10 Ways to Whiten Your Teeth

When it comes to making your teeth whiter, you have all kinds of options, from whitening strips or the more expensive laser whitening treatments offered by your dentist. Some of these treatments can be quite costly. Luckily, there are plenty of home remedies that can help you get a brighter smile at a fraction of the cost and without any of the harsh side effects. In fact, many of the products that make up these natural remedies for teeth whitening are probably already in your kitchen. Here are 10 ways to whiten your teeth without visiting a dentist.

  1. Try Professional Whitening Strips
  2. Use Apple Cider Vinegar
  3. Use Baking Soda and Lemon Juice
  4. Use Coconut Oil
  5. Avoid Smoking
  6. Use Baking Soda With Water
  7. Use Strawberries
  8. Use Hydrogen Peroxide
  9. Use Bananas
  10. Use Activated Charcoal

1. Try Professional Whitening Strips

Brushing your teeth daily, flossing and using mouthwash are all great oral hygiene habits that you should already be doing. But if you want to take your dental health a step further, try professional whitening strips. These thin strips are coated with a peroxide-based gel that will help remove stains on your teeth and brighten your smile. They're an easy alternative to more complicated at-home whitening systems or expensive visits to the dentist.

Peroxide is the same ingredient used by dentists for professional whitening, and it's paired with a flexible material called polyethylene for easy application. The strips are designed to mold to the shape of your teeth, so they stay put and can be worn comfortably while you go about your day. The best part is that they're super affordable — one box costs less than $20 and contains 28 strips (14 treatments).

There are two different types of whitening strips available: Crest 3D White Whitestrips Glamorous White ($18) and Crest 3D White Whitestrips Professional Effects ($21). Both types work well, but if you have more stubborn stains on your teeth or just want to achieve a whiter smile as quickly as possible, try the Professional Effects version.

2. Use Apple Cider Vinegar

You know that apple cider vinegar is good for your body, but did you know it’s also great for your teeth? It’s true. Apple cider vinegar can help whiten your teeth and kill harmful bacteria in your mouth.

The acidity in apple cider vinegar helps to kill bacteria and remove stains from the surface of teeth, thanks to its high level of acetic acid. Just swish a teaspoon or two of apple cider vinegar in your mouth before brushing (not afterward, which would erode tooth enamel) or add some to water and use it as a natural mouthwash.

There are other ways to use apple cider vinegar to whiten teeth naturally. Besides swishing with plain ACV, try combining it with baking soda or coconut oil. Another option is to dip a damp toothbrush into ACV powder (which you can buy online). Swish for about 20 seconds and then brush your teeth as usual.

You don’t have to rely on apple cider vinegar alone for whiter teeth. You can also use it alongside other natural remedies. Some people report that regular use of activated charcoal helps whiten their smile, while others swear by DIY toothpaste made from coconut oil and baking soda.

Note: Don't use this method if you have tooth decay or cracked teeth, as the acidity could damage your teeth further.

3. Use Baking Soda and Lemon Juice

Baking soda is a natural teeth whitener that is safe and effective, as it contains no artificial colors or flavors and has been shown to be effective at removing plaque without damaging the enamel on your teeth. Baking soda helps remove stains, whiten teeth, and eliminate bad breath.

It helps you resist cavities, tooth decay, gingivitis, and periodontal disease, all of which can cause your teeth to discolor.

Baking soda is an abrasive substance that can help break up plaque and stain particles on your teeth. When used with lemon juice, which contains citric acid that can aid in bleaching your teeth, these two substances combined can be a powerful home whitening treatment.

Pour some baking soda into your hand and add enough fresh lemon juice to make a paste. Wipe your teeth and use a paper towel to remove any extra saliva off of them. Apply a generous amount of paste to your toothbrush. To avoid the acid harming enamel, leave the paste on for 1 minute before rinsing.

You can also just mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 2 teaspoons of water and dip your wet toothbrush into the mixture.

The best time to try this out is at night, right before bed. As you sleep, saliva production decreases, and this allows the lemon juice to remain on your teeth longer without risk of damage.

4. Use Coconut Oil

Whitening your teeth with coconut oil is a good idea. When you use coconut oil as a mouthwash, it's called "oil pulling." It reduces bacteria in the mouth that can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Coconut oil also has antibacterial properties and can help fight bad breath.

You can use coconut oil as a mouthwash for about 10 minutes at a time, two to three times a day. It may be easier to do this in the shower than over a sink unless you want splatter everywhere!

Coconut oil teeth whitening is a process called “oil pulling” which is a very old practice that has roots in Ayurvedic medicine (ancient Indian medicine).

So what is it? Oil pulling is the process of swishing oil around in your mouth for extended periods of time. This may appear strange to you, but it works!

Why does oil pulling work? The theory behind oil pulling is that the toxins in our mouths are drawn out by the fat molecules in the oil and then spit out. Once these toxins are removed, they can no longer stain our teeth and we are left with whiter teeth.

When you first start oil pulling, it is recommended to start doing short sessions (5-10 minutes) and then gradually increase your time as you get used to it. It's also important not to swallow any of the oil because of all the toxins that would go back into your body. Instead, spit it out into a trash can or sink. The process should be done on an empty stomach each morning before eating/drinking anything.

Here are five reasons why you should use coconut oil to whiten your teeth.

  1. Coconut oil is a natural antimicrobial agent, meaning that it helps to fight gingivitis and tooth decay by killing harmful bacteria in the mouth.
  2. Coconut oil helps to remove stains from the surface of teeth, helping to naturally whiten your smile.
  3. It's a healthy fat that provides a quick source of energy and can help you feel more full faster, which means it may aid with weight loss!
  4. Coconut oil helps to strengthen teeth and improve dental health by supporting the production of tooth enamel.
  5. The lauric acid found in coconut oil may help to improve bad breath by reducing odors caused by bacteria in the mouth and throat.

5. Avoid Smoking

One of the worst things you can do to your teeth is to smoke cigarettes. Smoking destroys good bacteria and replaces it with bad bacteria. The bad bacteria create plaque and tartar, which causes stains and gum disease. It also damages your gums and erodes your tooth enamel, causing cavities.

Smoking also ties into other oral health problems such as dry mouth, cancer, and tooth loss. You’re more likely to suffer from dry mouth if you smoke because smoking destroys your saliva glands. Dry mouth can lead to tooth decay since saliva isn't there to wash away the food residue that causes cavities.

If you smoke, you’re at a higher risk of being diagnosed with oral cancer than non-smokers. Research has shown that smoking increases your risk of developing oral cancer by seven times the normal level.

Bad breath is another side effect of smoking — caused by a combination of tar build-up, lack of saliva production, and a change in taste buds’ sensitivity — that affects both smokers and non-smokers alike.

It's never too late to quit smoking so don't delay if you want a healthy smile for years to come!6. Use baking soda

6. Use Baking Soda With Water

Baking soda is a natural whitener that many people use on their teeth. It is mildly abrasive, which means that it can remove stains from the surface of your teeth without damaging tooth enamel. To whiten your teeth with baking soda, mix one teaspoon of baking soda with two teaspoons of water to make a paste. Brush your teeth with this paste for at least two minutes before rinsing. It may be best to do this once or twice a week. Some people find that brushing with baking soda daily can cause too much abrasion on their tooth enamel.

Although there is no evidence that brushing your teeth with plain water will change their color, some studies suggest that using a mouthwash containing fluoride can help prevent further staining by stopping bacteria and plaque growth in the mouth. Try swishing plain water in your mouth after eating foods or drinking beverages that stain.

7. Use Strawberries

There are certain foods you can eat to help naturally whiten your teeth. Strawberries are one such food, and they actually contain an enzyme called malic acid, which is often found in many commercial tooth-whitening products.

It is believed that malic acid can help remove surface stains on your teeth. Eating strawberries will help exfoliate your teeth and clear away any plaque build-up. The natural sugars found in strawberries also help when you want to naturally whiten your teeth.

Strawberries are a great natural tooth whitener and they have some other benefits as well, so it can work out really well for you to use them in this way. It is easy to do, so you might want to consider using fresh strawberries on a more regular basis to whiten your teeth.

  • Mash a strawberry into a paste-like consistency and rub it over your teeth. Leave it on five minutes, then rinse with water.
  • You can also make this into a toothpaste by mixing 1 mashed strawberry, ½ teaspoon baking soda, and 1 teaspoon water. Brush regularly with this mixture for a few days or until you achieve the desired shade of white.
  • Another alternative is to mix the mashed strawberry with lemon juice, which contains citric acid (another natural bleaching agent), and brush as usual.
  • Gently rub fresh strawberry slices on your teeth for two minutes, then brush normally.

8. Use Hydrogen Peroxide

If you’re looking for a natural way to whiten your teeth, hydrogen peroxide is a great option. It’s a bleaching agent that can help remove stains caused by coffee, wine, and other dark-colored liquids.

Hydrogen peroxide can be utilized in two ways:

Add one teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide to one cup of water and mix well. Rinse your mouth for almost thirty seconds with the solution. You should notice an immediate difference in the brightness of your smile! Repeat this process for best results.

Use a cotton swab or your finger to apply hydrogen peroxide directly to your teeth. Allow one minute to pass before rinsing with water. Remember to never swallow hydrogen peroxide — it’s not meant to be swallowed! Swallowing it can cause stomach irritation and other side effects.9. Use Activated charcoal

This can be a safe way to whiten teeth, but it should only be used once or twice per week and should not replace normal brushing and flossing.

Why should you whiten your teeth with hydrogen peroxide?

The reason hydrogen peroxide is considered an effective teeth whitener is because it produces reactive oxygen species that break down the organic compounds and remove stains or discoloration.

In simpler terms, hydrogen peroxide is not the actual bleaching agent; it creates an environment that allows the bleach to work.

Hydrogen peroxide works by oxidizing the molecules that cause stains on your teeth. The result of this process is a whiter smile with fewer stains.

While there are many commercial and professional ways to whiten your teeth, hydrogen peroxide can be a safe, inexpensive and effective way to whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home.

09. Use Bananas

Have you ever tried whitening your teeth with bananas? No, not eating them. Using the inside of the peel. It’s supposed to be a natural way to whiten your teeth and has become a popular trend on social media sites like YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.

According to some people, rubbing the insides of banana peels on your teeth for two minutes a day can whiten teeth naturally over time.

The science behind it is pretty simple: Bananas are high in potassium, magnesium and manganese, which can help remove stains from teeth while promoting strong enamel. Simply take a banana peel and rub the inside portion against your teeth for two minutes, making sure to cover every tooth. Then brush normally with toothpaste.

You can do this once or twice a day until you see results or make it part of your daily dental routine because there's really no downside.

10. Use Activated Charcoal

The black charcoal powder is a type of carbon that absorbs toxins and helps whiten your teeth by removing surface stains. However, it's important to note that activated charcoal will not bleach your teeth white, but it will help remove discoloration and make them brighter.

Activated charcoal is made by burning regular charcoal and oxidizing it before crushing it into a fine powder that becomes adsorbent. Unlike other ingredients in toothpaste, activated charcoal doesn't just sit on top of your teeth — it's porous and can absorb bacteria-ridden plaque that discolors your enamel.

To whiten your teeth with activated charcoal, wet a toothbrush and dip into powdered activated charcoal. Brush teeth as normal and pay special attention to areas showing the most staining. Sip a bit of water, swish through teeth and spit. Rinse well, until spit is clear. Brush teeth again with water only.

So why aren't more people using charcoal to whiten their teeth? There are several reasons. For one, it's not the most attractive look — having black teeth is not likely to make you feel very confident. Second, there is little research available on the safety of using charcoal toothpaste and other products for this purpose.

Finally, it is time-consuming, messy and expensive. The process involves brushing with a powdered substance that turns your whole mouth black for about three minutes before rinsing thoroughly. You do this two or three times per week over the course of several weeks to get the desired effect.
