10 Ways to Improve Your Life

We all have at least one thing in our lives that we’d like to change, whether it’s changing your eating habits, improving your social life, or reducing stress. This can be hard to do without some help though, and in this article we’ll walk you through 10 different ways to improve your life and make those positive changes you’ve been dreaming of making!

1) Journaling

Studies show that people who regularly journal are less depressed, sleep better, and have more positive emotions. A Journal of Clinical Psychology study shows that depression patients who wrote three times a week for 20 minutes reduced their symptoms by 57%. Keeping a journal allows you to get all your feelings out on paper—or in your computer file—so you can move past them without letting them hold you back. A 2013 study in Perspectives on Psychological Science found that people who kept daily journals exercised more and had healthier diets than those who didn’t keep up with their journals. If you write about what’s bugging you right now, it will help clear your mind so tomorrow can be a brighter day.

2) Sleep

Getting enough quality sleep is one of the most important things you can do for your health. When we don’t get enough sleep, our health suffers in numerous ways: increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and obesity; cognitive decline; more stress hormones in our bodies. It doesn’t matter if you have 8 hours or only 5—sleep is vital for a healthy body and mind. Make sure to give yourself enough time each night!

3) Gratitude

Being grateful is a simple, yet effective strategy that can improve your well-being and health. A study published in Psychological Science found that being thankful could help reduce stress and blood pressure levels. Start today by writing down what you’re grateful for, such as your friends or family, your health, or your money. Find little ways to show gratitude for those around you: send them a thank-you note for picking up groceries for you when you’re sick or bring treats over after their surgery. Expressing gratitude goes beyond just positive feelings—it has real physical and mental benefits! Every day, do one thing to show your appreciation of another person; it will strengthen relationships with others and even boost how happy you feel overall.

4) Holidays

Holidays are a great time for reflection and an opportunity to set new goals. If you find yourself dreading family gatherings, that’s a sign it’s time for a change. Resolve to limit future get-togethers or don’t attend at all. Holiday stress is inevitable, but you can reduce its impact by refusing invitations or planning activities you look forward to doing on your own. You may also want to consider pursuing alternative celebrations that provide traditions without generating stress and anxiety. Seasonal decorations: Decorating for the winter holidays is both fun and stressful because most people want their homes to look great for guests who will be visiting throughout December and beyond.

5) Meditation

Studies show that daily meditation can help improve focus, productivity, and work-life balance. In addition, the regular practice may help lower blood pressure and reduce anxiety. Find a quiet spot and be still for five minutes each day. Sounds easy? It’s not at first—but with a little discipline, it’ll soon become a part of your routine. If you can’t fit it in during work hours, try fitting it in before bed or first thing upon waking up. The benefits are worth it!

6) Taking Risks

Taking risks is what allows you to grow as a person. I’m not saying you should quit your job, get married in Vegas, and move across the country for someone you just met at a bar. But, if there are opportunities out there that seem too good to pass up or things about yourself that you want to change—take a risk! As cliché as it sounds, it’s true: growth happens outside of our comfort zone. If you have something left in life that you still need to try, go do it. There are no guarantees so now is your chance to say yes instead of hiding behind excuses. If one thing doesn’t work out how you planned, who knows what will happen next? Stay open-minded and let new opportunities come into your life. That doesn't mean being careless; be smart about taking risks but don't let fear hold you back from living every day with passion and motivation!

7) Surround yourself with Positive People

The people in your life are a big part of what determines your outlook on life. If you surround yourself with positive people, they’ll encourage you and help keep you motivated. If you’re always hanging out with people who complain and put others down, those behaviors will rub off on you—and that won’t be good for anyone. Make sure your social circle is a positive one so it can encourage, inspire, and support you.

8) Do Something for Others

Many of us have been focused on ourselves for so long that we forget how easy it is to help others. The concept of selflessness can seem elusive at times, but helping others doesn’t need to be complicated. Even something as simple as volunteering your time at a local charity can make a big difference in your life and someone else’s. The energy you give off from doing good will fuel you, giving you a chance to focus on what matters: helping others and yourself.

9) Exercise Daily

When it comes to weight loss, exercise is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it’s great for your health and improves your mood. But on the other hand, it can make you feel miserable if you're not doing something you enjoy. Try getting active with a friend or join a local sports team that allows you to meet people who have similar interests and goals. If you dread working out or running, try interval training. Studies show that shorter bursts of high-intensity exercises are just as effective as longer workouts and it’s more fun because you get more rest time! Another way to make exercise less dreadful is by setting goals such as beating your personal best for time or distance, instead of just exercising for an arbitrary amount of time each day.

10) Surround yourself with Nature

Several studies have shown that a natural environment can improve health, happiness, and overall well-being. One study found that when people spent 10 minutes walking in a natural setting, they had more energy and felt calmer afterward compared with participants who walked along a city street. So make time for outdoor walks during your lunch break, visit green spaces during your weekend outings or spend some extra time in nature when you get home from work. You’ll be glad you did. This is related because it has to do with taking care of yourself by focusing on improving little things (for example cleaning out shower drains) rather than big problems, which may cause stress which leads to depression!
