Sweet potatoes are an amazing root loaded with nutrients that are great for your skin and hair. This simple root contains Omega 3, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium, and more. While adding sweet potatoes to your diet is extremely important to one’s health, you can also use leftover sweet potatoes as part of your beauty routine.
Preparing Sweet Potatoes
To use the sweet potatoes in any of these beauty recipes, the root needs to first be cooked. Wash and skin the roots. Cover them with water in a pot and boil them until soft. Drain (save the sweet potato water and use it as a skin toner) and mash. You can keep the mash in the refrigerator for up to three day or you can pack the mash into small, plastic containers, and store them in the freezer. To use the frozen mash, remove a contain from the freezer and put it into the refrigerator the night before. It should be thawed by the next day.
1. Oily Skin Mask
If you have problems with oily skin, try this mask once or twice a week. Mix together 1/4 cup sweet potato mash, one tablespoon honey, and one teaspoon lemon juice. Apple the mask to your face and neck, avoiding your eyes. Leave it on for 20 minutes and rinse off with warm water. Apply your favorite moisturizer afterwards to lock in moisture and nutrients.
2. Dry Skin Face Mask
Repair your dry skin with this easy face mask you can use once or twice a week. Mix together 1/4 cup mashed sweet potatoes, one tablespoon aloe vera juice, and one tablespoon honey. Gently wash your face with warm water and a mild soap. Apple the mask and leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water and apply a moisturizer, such as coconut oil.
3. Oatmeal Face Scrub
For a gentle, healthy face scrub, mix together two tablespoons of mashed sweet potatoes, one tablespoon ground oats (a mortar and pestle works great for this), and one tablespoon plain yogurt. Gently massage the scrub into your face in slow, circular motions. Leave the scrub on as a mask for 15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water and apply your favorite moisturizer.
4. Dark Circles Under the Eyes
To help get rid of puffy eyes and dark circles, you do not need to cook up the sweet potato. Simply wash a small sweet potato and cut two thin slices from it. Lay back, close your eyes, and relax for a few minutes with the slices covering your eyes. Sweet potatoes have anti-inflammatory properties and can reduce dark pigmentation.
5. Mask for Dry Hair
Sweet potatoes help improve your hair’s shine and promotes hair growth, an awesome combination for people looking to grow out their dry, damaged hair. To make a hair mask with sweet potatoes, mix 1/2 cup of mashed sweet potatoes, 1/4 cup plain yogurt, one tablespoon honey, and one tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil. Apply the mask to dry or damp hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap or with plastic wrap and leave on for 30 minutes. Rinse out the hair mask with warm water and a mild shampoo. Condition, pat dry, and style as usual.
6. Ultimate Hair Repair Mask
You have probably already heard of the benefits of avocado on your hair, but when you add sweet potato to the mix, you’ve got yourself the ultimate hair repair formula. Put 1/4 cup avocado, 1/4 cup cooked sweet potato, one tablespoon extra virgin olive oil, and one tablespoon unrefined coconut oil into a blender and blend. Apply this mask to your hair and scalp. Cover with a shower cap or with plastic wrap and leave on for 30 minutes. Rinse out the hair mask with warm water and a mild shampoo. Condition, pat dry, and style as usual.
7. Sugar Body Scrub
Prepare this homemade exfoliator before taking your shower. Mix together 1/2 cup mashed sweet potatoes, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and one tablespoon extra virgin olive or almond oil. Use the body scrub gently on your face, arms, legs, butt, and feet. Avoid your eyes and sensitive areas. Rinse off, dab your skin dry, and apply your favorite moisturizer.
8. Dry Scaly Elbows
For dry, scaly elbows, do this treatment 1 to 4 days a week. You will need two tablespoons mashed sweet potatoes and one tablespoon of either coconut oil or shea butter. Do not melt the oil. Instead, mash the oil or butter with a fork and add the mashed sweet potatoes. Mash the ingredients together. If desires, you can whip the ingredients up with a handheld mixer. Apply the mask onto your elbows and cover with plastic wrap. Leave on for 30 minutes, rinse off in warm water, and apply more moisturizer, such as coconut oil or shea butter.
9. Full Body Mask for Dry Skin
If possible, get help to apply this full body mask. Put two cups mashed sweet potatoes, 1/2 cup plain yogurt, and 1/4 cup honey into a blender and whip it. Remove your clothes and lie down on towels or plastic. Apply the mask to your face, arms, legs, belly, back, or wherever you need moisturizer. Avoid sensitive areas. Relax for 30 minutes and then rinse off in warm water. Dab your skin dry and apply moisturizer, such as coconut oil or shea butter. Your skin will feel great afterwards.
10. Cracked Heels Foot Mash
If you are suffering from dry, cracked heels, boil two sweet potatoes that have been washed and skinned. When they are soft, set them aside, water and root, and let cool until comfortably warm. Pour the water and cooked root into a basin or tub large enough for your feet. Put your feet into the container and mash the sweet potatoes with your feet. Allow your feel to soak in the mash for 30 minutes. Wipe your feet clean, apply a heavy moisturizer, and put on a pair of socks.
