Many people have the habit of sleeping with the TV on - someone is afraid of absolute darkness, someone is afraid of silence, and someone just likes to fall asleep to a movie or music. However, doctors do not recommend sleeping in such an environment, and there are at least 10 reasons for this.
Reason #1: Melatonin
During sleep, the brain produces a special hormone melatonin, which is responsible for rest. However, this hormone is produced exclusively in the dark. The light from the screen hits even the closed eyelids, so the production of the substance is disrupted, because of this, the body does not receive the right substance, and the rest is inadequate.
Reason #2: Sound Waves
Even during the rest period, the body continues to respond to the outside world - sounds, smells, vibration waves. The brain receives information from the outside, and any loud bang or sound is perceived as a threat. A person may not wake up, but the signaling systems wake up. These micro-awakenings accumulate, and in the morning there is a feeling of fatigue.
Reason #3: Dry and hot air
The included appliances dry the air in the room, raise its temperature, and, consequently, worsen the microclimate in the bedroom. It is desirable to sleep in a cool room - this ensures better sleep.
Reason #4: Extra Information
As already mentioned, the body, even in a dream, continues to perceive information from the outside. Sounds and flashes lead not only to the awakening of signaling systems, but also to the perception of excessive information. The brain cannot rest because it is forced to control the signaling systems and process information. As a result, the rest remains incomplete.
Reason #5: Electromagnetic Radiation
A working TV emits electromagnetic waves that reduce the amount of melatonin produced. As a result, symptoms of chronic fatigue appear.
Reason #6: Sound hurts your hearing
Regularly falling asleep with the TV turned on leads to hearing loss, because to fully relax, it is necessary to muffle the sounds. If this does not happen, the body begins to dull the auditory sensitivity.
Reason #7: Dreams
Perceiving information from the outside, the brain projects them into dreams. Loud noises, movie conversations, or broadcasts can interfere with dreams, which in turn can cause nightmares, insomnia, and depression.
Reason #8: sleep phase disorder
A working TV causes a violation of the sleep phases, shortening them, and this, in turn, is reflected in the production of melatonin.
Reason #9: Circadian Rhythm Disruption
The circadian rhythm is the natural fluctuations of biological processes in the body. Sleeping with the TV turned on disrupts them, causing cell death, disruption of their regeneration, and ultimately leads to a decrease in the protective functions of the body.
Reason #10: Obesity
The presence of excess artificial light leads to a violation of the natural rhythms of the body, hormonal function, and this entails weight gain and leads to obesity.
As you can see, there are more than enough reasons to turn off the TV before going to bed. Scientists recommend that if a person cannot fall asleep sound, it is better to turn on the sounds of nature, they act on the body more favorably and do not cause such reactions as turning on the TV.
