10 Ways to Improve your Attitude

Improve Your Attitude

Attitude

Attitude

Become a Happier Person

Improving your attitude means improving your outlook on life. There are many ways to improve your attitude, you just have to want to. All of us have our “luggage”. How we deal with our luggage depends on our attitude. Looking at the bright side of life will make you a much happier person. An upbeat and positive attitude can be contagious too. Here are 10 ways to help you improve your attitude and become a happier person.

10 Ways to Improve Your Attitude

  1. Relax - Try getting up just 10 minutes earlier than usual. Make yourself a really good cup of coffee, or tea, however you like it. Don’t “hit the floor running”, sit down and relax for just a few minutes, think about the positive things that are going to happen today. Be glad to be alive!
  2. Talk to yourself, maybe not out loud, people may thing you have finally lost your mind, but tell your inner self that you are going to decide to have a good day. It’s up to you as to how you deal with things that occur during the day. If you will look at the positive side of things, instead of the negative, you will have a much better day!
  3. Do you have a favorite song? Pick several songs that make you happy. Record them to a disk or download them on your phone. Play them on your way to work. It will make your trip to work go by must faster and if you are lucky, one of the songs will stay on your mind all day!
  4. Do something nice for someone. Take donuts or breakfast burritos to your co-workers. Pay someone a compliment. Making someone else smile, will make you feel better too.
  5. Be inspired. Keep your favorite inspirational quotes on your desk or hang them on your wall where you can see them. When you are feeling a little negative, read them and remind yourself that you can change your attitude, it’s all about your outlook.
  6. Improve your surroundings. Is your work space dull and boring? Perk it up with some of your favorite pictures. Do you enjoy pictures of flowers, birds, or maybe waterfalls? Hang a couple of pictures on the wall or place them on your desk. What is your favorite color? Include something in your work space that is your favorite color. Is your house or apartment dark and gloomy? Brighten it up with pictures, or paint a wall in your favorite color. Surround yourself with things you like.
  7. Make a list. Write down the positive things in your life. Start with the fact that you woke up this morning! Did you wake up in your own home? Some people woke up in a homeless shelter. Did you eat something for breakfast this morning? Some people are digging in dumpsters trying to find their breakfast. Think about the things that you are thankful for.
  8. Turn negatives into positives. Did someone cut you off or pull out in front of you while you were driving to work? Instead of getting mad and giving them “the wave”, think about how stressed and unhappy they must be and think to yourself how thankful you are that you are not like them. If some makes a snide remark to you, don’t snap back. Instead, pay them a compliment. Not only will it really piss them off but, you will keep your upbeat attitude and it may even make you smile!
  9. Surround yourself with positive people. I realize that this is not always possible, but when you can, avoid people with negative attitudes. As I mentioned before, a positive attitude can be contagious, but so can a negative attitude. Don’t let yourself be brought down by someone else’s bad attitude.
  10. Pat yourself on the back. Acknowledge your accomplishments. Did you do a good job at work today? Did you cook a good meal for dinner? Tell yourself so! Not all of us have someone that will acknowledge our hard work, but you know when you did a good job. There is nothing wrong with praising yourself.

Summary

Having a positive attitude will not only make you a happier person, but people will enjoy being around you. Your upbeat attitude will become second nature with time. It can improve your home life as well as your professional life. Remember, you have the ability to control your attitude, it’s all up to you!

Hi sgbrown,

Great suggestions on how to improve our attitude. There is nothing wrong with patting ourselves on the back for a job well done but we should also not beat ourselves up with negative talk when we don't so well.

Voted up and awesome

Take care :)

Hi Pat! It's really not so hard to have a good day, it mostly in your attitude. We have been going through a lot of hard times lately and I try to keep my chin up and my attitude adjusted. It's not always easy, but if you will just look at the positives in your life, instead of the negatives, it will help improve your attitude. Which reminds me, I need to talk to my daughter this morning. Her world has recently been turned upside down and I think she could use a little "attitude adjustment". Thank you for stopping by and your wonderful comment! I always appreciate the angels and the hugs! I hope you have a very blessed and beautiful day, Pat! :)

Patricia Scott from North Central Florida on March 20, 2013:

You are so right....these are so smart. Turning around a negative always makes you feel better and makes life better for everyone.

Counting our blessings....writing down all of the +++ in our lives is very humbling and keeps us focused in the right direction.

We never know what may come our way so wasting precious moments on rotten things is counter productive.

Thanks for sharing this, Sheila.

Have a lovely, lovely day....Voted up++++

Angels and hugs are on the way :) ps

Hello Entourage! I think keeping a good attitude is something most of us struggle with from time to time. It's hard to be positive all the time! It is always good to pat yourself on the back when you can, these days you may be the only one who will! Thank you for your wonderful comment, it is always appreciated! Have a great day! :)

Sheila Brown (author) from Southern Oklahoma on January 16, 2013:

Hello Stacy! I'm sorry you have had a bad start to your new year, I hope that turns around for you! I can't imagine you having a bad attitude for any length of time! We can't always control what happens in our lives, but we can control how we react to it. I hope you feel much better very soon! :)

Stuart from Santa Barbara, CA on January 15, 2013:

A very well written article, this is something I struggle with sometimes. Its important to pat yourself on the back, recognize the positive in your life, look at what you're doing right and be happy for what you have, rather than what you don't have. In order to maintain a healthy mentality, its important to maintain a positive attitude. This article demonstrates that.

Stacy Harris from Hemet, Ca on January 15, 2013:

I have had a bad start to the year. And after a few days of moping around, I realized I didn't even want to be around myself. This is a great reminder that I need to perk up and improve my attitude sometimes. And that is what I did... I turned my thinking and I don't feel nearly as bad as I did at the beginning of the year! Great hub!

Sheila Brown (author) from Southern Oklahoma on January 13, 2013:

Hi Susan! Glad my timing was good! I'm sure we don't always really think about what we can to to improve our attitude, but a little reminder never hurts. I'll bet you don't need much of an attitude adjustment! You have always been very kind and helpful here! Thanks for stopping in and commenting. Have a wonderful day! :)

Sheila Brown (author) from Southern Oklahoma on January 13, 2013:

Thank you healthylife! I love to pay someone a compliment when they have just been rude to me. I usually get a shocked expression and then a smile. We need to praise ourselves from time to time and not always worry about what we need to improve on. Make yourself feel good about yourself! Thank you for stopping in and leaving such a wonderful comment, vote and share! It is always appreciated! Have a wonderful day! :)

Susan Zutautas from Ontario, Canada on January 13, 2013:

I read this hub at the best time possible. Thanks for the tips. I do some of but not all of them. I think it's time that I add the ones I'm missing.

healthylife2 on January 13, 2013:

You are full of wisdom! Although I practice some of these tips like avoiding negative people and I try to always find a half hour every day to relax and simply not accomplish anything even if not first thing in the morning. I will try reminding myself that someone else must be having a bad day when they are rude or obnoxious and how fun to compliment them and see their response:) I really do have to take a minute to remind myself of something I do well each day instead of thinking about all the things I should improve upon because that can be exhausting! Thanks so much for the excellent tips. Voted up and shared!

#1-#10, I do them all daily and offer them to others as suggestions. Most of the time they work, yet sometimes it doesn't. It all depends on the attitude. BTW, I do talk to myself out loud quite often...I thought that was normal :))

Hello Ms. Chrysalis! Everyone has a pity-party from time to time, but knowing that it is just temporary helps. That is when you have to give yourself a "good talking to" and remind yourself of all the good thing in life that you have. Thank you for your kind comment, it is always appreciated. Have a wonderful day! :)

Ms-Chrysalis from North Carolina on June 24, 2012:

Every once in a while, I'll find myself in the midst of a pity- party, but music can always lift me out of the doldrums. I always try to be thankful for the blessings I do have. Sometimes I find myself frusterated and caught up in the pursuit of material things. But me and my family are healthy and together. Knowing what's really important helps a lot. You provided great advice!
