever get a really hott lap dance from a very hott stripper...remember, she might be a methadone patient - just like you!

sweating2death on February 07, 2012:

hey guys, its been almost 6 months since I last visited this site so I figured I'd check back in (kept this site in my favorites list on pc) and see how everybodies doing? Snorky THERE IS A PILL out there for the sweating problem-you just will have to convince your doctor that you have an overactive bladder (i.e., excessive urination & continue leaking urine like a leaky faucet after you pee). Your doctor may even refer you to a urologist but they can not disprove that you have this problem so no worries. Tell them that you had the problem years ago in the past & your old doctor prescribed you Toviaz 8 mg tablets (it comes in 4mg too but you can build a tolerence to this medication so get the 8 mg tablets even if you only have to take half at 1st). I 1st started taking the toviaz around 8 months ago after reading about oxybutynin (spelling may be wrong) working for some people ON THIS SITE, then I went to get the oxybutynins prescribed but medacaid would only pay for the toviaz (from what I understand they are pretty much the same thing-maybe just the toviaz is generic or something that works very similiarly). Eitherway, I would be so screwed right now like the rest of you if I didn't have the toviaz. On some days when I forget to take it, or when I don't take it until right before I walk out the door (lately it seems to take about an hour to kick in) and it hasn't kicked in yet I still find myself on the packed J train (nyc subway) sweating2death and extremely embarassed as everyone in the rail car is just staring at me while I drip like some kind of freak! But have no fear, I have been taking this medication for 8 whole months and now Im back to give you all my 8 month report. I initially wrote in telling you guys how great it was after my 1st day, then after a few months I wrote back in letting you guys know about the tolerence issue and how it wasn't working as good as it used to but nevertheless was still working. After 8 months I am checking back in to tell you all that this stuff is the real deal, and that's coming from a true methadone sweat freak like the rest of you! I am not cured-especially considering that the sweating is just a side effect of the toxic methadone, but the toviaz is something I have to take every single day like the methadone to manage. And it works very well. After 8 months, I did gain a tolerence to it and had to raise my dose. BUT, for the last 4 months I know that I can count on NOT sweating so long as I take my pills at least an hour before I take my methadone (basically, it takes an hour for the pills to kick in-sometimes I don't take them until after I start sweating and will still sweat for the following hour). And I will defenitely be dry if I do it just like that every day, and these pills are really great because they will last for the entire day! I take them at 11am and I can be out at 11 pm and be dry dry dry as can be-seems like Im even more dry as the day gos by as a matter of fact. And here's the kicker, im on 180 mgs!!! Now I know that for those of you on 100 or less these pills might even make you too dry so you will want to cut them in half-like your mouth will get really dry but as my tolerance went up I no longer expierance that side effect but you will for the first 3 months. my x is on 180 mgs of methadone too (we both got on it together about 2yrs ago & thought more was better like with heroin so we foolishly were like competing seeing who could go up faster) and she is always crying to me about the sweating and when I give her my pills she is amazed at how good they worked for her but then she didn't want to take them anymore because she claimed the cotton mouth was worse than the sweating (but that's not true-with cotton mouth your good with a drink in hand-when your sweating2death the only thing in your hand is a wet towel, & like I said I no longer expierence the dry mouth as my tolerance has gone up but the pills still work good albeit not as intensely good as in the begining but I like it better the way it is now anyway) but lately shes been asking me for the pills every time she sees me (I don't know why she don't just get them prescribed already?). now after reading every sngle post here at one time or another only never- give- up claims that he/she took oxybutynin for 6 months and they didn't work for her/he. I can tell you thuis for a fact, the toviaz is the same kind of med as the oxybutynin and it works better thananything i have tried after reading all of these post. i have a very high level of comprehension and I know what im talking about so when I read something like sick-and-tired-of-being-soaked's comment from 5 months ago saying that she took detrol la for overactive bladder and it didn't stop her sweating and shes on here crying about sweating asking for suggestions--yet my post about the toviaz is only a few in front of hers--it upsets me. It upsets me because shes gonna end up confusing people for 1, and 2 because there is a pill out there that I just suggested so she need not be crying begging for suggestions! There are so many different kinds of overactive bladder meds that's been on the market over the yrs, that is not to say that every single urinary incontinence med will work-just the ones with a particular chemical makeup that work in a particular way. I mean come on, do you think that all pain killers work in the same way? there is a huge difference between asprin and vicodan, and this person just completely ruled out toviaz (she must of read my post-she says she read them all) because she took a med called detrol la before for an overactive bladder & she still sweat. No offense lady, but your level of comprehension must be like in the zero range! this sweat problem is ruining your life, so you might want to get your facts straight b4 just ruling out what a fellow member with the same problem is telling you absolutely 100% worked for them! This is no half assed fix to the problem, it is the fix to the problem! As a matter of fact, I might as well write the pharm company that makes them and tell them that I have a new use for their pill so that maybe they will start becoming available in the methadone clinics one day! But as I was saying, I just started college 3 weeks ago (something im sure i wouldn't be doing if i never was on the methadone in the 1st place), and I was at school from 4pm to 9pm, and its now 1 10 aM, Ive been writing for about an hour now, and I am doing this because I know how bad this problem is for those of us that have suffered with it and I want you guys to know that you don't have to continue suffering like that--THATS THE ONLY REASON WHY I AM ON HERE TYPING RIGHT NOW WHEN I AM TIRED AND HAVE BETTER THINGS I COULD BE DOING, IF NOT SLEEPING! Now like I said, there is 1 person on this entire post 4months ago that says they took oxybutynin "FOR 6 months" FOR AN OVERACTIVE bLADDER and it didn't stop their sweating. HONESTLY, THAT to me actually sounds suspect and I hate to even think that somebody with this problem would ever do anthing to mislead us but why was she taking this med? was it because she read about it on here 6 months ago when people were stating about how it has worked for them & is that the reason why she took the oxybutynin was for the purpose of helping with the sweats? If so, why was her 1st post 4 months ago-why didn't she post 6 months prior to that when she supposofly 1st found this site like everyone else does when they 1st find it? also, if she was taking the oxybutynin for sweats (and if she didn't read about it on this web site I don't know where she could have ever gotten the idea because I know for a fact it wasn't on any other sites 10 months ago as I searched the entire web for solutions and the recommendations this site was my last resort)then why would she continue taking them for 6 whole entire months if they were not working? If anything, perhaps she was really taking it for just an overactive bladder & thus did not take it the way a person treating methadone sweats should? I know one thing is for certain though, she is the only person in over 2 years of post to ever discredit oxybutynin and she did

Sweating is so severe it is ruining my life!! I dread going out simply because I have to walk and any sort of activity brings it on. I can sit and read all day but if I have to get up to vacuum or anything which causes exertion is when it starts and once it starts it just keeps pouring and pouring. I feel no embarrassment at all. I'm so exasperated there is no room for embarrassment.

The worst is from my head. I recently got botox injections in the scalp and it has helped a bit.

I tried a drug Benztropine and by the 2nd day I thought I was going to loose my mind, called 911, went to the ER and was told that it was from the med.

The worst thing is for me is that I really didn't even have to go on that horrid methadone program at all. And now I'm stuck for life dripping wet and stuck on that terrible drug for the rest of my life.

I don't sweat at night at all. It's only when I'm moderately active.

I have though of suicide. I cannot go on living dripping wet!! It's 10 degrees outside and I'm dripping wet!! It's just insane.

Ironically it was only four weeks ago when I started being very itchy in my underarms.Looked in mirror and it was a rash causing the itching. Asked local pharmacist about it and he said it looked like a fungal rash (makes sense really as that area was always moist-same might be said for itching in the 'nether' region!)

Bought a tube of anti-fungal cream and after three applications per day for two days-rash (and itchiness) disappeared! This side-effect was the last straw which led me in search of and success with bipereden. Good luck !

Thankyou everyone for sharing your journeys with methadone. What a relief to find so many have the same unbearable sweating problems (thought I was the only one!)

I have been on methadone 25mg for the past five years for chronic back pain.Yes- it's a small dosage, but my doc won't increase the dose even though I have to take OTC painkillers nearly everyday.

I had an hour to spare on Tuesday before my doctors appointment and stumbled across this site. (Hadn't done any research for five years due to the fact that nothing seemed to work.)I had reached the point where I wanted to come off this insidious drug and try something else-sweating was the worst-summer or winter it looked like I'd just had a shower, esp wet hair!

I did my homework and decided that that day, I was going to ask him if I could go onto Biperiden 2-4mg per day.

Doc said yes-but starting on 2mg doses.

I am also on quite a bit of other medication and have my tablets done up in a weekly pack done by my pharmacist.

Doc appointment was in morning-went straight to pharmacy and had my first tablet at 10.00am that morning.

O M G-the stuff worked.I couldn't believe it and was so happy-was gonna get on here straight away to let you lovely people know that FINALLY, I'd found something that worked for me.Decided to leave it for a couple of days as didn't want to get anyone's (or my) hopes up.!!!

HAVEN'T HAD ANY SWEATS NOW FOR NEARLY 4 DAYS and am so glad to have found this site. I know everyone is different and what works for some may not work for others, hope my story can help some fellow-sufferers out there and thankyou to you all.

First off I'd like to start off by saying that I've been on methadone for over a year now for a very heavy oxy habit 200-300 mgs orally daily and no I'm not exaggerating. I am now on 120 mgs daily of methadone and have been completely clean. Since the very first day on methadone, I've already faced the fact that I will most likely be on it for the rest of my life.I also have the problem with sweating on methadone and keep my house at 65 degrees in the summer to try and help, but it doesn't do much good as I too am soaked when its below freezing outside and I'm merely walking across ac parking lot, it is embarrassing to go and get a hair cut and be so self conscc

I used to sweat a lot from an anxiety problem and then I found opiates, Oh it was such a relief my hands and feet and armpits would completely stop the profuse sweating. I had suffered for years and not just sweating, when I first tried opiates it was a godsend, but since I live in the united states the supposedly freest place on the planet I could not get opiates well other than on the steet. Those of you who live in countries where all drugs are sold over the counter allowing you a choice, you don't know how lucky you are. I have spent years in prison in the state of washington for possession of heroin, I am a totally non violent man I don't steal for my drugs, I worked long hours as an auto mechanic to pay for my habit. I would love to be on methadone, but there is not a methadone clinic within 60 miles. I often wonder if I could make it in another country where I am allowed to make my own choice of what I put into my body. sorry to change the subject here but I saw some where having sweating problems and thought wow !! I am just the opposite, the methodone stops me from a terrible sweating problem, as do most opiates.

This is for sweating to death. My boyfriend of 11 years was on methadone with me and his sex drive decreased extremely and it almost caused us to break up. He went to his doctor and the blood test showed that his testosterone levels were extremely low and yes it was a side effect of being on methadone. His doctor prescribed him a steroid that was in gel form that he would rub on his upper chest and upper arms. Our sex life was so much better after that and once he came off of methadone his testosterone levels went back to normal. He has been off of methadone for almost two years now and doing very well. I understand about not wanting to tell your doctor about the methadone and really you shouldn't have to because there are some young men out there with that same problem. Just mention to your doctor that you heard that there is a gel steroid that could help increase your testosterone and hell probably give it to you. Also be very careful not to let your girl touch the spot you put it on until its completely dry because if she gets pregnant or is pregnant it can cause birth defects in the fetus. And same goes for if you have kids don't hold them until your arms and chest have completely dried.

michele31 on October 12, 2011:

I have been on methadone since 2000 and it has been a life saver for me. But like all of you I too have the excessive sweating problem. Two years ago I was prescribed propantheline and It was amazing how fast it worked! I had immediate relief from sweating but had to deal with the dry mouth problem. I just sucked on hard candy a lot and that helped me. Now they stopped using the drug in the usa so now my doctor prescribed me ditropan (oxybutynin) and an alluminum chloride to wipe on my face before bedtime. It is called drysol and it takes a few days for it to block your sweat glands but with these two medicines combined I am able to work everyday without being embarrassed about the sweat dripping off my face. Don't be confused with the drysol sold at the stores, that is not the same. Drysol can only be prescribed by your doctor or dermatologist. Also be careful not to overmedicate your face and scalp with this medicine because it burns so bad and showering will not get it off! You just have to remember that its like the same kind of solvent as alcohol and it dries up fast so once it absorbs into your skin there is no way of releiving that burning feeling. I too quit my job as a waitress because it was too embarrassing to have to wipe the sweat from my face all of the time. But after my doctor prescribed me these medications I have been able to get another waitressing job and it has been great not having to be nervous thinking the people were staring at the sweat on my face. Also I was able to go back to college and Im halfway thru my credits to becoming a dental hygenist. If it wasn't for methadone I would be still prostituting myself and selling drugs. Everytime I tell someone that I have been on methadone for over ten years they say you don't look like the type and that pisses me off so bad! Stupid people think even if your on methadone you are still abusing drugs and you don't have a job, but that's the opposite of most of my friends on methadone. They have families and good jobs. In 2008I was off of methadone and I had a really bad relapse and I got back on methadone after a year of hell and within two weeks was back to my normal self and doing good again.

So if I have to be on methadone to be a good mother and to keep a good job then that's what im going to continue to do until I feel its a good time to try again to come off of methadone. And I also know what its like to be on methadone in a hot environment because it gets as high as 120 degrees here in Arizona! I hope some of you will try the two drugs I shared with you today because sometimes if the ditropan isn't working for you the combination of the drysol will help immensely!

Ive been on 100mg methadone for 2 years & the sde effects are driving me crazy! I sweat all the time, I have gained a ton of weight, I have NO sex drive, & Im constipated... I hate it! B ut I know methadone has saved my life- honestly I think Id be dead without it. Its kept me clean for 2 years... No way I could have done it otherwise.

I took oxybytnin for 6 months & I noticed no change in my sweating. Ive also taken cinnamon pills with no change at all. Im desperate to find a solution for sweating. I can handle the rest of the side effects but Im so tired of sweating all the time. I live in hot humid Florida... Its awful to feel so nasty all the time. I had to stop waiting tables b/c of it. Who wants a waitress who has sweat puring down her face?

sweating2death on September 11, 2011:

the excessive sweating returned-only not as bad as if I had took no pills. For the past couple of months or so the results have not chAnged so that is a good sign-every day that I take the 2 pills in the morning before I leave I can expect to sweat-but not nearly as bad as I did before I was on the pills-and like I said I no longer expierence the side effect of extreme dry mouth now that I have built up this tolerence. There has been one exception to the tolerence issue--one time I did not leave my house for like a week so I did not take any pills for a week, so when I finnaly did leave and take the pills they worked great again but by next day it was back to the normal routine I have been trying to explain here. Like I said, even though I have built up this tolerence these pills are still the best things out there from what I can see because I still sweat-albeit not as bad but still bad compared to a normal person, but when I leave I throw a clean dry towel around my neck and Im good as long as I don't dress heavily. For instance-tonight 9/10/11 in NYC I left my house with the towel around my neck but I didn't have to use it at all-I hardly broke any sweat. Yesterday was hot and I wore an army fatigue and I did sweat a bit but as long as I don't get caught in one of these situations without my towel or wash cloth im good. Now, I want to add that I took the vitadone AS PER INSTRUCTIONS for a full month & it did not do anything that it said it would do for me, but hey, I cant speak for the next man-I just hope that nobody is out there trying to exploit us by pushing snake oil on us for a profit. The vitadone did say it contained cinamon-but to suggest that cinnimon would help stop the sweats just sounds ridicolous to me. Now adhering to my duty of full disclosure, I must tell you all that I am on 180mgs of methadone and I don't start sweating a lot of times until I am in certain stores or underground in the hot subways-so the bladder medication might even work better for you than it does for me if your local & dose is slightly different than mine. I also want to add before logging off that I have not been able to have sex since I have been on the methadone-AND THIS PROBLEM ONLY STARTED SINCE I HAVE BEEN ON THE METHADONE. I recently got tested for low t and found out my testosorone levels are extremely low and I believe this is due to the methadone as well but I never was tested for that prior to being on the methadone.unfortunately I cant tell my doctor that I am on methadone because once a doctor knows you are on that medacation they discrimanate most of the time. Now I said that to say this-this shit is a very toxic substance and if any of you are expierencing other side effects as well due to this med please share. Like a lot of you above it has helped me turn my life around and I am in college now so I am kind of scared to stop taking it but like boris said it is toxic. I appreciate your input as well boris-it was very enlightening. if you have anything else to share please do. good luck everybody

this has got to be my 3rd post. I am the member who previously told you about the bladder medication-e.g.,I tried to get the previously mentioned Oxybutnin but Medacaid would not pay for that so I ended up getting another medication called Topiaz that does pretty much the same thing. I wrote in so exited on day 2 to tell everybody here how much it worked. Unfortunately, Ive built up a tolerence to the topiaz so it isn't working as effectively anymore. Don't get me wrong--I still take it every day that I leave my house (as opposed to sitting in front of the AC) & I noticed that I sweat probably 5 to 10 times worse when I don't take the medication-but as time went by as with most medications it doesn't work like it did for the first 2 weeks that I took it. Also, the side effect it produced (i.e., dry mouth) was terrible at first but now I hardly ever get the sensation-Again this I reason must be related to the tolerance factor. For the 1st week it worked great than it started to fall off some but not completely so my doctor increased my dose to 2 a day after i told him that I was building up a tolerance to it (NOTE-I have always told my doctor I am taking the medication for excessive urination & urinary leakage which is what the medication is made and primarely prescribed for) and I have been on 2 a day ever since. For the 1st week that I took 2 a day I again didn't sweat at all but eventually

I have been on Methadone for 7 years for chronic back pain The weird thing is Im amazed at the people that can take these high dosages and not meaning that in bad way I would get up to 4 -10mgpills and I was thinking I was taking too much I am down to just 1-2 pills a day and I still sweat like a horse. The reason I wanted to comment was I was born with a sweat gland disorder where my swaet glands are 3 times smaller than the avg person and I used to never sweat a drop I could play sports for hrs never a spot but now I feel embarassed to even go to work sometimes. I tried a few yrs back to quit taking OMG I thought I wanted to die after 2 wks of not even going to work I started back but I just wanted to add its not just the high dosage I don't always believe that can be the case now I did realize it did increase some after I started taking anitdepressants but I just sat hear over an hr taking notes of suggestions which I thank everyone for doing and I will try some things and I will post back if I find something works good luck to everyone and thank u for making me realize im not alone on August 29, 2011:

I am doing/was doing a research for EMCDDA.European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addicts.I found next:

People who are on other full opioid substitutes than methadone - had less or nothing than normal sweating.

-Why do we sweat so much on methadone, and those on "diamorphine" ,or, "diacethyl-morphine" or "morphine sulfate" - ARE NOT or much less.

Let's take a short look at methadone's general background:

Methadone, generic drug that is meant to be prescribed for heroin addicts or for pain management as a withdrawal/pain suspender.

SWEAT ITSELF is meant to bring TOXIC meterials out of our body.Trough the sweat ,ordinary human, brings up to 30% of EVERYTHING on surface.Due the toxicity of methadone and it's active ingredient - mixture of levo and dextro methadone { l,d methadone ratio 50:50 at 10mg } - racematic mixture of methadone is fully prepared to be absorbed in liver in it's three parts.Methadone is really easy "breaktrougher" , so he get's in to digestive tract fast and easy.Oral absorption is 90%,so in to 30min - every single molecule is absorbed - but real effect comes in to 2-4hrs.That moment is called "the peak".

- So, the REALLY HARD SWEATING is coming mostly from those who are on doses greater than 60-70mg.Than,sweating seems to be unbelievably hard to stand.

- NOTICE: Those who are on smaller dosages ,but still experiencing severe sweating - has so called "slow metabolism" or it's liver is doing "absorbing" and "transformation" of methadone on different { usually slower } method so the person/patient start to sweat really hard on small dosages.

I will post on 30th of August on hubpages a hub.

Sick and tired of being soaked on August 18, 2011:

Hi all, it's nice to know I'm not alone in searching for a solution to the severe sweating caused by methadone. First off, I am a chronic pain patient. I take methadone for pain management. I take 20mg in the morning, and 20mg at bedtime. I also take 5mg of Percocet three times a day for breakthrough pain. To toss even more "monkeywrenches" into the mix, I also take 16mg of tizanidine and 1mg of clonazepam at bedtime to help with muscle tension, muscle spasms, and regulation of my sleep cycle. Yep, I also suffer from chronic fatigue, not just chronic pain. Obviously, the methadone doesn't help with that... So, I take 30mg of Adderall twice daily to help with the severe chronic fatigue. (Sorry that this is so long, but I wanted to give a full backstory, as well as list the meds I have to take.)

I've been on the methadone, tizanidine and clonazepam since 2003, Percocet since 2001, and have only been taking the Adderall since 2009, before that, I had been on Ritalin since 2005. All of these meds are at their bare-bones dosages that still allow me to "sort-of" function, and are managed by pain management specialists, rheumatologists, OB/Gyns, etc.

I'm 33 years old, I'm slim and fit, (5'1", 110lbs, sz.0/2), I exercise daily, (walking, yoga, tai chi) I eat a very healthy diet, I drink massive amounts of water, basically, I take very good care of myself.

But, as long as I've been taking methadone, I have been sweating so profusely, and often without any physical exertion, that I find myself surprised I'm not dehydrated, and that I have anything left to pass as urine! I'd love to go off of the methadone, heck, I'd love to go off of all of the meds I take, but that isn't an option. My pain is too severe. But I'm getting to a point where I can no longer tolerate the sweats. It may be all in my head, but I think they're getting worse. It has only been in the last few months (this summer) that I've noticed I'm sweating even more, and more often, and even worse, despite the fact that I use prescription-strength antiperspirant, and a deodorant spray I can use all over my body, I've found that along with sweating enough to fill a plastic kiddie pool every day, the odor-producing sweat gland areas (i.e., underarms, crotch, feet..) have kicked into high gear with the production of odor that goes hand in hand with sweating. Basicially, even with superstrong antiperspirant, body deodorant, perfume, showering at least twice daily, the glands under my arms and between my legs are working even harder to produce a gym locker "stank" worthy of an entire sports team, not one petite woman. I sweat like this every single day, whether I exercise or not. When I go for walks, have yoga and tai chi class, and practice at home, it is even worse. I try to always wear natural fibers, even with my workout clothes, but it isn't always possible. I've found that with this even higher-gear of extreme sweating, and the amped up "reek" that accompanies it, is the extreme difficulty to get the "super-sweat" odor out of my clothes. The underarms and crotches, even with natural fibers, hold that smell like nothing I could've imagined. It's so embarrassing! I've always been a "girly-girl", and my appearance is important to me. If I can't "feel" good, I want to at least "look" and "smell" good! Now, I feel like even that is being taken away from me!

I'm going to ask my docs about the Vitadone supplement, and am heading to the store to pick up some cinnamon extract pills. I've been on and off of Detrol LA for overactive bladder, and never noticed that it helped to alleviate my excessive sweating.

I just don't know what to do! I change my sheets every day, I have to wash all of my clothes at least three times to get the sweat stink out of them. I have a huge collection of golf towels, since they clip onto stuff, they're awesome for taking with you everywhere to deal with being soaked. I shower with the coolest water I can stand (I can't go too cool, as it causes pain flares and muscles tension, the spasms) at least twice a day. I use anti-dandruff shampoo because the sweating has caused dandruff to be a problem. I stand in front of a fan while I blow dry my hair, but even still, I begin sweating again as soon as I'm out of the shower. Heck, for all I know, I could be sweating while I'm showering! But since it's getting worse, I am at a loss! I am open to any and all suggestions. I have read the entire thread, and I figure, if anyone out there might have ideas as to WHY my already excessive sweating has suddenly kicked it up a notch, and might have tips for coping with all of this, it would be y'all, my fellow methadone users, and sufferers of the super-sweats.

Thanks for listening to my mega-long, rambling rant. I tend to do that when I'm nervous, and telling complete strangers that you are sweating, and stinking even more than "normal" for a methadone patient, is bound to make anyone nervous! Yep, I'm sweating from being nervous too. But please, any and all serious suggestions, ideas, etc., would be so very appreciated!

Thanks to you all, and if I find anything else, I'll be sure to post it here! Take care...

It was one of the grossest display of ignorance I have ever seen. I truly hope she looks at these posts again and takes the advice to learn about Methadone before damning it. I never held a job, finished a lease, paid my bills, kept a girl, etc when I was using but since starting Methadone have held the same job for the last 5 years, finished every lease, paid every bill, and been married for 3 1/2 years. It saved and changed my life. What a foolish woman. Anyway, I'm sooo tired of being a human waterfall, so I'm going to talk to my doc about the bladder meds and will get back. Thanks for the advice.

Traci on July 09, 2011:

A friend of mine and I were discussing our problems one morning waiting in line at the clinic. She said she'd done some research on vitadone, but had decided to try cinnamon first. I've recently started taking a cinnamon supplemant myself - 2 1000mg pills a day - and I feel MUCH better. I live in Alabama so it is VERY humid here, but like everyone else, I was sweating by walking 10 feet (in the shade) to sit on a swing! I'm not talking just little bits of sweat either...I'm talking my ENTIRE body would be SOAKED! It did take about three weeks for the cinnamon to begin helping, but now I can go to the outside farmer's market without looking like I just hosed myself down.

On another note, to "concerned mom," your kids just sound LAZY! Whether they're on methadone or anything else, they'd just be lazy! Methadone does of course have many side effects, but before I began taking it, if I didn't have my oxycontin (and I'm talking 10 - 12 80mg pills a day), I just wanted to lay around...or look for the pills. I never stole anything or really lied to the people I cared about, but I was a mess! I was constantly calling into work bc I was ALWAYS detoxing! It was terrible and it ruined my life. Once I began taking the methadone, after a few weeks, I felt like I was normal again...maybe not to how I used to be before drugs, but definitely close! I'm now able to hold down a job and ALL of my relationships are better...because I care about things other than finding pills! I do know several people at the clinic that are NOT trying to do better, but are only using it to stay also mixing it with things like xanax and klonopin...and they are all lazy. Maybe your daughter and her husband are only using it to supplement their high and taking something like that with it. If so, then I definitley do feel sorry for their baby.

Back to why we're all here...the pills that some people are using that they're getting from their urologists sound like they're helping too, but before you try that and have problems peeing, try the cinnamon first! Like I said, it will take a few weeks to see a difference, but I feel like a new (and DRY) person!

molly I hear what your saying about posting your results on the first night but I am so exited I just cant help myself! Well my fellow meth sweaters, I'm back, and I told you I would start working on a solution and get back to you with my findings. I want to say I FOUND A CURE!!! But I would be taking too much credit if I said that because I wouldn't have been able to do it if I didn't carfully read and scrutinize every one of these post and work with what appeared (rightfully so) to be the best advice out there. Some of the above post refer to an incontinence drug (i.e., for people who have over-active bladders or in my case-a leaky faucet lol) called oxybutynin that takes away the terrible sweating. After reading that, I figured I would have no problem getting it because I already had a appt with a urologist because I also have a problem leaking urine after I urinate. I told him oxybutynin worked in the past (i was lieing) and so he wrote me a script for it. However, come to find out, medacaid does not pay for oxybutynin & it cost over $100 per bottle so the pharmicist called the doc and they switched the prescription to a similar new drug called Toviaz (fesoterodine fumarate extended release tablets) and it does take the sweating away (thank God) and has the same side effects described by the people taking oxybutynin (e.g., dry mouth-havnt been able to pee). but my face has never been dryer. I feel like I look so much better and have so much more confidence already!!! today was like 80 something degerees and I havnt sweat a drop!!!! So folks, that's stop writing in saying "I wish there was a Pill" because there is. Like someone said in another post, Ill bet any of these types of pills will do the trick. As you read with the vitadone/nutridone, the results vary. Everybody who has taken oxybutynin or the like has been cured, without a single exception.

Here's an update on the vitadone: the first week I was super excited and I almost posted the first night because I was able to take a shower and even blow dry my hair without....guesss....sweating! It was my first time in about 6 months and I couldn't believe it. I didn't want to get everyones hopes up first until I knew for sure that it was working. As time has gone on I feel as though its almost back to the way it was. I just can't tell any more. I was just in TX where the humidity is awful and so was my issue. It was like I wasn't taking anything at all. I almost decided to stop the vitadone but I realized that it has killed my sweet tooth so I will continue. I almost feel like I've built up a tolerance to it so I up'd my dose to the 3 a day it recommends, I started that a week ago. I can't tell if there is a difference yet. I wanna say that yes it has lightened but I still sweat a lot. It hasn't lightened as much as it did when I first started taking it, I almost felt cured back then. I will continue until the bottle is gone then I will update you again. It's starting to get really hot and humid where I live so we will see if it measures up. I didn't expect a miracle but I guess I expected a little more than what I have seen so far. Other people might have different outcomes so I wouldn't say don't try it, it's def worth giving it a go.

I reduced more or less straight away, and stuck to it. I did feel a bit rough for about a week, but now I am feeling much better than I did. And I still haven't touched any illicit opiates for two years. I'm going down to 20ml, I will come back then.

Before I start i just want to say, concerned mother... Lay off the crank you flipping wack job. My mouth was on the floor from the first line of that raving lunatics post until it FINALLY CAME TO AN END... And I thank god for that

Thank you so much everyone else for sharing these experiences. I really thought I was the only one soaking wet with ANY type of activity. I suffer from chronic neuropathic back pain. I have been on methadone for about a year , and have had my dose upped to 80mg a day. The pain is greatly reduced to a point where I can actually live my life to a degree. I've been on other pain meds that didn't give much relief.

Now that my pain is under control a few months ago I decided I would try to work again (guess that blows your disrespectful post right up in your face huh nutzo mom?)

Anyway this is when I started noticing the profuse sweating. There is no way I can stop meth as the pain is unbearable. Even with methadone and morphine I still have burning pain in my back.

I work as a pc tech... A sweaty dripping wet, just sprayed with a fire hose , pc tech. The sweat dripping off my face is a serious problem if it gets inside electronics. My sweating is from head, back, and chest , and it's not the smelly kind of armpit sweat. Lucky for me I can read through all the advice here and hopefully find something that works for me. I thank you all for that.

Methadone saved my life from pain and allowed me to rejoin society to a point. Now that I'm realizing the sweat problem with increased activity were heading backwards a bit

And a serious thanks to everyone else for sharing their expierences & insight. I have been on the done for 9 months now, from Sept.2010 to today's date May 21st. I sweat a lot during the winter but it was bearable then. Now that its getting warmer I already see that Im in for a HELL of a summer! Its only in the 60's and all I do is leave to go to the clinic via. the subway & come straight home to sit in front of the Ac all day. I sweat like crazy on the way to & from the clinic & I know what your saying when your talking about people looking at you. I also have had no interest in sex since taking the drug & I know my wife is getting fed up with that, but that I will live with to stay clean. I don't know about living with this sweat? The best ideas I got from this is stocking up on towels to wear around my neck when i leave, wearing talcon powder & pretend I got bladder problem so I can get prescribed oxybutynin. Another sight mentioned gatorade? oh yes, & the suplement may or may not work(probably varies from person to person-just like this side effect itself)? Well my sick friends, we did bring this on ourselves so im not gonna blame the doctors who are just trying to help us, or the pharm. companies. Ive lived in very conserative areas where there were no clinics & the only program for the people who have addiction problems is incarceration, & you can believe me the jails and prisons are filled with people who have addiction problems with no way of treating it like we have. most of us brought this on ourselves when we first piked up the junk. Good luck to everybody. will check back in upon trying these pills or supplements.

Reply to skech...I can remember around 5 years ago there was a big drought of heroin in the UK that lasted for months, and methadone liquid was being peddled to the addicts on the street at £20 for 20mls! And it was probably being watered down too.

Don't buy methadone off anybody on the streets, after all they are taking advantage of you seeing they got the meth for NOTHING.. I knew someone who went into a coma and died after drinking 40mls not knowing it was methadone in concentrated form 10mg/1ml, because it looked the same. He has been dead now for 12 years.

If you think you have a heroin problem and you are falling ill, get help. Ask your GP about Subutex and use this chance to get off it easily.

If you are getting peer pressure or are thinking about taking Methadone for recreational use, PLEASE DON'T. Methadone and Subutex dosent give you a 'buzz' like they say. You can end up addicted to it, falling seriosly ill, or overdosing and dying, even just taking 15 mls can easily kill you if you haven't taken it before.

Yeah, heroin is a great buzz first of all, nodding off etc but pretty soon after using it a few times that buzz goes and you find yourself using just to function normally at work etc and by then you will be under the illusion that the gear isn't as strong as it was..but what is really happening when you are throwing up is your body getting used to the intake, and you will need to take more and more to stay straight. The next step is injecting, to get that old rush back..but by that time you will have kissed your old life, your family and all your posessions goodbye. Not that you will care, because waking up every day ill only makes you think about one thing. Scoring some gear. Keep WELL away from those who offer it to you and never try it.

Save opiates for when you are old and on your deathbed in hospital. That is where it is most useful - having a pain free morphine assisted death. And that is it.

If you like your drugs, stick to the skunk. You will be a lot happier and healthier in the long run (apart from the damage smoking does) You will still have a life, unlike our addict 'mates' who would only want you in their sinking boat with them thrashing in the water to help keep them afloat for a while longer.

Opiates are produced naturally in the body. Once you start replacing it with heroin or methadone you will end up needing it probably for the rest of your life, because the withdrawals are far too horrendous. Stay healthy - take advice from somebody who knows.

SWEATY STEVE on May 02, 2011:

skech ...let me get this right - you are being perscribed 65 mgs METHADONE for oxy addiction???? Your GP should be struck off.

You are now in a much deeper hole than you were. It's no wonder you now feel 'fine' - 65mgs would keep an injecting heroin user straight! You should be on no more than 4mg Subutex for an oxy 'problem'

yeah you have done with the oxy - cos ur GP has given you something MUCH more powerful. He/She has totally messed u up. You will find this out when its time to come off it, you will be writhing in TOTAL AGONY FOR WEEKS.

Once methadone builds up in the body you will start to have BIG problems socializing, having relationships, having sex, working, family, cant go out, sweating, lethargic, the list goes on. Liquid methadone is absolute SHIT and the methadone 5mg tablets ARE different, contary to what they will tell you.

These bastard opiate peddling GP's are worse than any drug dealers on the street. And that is a fact.

I just wanna thank everyone for coming on here and sharing their feelings and experiences. I stumbled upon this site but unlike "concerned mom" I not only belong here but at least one thing that each one of you has said touched me straight to my heart. I can definitely relate. I've been on done for almost 2 years now and have been experiencing the sweating thing since last summer. I've been on methadone before many years ago but I never experienced what's been happening to me this time. It dawned on me today why, I was never on it as long as I have been this time. Usually I would go on it for a few months then end up in some place where they wouldn't let me have it and forced me to detox. Those days are over though. I had no idea that the sweating thing would have anything to do with the done and I'm an old hat at this kinda stuff. Last summer I quit smoking and I gained some weight because of it (topped by the overwhelming urges to stuff my face in a vat of ice cream and eat my way out) Not a whole lot of weight but I gained enough to make a difference in my life. I started having facial sweating not to long after that and I have also developed dandruff due to the profuse amount of sweating. I assumed that it was because of the weight gain, and yes I have seen people my size out in the sun without any sweating but you know how addicts are, we can rationalize anything. I just assumed that it was because my body wasn't used to having this much weight on it and that eventually I either would lose the weight and be fine or my body would adjust and it would go away. It's crazy! I don't sweat anywhere else on my body BUT my face and my head & until yesterday, when I came to this website, I thought that I was one of very few and that it was ALL due to my weight gain. I really had no idea that methadone would have anything to do with that. So again, thank you. Without you all coming on here I would still feel alone in this, and that's never a good feeling.

I even called my Dermatologist at one point and asked her what I should do and you know what this snatch told me to do....put deoderant on my face! I mean really lady? Are your freaking kidding me? Needless to say I no longer see her.

Ok so now down to the nitty gritty stuff. How I stumbled across this site is that my clinic is now offering Vitadone and I was researching it when this website came up. I have actually read a lot of really good reviews about the stuff and not just the few from this site, so I decided to give it a go. I called my counselor this morning and asked if I could pick up a bottle today. She said yes so I rushed down there. I immediately started taking them. I'm gonna try them out for 30 days then come back on here and tell everyone if it made any difference at all. From what I have been reading it doesn't look like there are a lot of options out there for us except quitting, putting deoderant on our faces (or whole bodies) or moving to Alaska. I promise that I will update you. I might even sneak in a little comment sooner if I notice anything before the month is up.

By the way Amanda with the cinnamon, it has cinnamon as one of the ingredients, a small amount but maybe your on to something, good luck with that, let us know, will ya?

Clammy Clive on April 27, 2011:

Cinnamon eh? Do let us know how u get on with them Amanda, I am sure there are a lot of ppl who need answers that our doctors can't give us..

I found out I could easily cut my methadone intake BY HALF and I am sweating a lot less now, I am now taking 35ml a day. I still feel tired and doing any sort of physical activity still makes my skin go all hot, but the sweating seems to have eased off since I cut down (I haven't told them yet I will when I'm ready.. I don't want them worrying about me being drug free and them out of a nice cushy job now do we!)

I think we are taking far too much, our poor bodies are trying to process all the chemicals by sweating it out. If your sweating is bad, get your amount down to 30ml, then ask to switch over to subutex (DO NOT TAKE THEIR NO FOR AN ANSWER)

Tip - Don't use heroin on top, if you are taking methadone you only think you need to take it.. combining heroin with methadone can cause opiate level increases and will only lead to more hot flushes and sweating..

Advice - If you are taking Methaone and you stopped the heroin like me and still suffer from terrible sweating, try cutting down your dose by HALF straight away, and stick to it. You shouldn't feel any side effects although psycologically you may feel you haven't taken enough, this can trigger precipitated withdrawal and restlesness, but with a positive frame of mind you will have no problems cutting down.

If you are under supervised consumption, TELL THE DOCTOR TO CUT DOWN YOUR DOSE. Supervised consumption is how they get you even more addicted to THEIR opiates by making you take large amounts of it every day in front of the pharmacist and shop customers (WHICH IS VERY EMBARRASSING)

Remember, Less is good. I guarantee you wont fall ill, instead I am sure you will feel a lot better. If not, well all I can say is we are all going to have to come off this junk one day, might as well try today and see how you get on.

Amanda on April 18, 2011:

I have a cure! I've been using methadone too and had the sweating issue. I have been told by a lot of people that simply taking cinnamon capsules or cinnamon extract will stop your sweating. I just bought a bottle of 100 for 7 dollars. I'm going to try it out today! But I've heard it works wonders ad is relatively cheap!

snorky on April 13, 2011:

There is really no reason for me to make any comments, being I'm just like all the rest of you w/ this severe sweating. I'm just glad to see that I'm not alone. That crazy clinic just blows it off. We really are nothing but low lifes criminals in their mind. They really don't give a rip if we would sweat ourselves to death!

I tried cogenten and it worked, however the side effects I found to be just terrible, worse than the sweating. I felt confused, out of my mind as I know it. My perceptions of things were foreign to me and I went to the ER.

I HAD to stop the cogenten, the fear I experience w/ it was not worth it. It did help the sweating. I always said that if I could find a way to stop this nightmare I'd do anything. I changed my mind about that due to what that cogentin did to me.

Guinea Pigg on April 07, 2011:

I have been prescribed 70mls methadone a day for about 3 yrs now, which was steadily increased from 30mgs because I was (and still am)suffering with chronic sweating and I thought I needed more. To say Methadone has totally ruined my life is an understatement. I have reduced myself down to 40/50mgs but I am still sweating, even in the freezing cold. I intend to reduce further and transfer over to Subutex.

If you are taking methadone - PLEASE STOP. These evil doctors don't care about your health at all and they are literally messing with your life. They are treating us like guinea pigs. It feels like a long sweaty drawn-out clammy withdrawal. I have no social life any more. I have no sex life. I have no job. I have no confidence in myself anymore. I sweat all the time and have to sit in front of a fan every day. I had NO fillings in my mouth before I started taking this rubbish, now my teeth are crumbling away. And now because my skin is hot all the time pouring with sweat I HAVE DEVELOPED PSORAISIS! It first started as a little patch on my elbow and a small patch on my ankle, now it is spreading all over my arms, legs, knees and back, which has taken away what little self respect I had left. I feel like a social outcast because I cant go out because of the sweating and I cant wear t-shirts anymore because of the sweating and the scarring on my arms. I used to be a healthy happy boy before I was prescribed this shit. I even had a better social/life even when I was addicted to heroin! I have stopped taking heroin for over a year now, mainly because I cant afford a habit and the script I get is free. I told my doctor about my problems/side effects I am getting and you know what? He said sweating is NOT a side effect of Methadone! And this idiot is a GP, he is perscribing this rubbish to everyone that comes through his door begging for help.

I am going to reduce further and get off this crap. It dosent help you, because once u build the methadone up in your body THATS when all the shit starts. Oh and the sugar cravings are out of control, I can't stop drinking Lucozade.

It feels like these drug manufacturers didn't want us feeling good while on this stuff, I can imagine them saying " take this out, take that out, we don't want them happy and content like on real opiates, do we? Yes..we will take away the SEVERE withdrawals but we will make them so miserable and give them feelings of despair so they will never be able to get off it, and then we make loads of money through the NHS!

I know it is the Methadone that has caused all this, and reading everyone else's posts here I now know I am not alone.

These doctors and the people involved in distribution/manufacture/selling of this drug are no better than a dirty drug dealer on the street, in fact they are a lot worse.

The best advice I can give you is...

If you are an addict and need help, get prescribed Subutex and stop.

If you are just starting to take methadone, ask your GP to change it to Subutex.

If you are sweating and feel out of breath all the time like me, you need to reduce yourself to 30mgs a day, then tell them you want to swap to Subutex. Do not take NO for an answer.

For all the misery they have caused me, they deserve to be sued, but I doubt I have a leg to stand on if it went to court!

I would be interested to hear anyone else with the same problems as me because my idiot GP seems to think I am the only one who is sweating on methadone.

I have written to the GMC about my doctor refusing to change me over to tablet form but I got no reply..

They problably threw my letter in the bin.

"What's that letter?"

"Just another junky."

and hey i just wanna point out...CLONIDINE is a bllod pressure stops your heart from beating so much and slows your heart which would make u stop sweating- if u were sweating from withdrawl, however, this drug does NOT work for methadone sweat. In fact at my clinic ppl take clonidine to get a nodd in the morning and i cant beleive i heard them say it was CLONIDINE they were nodding off of...NOT COOL...80 mls is max doesage? i thought 120 was max everywhere. i know ppl that are on as much as 200mgs of methadone..crazy

nik.toronto on April 04, 2011: buddy gave me these little blue pills called "oxybutynin"...u ned to drink lots of water cuz it will dry your shit up...but if u drink lots of water with this drug it reduces the sweat those of you desperate for something good and that works...try the vitadone its made for methadone users...helps u shit and stuff too...and if that doesn't help the sweats try oxybutynin ( i think that's how its spelt) and that should help you a lot...i was able to work really well on it to..i find that before when i would work i would sweat right off the bat just from walking in the doors and then cuz im wet from sweat u get what feels like the 'chills' which reminds u off withdrawl, so some ppl might think they are actualy going thru w/d, i thought i was at first , but its just meth sweating that's the problem...get the works really good...and if ur still taking other pain killers or someone u know is taking pain killers and they have bad sweating too, the oxybutynin will help them too...i started taking it at first when i was still on the oxys and i was taking 12 80s a helpd a lot...and its helping a lot now...ciao peeps

I have been on meth for about 4 years and i was on a max dose of 80 ml , ive now managed to reduce to 30 ml and my sweats are even worse than they ever were. I thought as i reduced the sweats would get less. It's embarrassing, esp as all my friends are non drug users now and some don't know im on meth , arghhhh , its so frustrating, i got a roll on on prescription and it wasn't great. Im thinking of asking for the botox injections, would we get these on the nhs since its not for cosmetic purposes?

Maggie on March 28, 2011:

OMG! So grateful to see that I am not alone in my sweat-induced madness. My dose is currently 105 mgs & I'm slowly decreasing from maxing out at 120 mgs. I'm 37 & have been on methadone for 4.5 yrs. I'm newly engaged with no kids and would like to have a baby after I get married in May 2012. I feel that for me the best choice is to come off of the meds before trying for a baby so I am taking it slow & steady. I am also waiting to look at wedding dresses until I am further decreased in the hopes that the sweating gets better. Shop staff & owners don't want me even looking at dresses when I'm sweating, much less trying them on & potentially ruining them. I am so sick of the early menopause jokes & having to say "oh I just finished working out" to strangers & aquaintances alike. Anyone who says it's not a big deal has never experienced how uncomfortable & embarassing it is. I have to plan out my day & pack my purse knowing that any activity will start me sweating. Luckily for me, the sweating is not bad when I'm relaxing or sleeping but even moderate physical activity triggers it. I can totally relate to the last post from Sandy about a shower making me sweat & then again when I do my hair. I miss being a girly-girl, makeup & hair is just not fun when you are covered in sweat! I refuse to give in & cut my hair even though I know I would be more comfortable. I just wear it up A lot! And it's not just underarm sweating, I get soaked everywhere, even my arms & legs sweat, everywhere! I cant remember life before sweat, I want it back!

Sandy on March 18, 2011:

Thank God I found this site. I was put on Methadone several months ago for RSD. I thought I was going crazy. Living in Ohio the weather always changes. Winter wasn't so bad but I noticed when I would even try to do the smallest task the sweating would start. Now that spring is here the sweating is horrible, I'm trying to decide what's worse. Its so embarrassing. I cant shower without sweating. NO reason to do my hair, just standing there doing it makes my hair wet again. Are there other pain meds that equal the relief that Methadone dones without the sweating? Please let me know.

Hope on March 15, 2011:

I too suffer from gross, dripping wet sweat, side effect of pain meds (avg. 140 mg. daily) taken for chronic pain. Due to a bladder problem, my Dr. put me on a drug called Detrol LA (I take 1-4mg. capsule daily). It didn't help much with my problem, but what a surprise, it significantly reduced my sweating! I don't have to stand in front of a fan to get dressed anymore. It didn't eliminate it, but thank God it is better. I have to be doing physical activity before I start dripping now.

I hope my experience can help someone out there. Anyone who considers taking this med. be aware you must drink a lot of water while on it, and it will make constipation worse. I use a generic form of Miralax daily (polyethylene glycol 3350) which is available at WalMart and all major pharmacy chains (WalMart is cheapest). My Dr. says you can use as much of this product as you need and you won't get dependent on it.

FYI - Anyone who may be taking anti-depressant drugs should know that most of these drugs list sweating as a side effect, some are much worse than others. Posted 3/15/11

I am glad there are others out there who have this same problem as me. I HATE it :( .. I'm an opiate addict so I was put on methadone a while ago and it saved my life. I was taking 80mgs a day but I didn't like the pouring sweat and thought that I needed to up my dose to get rid of it.. so they uped it to 90mgs and you know what? It made me pour sweat even more.. it's soo anooying, busing to my pharmacy.. and even if its -20 out on the way there and back I'll be pouring sweat, in the winter!! :( .. I don't know what to do anymore it's soo annoying and I feel so gross in front of ppl. Tomorrow they are lowering my dose to 85mgs and I'm gonna see if it helps with the pouring sweat, and it's not just my face to it's my whole body.. kinda reminds me of my withdrawal days.. so uncomfortable. I really hope lowering my dose helps. Has anyone else ever sweat less from lowering there dose??

concerned mum,

I realize that you are upset about your childs addiction. Your long rambling post is in the wrong environment. MANY of us take methadone for chronic pain, like me for instance. I have a terrible side effect from this. Iam trying to find a solution and really don't appreciate someone going off on a med that helps me function with less pain.

Ok concerned mom.Everything you wrote is right.FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE! Only. I ve been on methadone for 8 months and I have 4 friends that got on it at the same time and we're all doing so well.It saved our lives. And yes I stopped opiates many times by myself for many months at a time but after a while, your endorphine levels don't get back to normal right away so methadone comes in as a good help. I used to be the one saying the same things you said: makes people lazy, bla bla bla excuses this, excuses that. The only thing is I hope you don't think that you are right and everybody else is wrong because your's is just an opinion. If you're smart enough you will understand what I mean.

Concerned Mum on January 28, 2011:

I am a mother and have a child who is on Methadone, and their partner is on Methadone and they now have a child. Seeing a baby going through drug withdrawals because of two peoples selfish choices is very unfair, its unfair that the medical staff tell Methadone users its safe on babies, this is a load of lies. Any decent mother knows that smoking, drinking while pregnant, eating spicy food effects the baby so why would Methadone be okay! Over the past 5 years I would say that at times it's like I have been living someone's life or in hell. It really confuses me that people make excuses about drugs, it doesn't matter what drug you are taking it's bad for you, because geez I am sure if it was okay the rest of us would be doing it to!!. Methadone is not the answer its just a bandage for a bigger problem. Until you face the demons on your own it will never be the same how will you be able to cope with anything in life. Having excuses and having people okay your addiction is not right, comparing methadone usage to people that have diseases that require medication that they never put on themselves is wrong. If you look at the bigger picture you will realize that someone is making money out of you again whether its heroin, dope or methadone. Why can an addict by choice receive discounted medication to those with cancers or diseases that are rare? Why are governments willing to put money into drug clinics but not feed or home the homeless or sick that don't have drug problems. Have you ever thought it could be that they are not telling you the truth as methadone is not that easier to get off and they will continue making money from it, if everyone opened their eyes a bit you would see that methadone is not the answer, it's an easy way out and guess what if we homed the homeless and gave them homes & fed them they won't be making money they would actually be spending it and fixing a problem. I am not denying the fact you may have a problem but why did that problem begin in the beginning why make excuses to get off it don't you think your life is worth living? Is the problem that you can't face the pain of getting off the drugs on your own (cold turkey) don't you think that doing it on our own and knowing you have done something for yourself is a much better feeling than relying on medication or others. So what if it's going to be hell for a yr or 2 surely it can't be any worse than where you came from. Can stealing, having no job, showing disrespect to others and yourself or lying and living with this each day be any better. Methadone from what I have seen (I know 3 people) has not made these people stronger its made them tired, helpless, insecure, lazy, without jobs and loads of excuses. They all have lost their self respect and respect to others there's always an excuse and a reason why they can't do something. The reality is that you lose your sole and until you find it you are lost. When was the last time you really felt normal do you honestly believe Methadone does that for you and will keep you going for every. When was the last time you looked in the mirror and felt happy to be you, this doesn't come when your on drugs or medication. If you keep telling yourself that you can't do it without methadone you subconscious will start to believing it, many sporting people tell themselves they can win feeding this into their subconscious each day their conscious mind will do the same and they win. Positive reinforcement, so maybe think about that next time you think you can't do as I think you can but it will only happen if you want it to. I am not saying life doesn't have ups and downs everyone's does and that's how you learn and become a better person, but denying that you have a problem or thinking more drugs and medication is the answer will not work. Surely it might make you feel better for awhile but it won't in the long run. I am really sick to death of hearing the medical field say it's okay its not. The power of anyone getting off any drug is in themselves and I only wish you all the very best but please take a look at the bigger picture not the small moment or space your living, look at what it's doing to your bodies, families , work and most importantly your brain. Set good examples to others with addiction problems(as that's what methadone is) and don't make excuses it gets you nowhere. I look at my life and think geez what could I have done differently to help our child for them not to go down this horrible life they are living, but it's all about choices and we all have them but just remember your choices generally will impact someone else's life around you and they also have to put up with it. All the best and take care...

However, I sweat heavily that people look at me wherever I go, especially because of my very fine hair which gets socked in no time. I am overweight and this might be the reason for my sweating, but I see chubby people all the time that they do not sweat like I do. I sweat after 10 minutes of having a cold shower. I think sweating is healthy because the body tends to get rid of all the toxins inside, and it reduces the temperature of the body which is great. People who do not sweat at all may suffer from high blood pressure. But excessive sweating is undesirable it can ruin one's life. This is why I try to do everything to reduce sweating. This article is pretty much helpful. For me, I am keen on having cold showers, drinking less caffeine (or eliminate it altogether if I can), eating right, exercising, drinking plenty of water, eating cucumber!, and what I found to be magical is talcum powder just like the post said. I apply talcum powder to sweaty areas, even my head. and it is effective in not making me sweat for over 3 days, but the problem is that after searching through the internet I have found that talcum powder may cause cancer especially if used near the genital area, I cannot confirm this but I'd better be careful. I believe if body temperature is kept cool, then the amount of sweat might be reduces. Also, drinking plenty of water and getting rid of it regularly might help. It is a big issue and a lot of us suffer from it, but each one of you should know that you are not the only one with this issue out there, life your life and be happy. Do not care about people staring.

I am a severe sweater, way way over the top. Sweating has ruined my life. I only sweat from my head and face(it's difficult to estimate, due to the fact it is just so much) I know it's not under the arms or anywhere other from my neck up. I think it comes all from my scalp, but I cannot precisely say, there is just far too much of it to tell.

I have no night sweats. I only sweat when I'm active and I don't mean overly active. I can sit on a chair all day reading and I don't sweat a drop, however, if I get up to change the sheets or vacuum,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I'm dripping wet. When I walk to the subway, walk down the steps and it can well be below 0, when I sit down on the train it starts and I drip and I drip and I drip, the dripping is endless, ENDLESS. So, by that time my under garments are damp to wet. NEED I SAY MORE?

Yes I do, a most important factor, I'm on methadone 50mgs. not too high. I was on 90mg.'s and there was no difference.

I have an answer!! I am on methadone, and I, like all of you, am a MAD sweater. It is terrible. Hair is soaked, back and face and chest, everything!! The only thing that ever worked for me (and my new meth doctor won't prescribe it) is called , ironically, oxybutynin. It is for bladder control, and it makes your body very dry, even , for example, your vagina, your mouth, everything. I was prescribed 5mg. I had to take two pills, which was not recommended, so 10 mg. and then finally, miraculously, there was NO sweat. NONE. GONE. But it took me about 10 minutes to go pee,(especially bad when you want to leave your urine sample) but hey, just dont' take it those mornings. It actually works, but the trick is, getting your doc to agree to it. It works.

Stafford on August 04, 2010:

I also sweat like a mad hatter. I throw a towel over my shoulder and continue on through the day as normal. It is around 101 deg F today in Louisiana so imagine my predicament. Vitadone! Vitadone is a multi-vitamin that is specially made for methadone patients that generally does what it says but only to an extent. It DOES help with the constipation. It DOES help with the sweating. It DOES help with the nodding off and the uncontrollable urge to inject jars of peanut butter into your veins from sugar cravings. Melted creamy peanut butter on top of chocolate ice cream is better than sex; sometimes; and I am a man. The Vitadone works on all these fronts but it won't perform miracles. I noticed considerable reductions on every level but it did not cure it completely. The cost for a 90 day supply is 25.00 Dollars American here but that is taking the suggested 3 pills per day. If I took 3 pills per day I would be krappin' like a goose on laxitives. I was able to take 1 pill a day and significantly stave off the side effects that I needed to. BUT THAT'S JUST ME. It is going to work differently for you. But don't be some moron and get on here and tell somebody it does not work because it didn't do miracles for you on the first day so you gave the bottle to your dog on the second day and stayed p!$$&@ off thinking it was a waste of money. that is the reason why I tend not to take other people's advise or opinion on things because they expect something to be perfect without any assistance from themselves and second, they are not honest in their opinion. I will not say it is the best thing since busting walnuts with your butt-cheeks but I won't call it trash either. It did work. Try it. Spend the 18 euros or 25 dollars and see how it works for you.

Now there is an honest post here concerning something you can try.

I have been on methadone for 6 yrs. and sweat horribly. I spoke about it with my physician, whom Rx'd Clonidine, and it DID NOT help me. The severe sweating only affects my face and head. I am at the point of wanting to discontinue the methadone and try another Rx. (Suboxone nauseated me.)

steve on July 27, 2010:

I also have problems with sweating I have been reducing now for 12 months and I’m on 10ml now and I still sweat as much, the only way I think you can stop it is get off the methadone .

Jane on July 16, 2010:

I have had surgery for hyperhidrosis, I have tried every treatment there is and nothing helps. The anticholinergics dry you out but the sweating still comes. I use an anticholinergic also clonidine for blood pressure and I still sweat severely. I change three to four times a day. If I go shopping, which I love to do, I have a soaking wet bra and underwear. I just can't stand it. Why isn't there any help. I sweat on my back and stomach where it isn't easily reached which doesn't help. Please someone help.

I thought that the awful sweating problem I was having was rare. I see that it is not. People without this problem just don't seem to understand how miserable it makes you. I have asked for help from my doctors without success. I wish I could offer some help to those with the methadone sweat problem but I can't. I am going to try the suggestions that have been posted here. I will try to get back and let everyone know what helped and what did not.

Justin on May 26, 2010:

I, also am on methadone and occasionally must deal with excessive sweating. I believe that if you want to seek out medications that may help with this you might want to look into a blood pressure med called Clonidine. My doctor used to prescribe it to me when I was trying to detox from heroin. Do a little google research on Clonidine and ask your PCP/Doctor about it.

sweatymess on May 26, 2010:

oh my..i have been on methadone for about 2 years and have never in my life been such a sweaty mess. in fact, i was the type of person who would barely break a sweat when exercising. now, all i do is sweat, no matter the temp outside or the amount of activity i do, i am always sweating! i can't keep makeup on my face, can't stand to wear anything fitted or close to my skin because i know i'll feel like i'm wearing tin-foil! such an awful side effect of this med, but my doctor doesn't believe me and it does help control my pain. so, we are all in the same boat. sure wish there was a supplement or something we could take to stop this!

NeverGivingUp on March 10, 2010:

I'm on Methadone also, & I sweat so badly. I live in humid Florida, so its double as awful!! Some days I go thru 3-4 shirts, & that's while using RX strength deoderant, baby powder, & wearing the coolest clothes possible!

Ive heard theres meds to help with this, but I cant seem to find any info.... Does anyone know???

Susan on February 28, 2010:

I have been on Methadone for chronic pain for over 15 years. It has ruined my marriage and my career. I have few friends (actually no friends) because leaving the house is so embarrassing. Who wants to go to a store (worse a restaurant) with sopping wet hair, continuous sweat dripping off your face, and your clothes drenched. I can't work like this, but I need to get a job so I'm not homeless - and I'm not kidding. I just don't know what to do. I need the methadone for the pain because it's unbearable without it, but the sweating is also unbearable. I can't believe there is nothing that can help.

Beth on February 18, 2010:

It is so nice to read comments from other people suffering from sweating with Methadone use. I take it for severe and chronic back pain. I cannot move without the methadone, but when I move even a little bit I sweat. And not just a small amount of sweat. Down my face, chest and back. I hate to go out in public. What is vitadone? Has it helped anyone else? Any other suggestions. I am desperate.

Yeah, Methadone can make a person sweat like crazy. I used to use the menopause thing for why are you sweating so bad, it is 10* outside and you are sweating. boy, the things that have happened since being on methadone. 30 years now, hinking about suboxne, did I spell it right?

I've had a sivere problem with "Methadone Sweating" for close to 10 years now. I seem to sweat with a lot of different pain medications and not just Methadone.

I sometimes wonder which is worse, the chronic pain that I suffer with, or sweating caused by the medications.

I sweat just filling or emptying the dishwasher, and I'm not joking!

I appreciate the information given here but these things don't help me with this problem. Does anyone else have any ideas that I could try? I'd truly appreciate any information!
