Fruits are good sources of vitamins especially vitamin A & C, and minerals. Some fruits provide phytochemicals as well and therefore some additional health benefits.

It has been found in studies that those who consume more fruits (& vegetables) as part of a healthy diet lower their risk of suffering from chronic diseases.

Fruits provide nutrients for the regular maintenance of the body and help to keep us healthy.

All fruits are cholesterol free while most are low in fat, calories and sodium.

Fruits provide certain very necessary nutrients like potassium, vitamin C, folate and fibre that our body normally falls short on.

A healthy diet is rich in fruit and veggies. This helps to reduce the risk of heart disease and some forms of cancer.

The dietary fibre lowers cholesterol, normalizes bowel functions and reduces constipation.

Those high in potassium lower BP, reduce kidney stone formation risk and loss of bone density.

Fruits are especially useful to those who wish to lower their calorie intake. Such people would benefit from increasing their fruit intake.

Folate in fruits helps to combat anaemia by producing red blood cells and in pregnant women help to prevent neural tube defects in the growing fetus especially in the first trimester, when the requirement of folate is most critical.

It is recommended that 50% of one's plate should consist of fruits and vegetables to prevent deficiency of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytochemicals.

Pomegranates

Pomegranates can be called a natural Viagra. The seeds and juice of pomegranates contain very powerful antioxidants and phytochemicals. They act like rust cleaners and clean up the vascular system, raise testosterone levels and tackle erectile dysfunction.

Pomegranates help improve prostate health by not only slowing the growth of prostate cancer cells but also making them commit suicide (apoptosis).

Apples

A medium-sized apple is loaded with 4 grams of soluble fibre about 17% of the daily requirement.

Apples improve colon health as well as regulate blood sugar levels and boost immunity among many other health benefits.

Watermelon is fat-free and very low in sodium but rich in Vitamin A & C. And rich in lycopene which lowers the risk of developing prostate cancer.

A cup and half of watermelon will provide over 10 mg of lycopene. An adult needs 10 mg of lycopene per day.

Grapefruit

Massively rich in flavonoid antioxidants and vitamin C, and especially fibre and is low in calories at the same time.

Grapefruit is a wonderful appetite suppressant that aids in lowering weight. The presence of the soluble fibre pectin lowers the risk of plaque deposition in arteries.

The only precaution is not to consume grapefruit with prescription medicines as it reacts with liver enzymes and retains medications for a longer period of time in the body.

Tomatoes

It may surprise you to know that though we may prefer large tomatoes, the smaller the tomato is the greater the amount of lycopene it contains and the healthier it is.

Cranberry tomatoes are the best and cherry tomatoes the next best.

Also, processing tomatoes increases the amount of lycopene that is available for absorption. and yes, pick up ripe tomatoes, that have ripened on the vine.

A tbsp of tomato ketchup provides 2.5 mg lycopene, 25% of the daily needs.

Lycopene lowers prostate cancer risk.

Grapes

Grapes are excellent as a quick energy food following a hard session at the gym.

They are high glycemic index foods that produce large amounts of glycogen that are helpful in replenishing the depleted nutrient after a hard workout.

Tart Cherries

Inflammation is the root cause of most health issues including aches & pains and heart diseases.

Tart Cherries have the maximum concentration of anthocyanins 1 & 2 which provide relief from inflammation. These anthocyanins block the enzymes that cause inflammation.

Avocados

Avocados are loaded with folate which makes the sperm healthy. It may interest you to know that the Aztecs referred to this fruit as "testicle trees".

Folate helps to prevent sperm mutations.

Lemons

Lemons aid in reducing fat as well as cholesterol. The citric acid in them breaks down the lipids.

Lemons also improve liver and gall bladder function and therefore drinking water to which juice of 1 lemon has been added, first thing in the morning, will keep these 2 organs performing their job well.

Blackberries

Blackberries not only provide high levels of phytonutrients but vitamin K as well These play a very important role in lowering the risk of developing prostate cancer.

Blackberries are high in manganese and therefore also help in optimizing testosterone production.

The high lutein levels help to prevent macular degeneration and thus improve eye health.

I have at one time or another eaten all of these fruits and now almost daily have apples, watermelon, tomatoes, and pomeloes. I'll have to see if I can get hold of the pomegranates.
