Jamey loves life and she wants to share with you what she has learned and still learning walking through her journey.
Next week is my 40th birthday and I have been reflecting in my life. In what I have reached to this point, in what I have lived, but most of all, in what I've learn. It has been a long road with ups and down, with a lot of beautiful and unforgettable moments but also a lot of learning experiences. Experiences that made me grow and be the woman I am now. I look back now and I definitely am not the same person I was 10 or 15 years ago. And that makes me think, if I could go back, what would I say to that younger version of me? What I wish to know at that point of my life? Well, I can't go back, that's for sure, but something I can do is telling you, if you are in your 20's or your 30's, I can share what I have learn and what you need to know before your 40's.
Here are 10 things that I wish someone told me many years ago. That is why I want to share and I hope they can help someone out there to stay focus on the things that really matter at a earlier point of their lives.
The following is what to me are 10 Things You Should Know Before 40.
1. Love Yourself First
I am a truly believer that if you don't love yourself first you can't give love to others. But it wasn't always like that. Only after a very toxic relationship I learn that you need to learn the right way to love yourself first before you can love or let someone else loves you. You deserve the best of this life. You deserve to look at the mirror and love the person you see. You deserve it! And that love start from inside out. The way you see yourself and you treat yourself is the way others are going to see you. So, what can you do to start working in self love? Here are some ideas:
- Look at the mirror every day and say "I Love You!". Say it from the bottom of your heart, clear and loud.
- Pamper yourself. It could be one time a week or one time a month. But make your body feel good. Get a massage, get a pedi, a mani, get your hair done, something! And yes, this apply for men too!
- Respect and make others respect your boundaries. This is very important. Please set your boundaries very clear and don't let anyone to cross that line.
- Have some contact with nature. Go with family, friends or even alone to enjoy some quiet time and connect with nature. Reflect on your day and plan things you really would like to doin the future.
- Call a friend. Maybe you haven't talk with a good friend for a while. Today is the day to call your dear friend and have a good conversation.
These are just a few ideas to start your self love journey. Find activities that you really enjoy and try to do them at least once a day. Soon it will turn into a habit and you will be loving yourself every single day! Remember, to take care of others, and to accomplish the things you want in life, you need to be in a good place with yourself from inside out. Love who you are.
2. Be Thankful For What You Have
If you think you don't have anything to be thankful for, think again. There is always something for what to be thankful. You are alive, you have eyes to read this, you live in a house. What I'm trying to say is that sometimes we are so stressed with the everyday challenges that we forget that we are so blessed. Just the fact to wake up every day to a new day is reason enough to be thankful.
During my life I have learn to take the action of Thank to another level. Yes, I have been always thankful for what I have, but I feel thankfulness is something we need to feel in a deeper way. We need to look around with attention and realize all the things we have to thank for.
So, as an almost 40 years old woman, I encourage you to look closer and discover how blessed you are. To open your eyes every morning and say "Thank You". To appreciate the smallest things in life. The more you thank, more reasons you are going to find to do it.
3. Take Good Care Of Your Health
This is not a secret. As we get older, the health issues start to appear. That's why you need to take good care of your health from now. Some ways to start taking good care of our health are:
- Stop smoking or drinking. No explanation needed.
- Do some exercise at least 30 minutes three times a week. Good for your heart. Good for your muscles.
- Have a balanced diet. Eat everything in moderation.
- Read. The mind needs food too.
4. Choose Your Friends Wiseley
Friend is a strong word. Not everyone is your friend. And maybe you have people around you that you think are your friends, but they are really not. How to know a person is a good friend? A true friend helps you when you need it, loves you, and want the best you could ever get in your life. Other than that, it's not a good friend, or a friend at all. Is not your friend a person who envy you. Is not your friend who wants to shine more than you. And it's not definitely your friend the one who turns their back on you.
We meet most of our friends early in life and it's important to choose wisely because those friends are going to be with us through our whole life. This friends are going to have the most awesome experiences with you! You are going to laugh together, cry together, and hold each other up when one of you need it. This is why you need choose very wisely. Choose people that contribute something positive to your life. People that connect to you in some way. And the most important thing, people who respect who and how you are.
5. Trust Your Instincts
Oh My God. This one has been hard to learn. Trust your instincts! Trust that little voice that sometimes tells you what to do. Sometimes we tend to ignore that voice that knows better than us. Lets say you have a full time job in a company, but there is a little voice inside you telling to open your own business. Do it! Sometimes we don't want to listen because we are scared to take that step. What if everything goes wrong? What if people don't buy my product? What if they don't like what I do? Stop! You are capable to do so much in this world if you leave your fears behind.
Today is a good day to start something new. Take that class you always wanted to, start that business, go to that place that calls you. Follow that voice and your life is going to change.
6. Believe In Your Abilities
"I am not good enough to..." How many times have you tell this to yourself? Stop, because you are good enough, I promise. You are great! You are wonderful! This belief probably comes from many years someone telling you exactly that. But let me tell you, you are never going to know how far you can go if you don't try it. Take this as a signal to start today. Switch the chip in your mind.
7. The Past Don't Define You
Not all experiences in life are good. Some of them hurt and are very hard to leave behind. And some of them affect the path of our lives because we make decisions in life based on how that experience affected us. Let me tell you today, you are not your past and yes, you can leave your bad experiences behind. It took me some time to understand that the present is the only time that really matter. Maybe we had some bad experiences in the past, and yes, they hurt, but they are not our present anymore. We have a new present now to enjoy. Why let things from the past to ruin something beautiful we have in front of us? So, I encourage you to live more in the present and stop bringing things that don't matter anymore from the past. I you feel you can't do it by yourself, a professional can give you tools to leave your bad experiences behind. A new you is going to shine.
8. Save Money
I remember that in some point of my life, saving was the last thing I was thinking of. Now I see the importance of saving and managing your money in a right way. We need money to live, that's a fact, and that is not going to change. You always are going to need money for something. Having a fund is going to give that peace of mind that in case something happen by surprise, you are going to be prepared. There are many reasons to start saving your money, future events, emergencies, goals you want to reach, or just because life happens! The time is now! Today banks and other institutions offer many good tools to help you start saving your money. Study very well all the options you have and choose the best that fits your saving plan. So, be wise and save your money.
9. Make Investments
Put your money to work for you. There are many ways to start investing, high risk, medium risk or low risk. Real state, start a business, invest in stocks, whatever you like the most, but do it. Study all the options you have and start investing your money. Put that money work for the years to come. It is important.
10. Love With All Your Heart
Many times you have heard when people say: "Life is too short." Well, it is. We are here now and tomorrow who knows. So, appreciate every single moment you have with the people you love. Hug them, tell them how much you love them, spend time with them, call them, text them. Sometimes we are so into our daily routine that we forget to let know to the special people in our lives how much they mean to us. Write a letter, make a little present with no reason. I am pretty sure your heart is going to feel as fuller as theirs.
What Comes Next?
Now that I'm reaching this point in life, I feel so happy to start a new chapter. I have learned so much through my journey, from the good, from the bad, I have learned. I hope this helped you open your mind to the fact that life is short, time goes fast, and every second count. Enjoy life, be thankful, be organize, learn about finances, forgive others, live in the present and love. Love with all your heart. Because at the end, that's what really matter. I can't wait to see what life has waiting for me.
