Vintage Woodworking Tools

All my life, (71) I've been collecting odds and ends, starting with my tiny sewing machine. My new husband Bob collects too. Two bowerbirds!

Old tools are quite beautiful, especially old hand tools

My husband, Bob, collects old hand tools for working with wood.

They are very attractive pieces, some with lovely shapes, and interesting uses.

The handles were usually wooden, curved to fit the hand and polished or varnished to look 'nice'.

I especially love these spokeshaves, with their curved handles.

Why collect old hand tools?

Because you like how they look!

Bob has so many he has lost count. He has mounted lots of these on old fence palings, which suit the previous uses for them perfectly.

Old hand tools come in many shapes and many sizes. Bob can't resist a good bargain, but he gets a little more discerning now.

He tries to collect a tool which is missing from his extensive collection.

What is a spokeshave?

Are they used any more?

A spokeshave is used to shape and smooth wood by hand to make pieces for things like chair legs, for example: a cabriole leg which is complex.

The furniture maker drags the blade across the surface to be shaped, using the curved handles.

They have largely been replaced by routers and lathes.

The latest spokeshave - is about two inches long

My grandpa was a carpenter in the early 1900s and raised his family off his hard work. On the side, he remodeled old homes, and would find all kinds of treasures inside those walls. This lens is wonderful, and brings back so many great memories. Thanks for all the effort you put into it!

Lori Green from Las Vegas on June 14, 2012:

I have a big box of my grandfather's old tools. I never thought of going though them. I guess I am off to the garage to see what treasures I can find.

wrapitup4me on June 14, 2012:

I saw some interesting wooden handled old tools at a flea market and I didn't get them. Maybe I should go back again. They were dirt cheap and would make a great display.

zigpop lm on June 14, 2012:

We have many of these around our old home place that were left behind. I am inspired to round them up and display them. Been putting it off but I think I will. Thanks for sharing, great lens.

Pieter Bouwer from Cape Town, South Africa on June 14, 2012:

Yes, I remember them. I used them long ago... spokeshaves, bow saws the lot. It required a lot of skill. Love them...

I love your quilt featuring your husbands old tool collection - I'm not sure how you did it - but I love it. I love vintage antique items and old tools are indeed beautiful items. Thank you so much for sharing.

KiwiGayle on June 13, 2012:

Great lens. I have a beautiful old miniature plane that with along other miniature tools I display on one of those racks that were used for letter blocks for printing. It provides endless delight for the blokes who visit and far more interesting than silly little ornaments.

flycatcherrr on June 13, 2012:

Great photos! I have a small collection of vintage woodworking tools, and I'm always searching for old tools. I like to think of the craftsmen who used these tools, and wonder what they made with them.

Love Vintage items! nice Lens!

Bill from Gold Coast, Australia on June 10, 2012:

I would love to collect old tools as I used to be a tradesman and enjoy working with my hands to create things. But as my dad is currently collecting antique woodworking tools, I do not have to. I will no doubt inherit his collection someday if he does not sell them off first. He is a carpenter who is close to retiring so this has become a hobby for him that he will probably continue with in retirement. I am glad that he has found a hobby to keep him interested in life. He is a lot happier now that he is collecting these items.

pawpaw911 on June 10, 2012:

Loved seeing all these great vintage tools. Nicely done.

mcampbell123 on June 10, 2012:

I bet you had to have a lot of skill to use those tools back in the day. Like my lens back please lol.

Jan T Urquhart Baillie (author) from Australia on June 10, 2012:

At least they were put to good use. I hope you can build up again.

Lee Hansen from Vermont on June 10, 2012:

I once had a huge collection of old woodworking tools, farm implements and household gadgets but had to sell them all to pay for my return to college. I'm starting to collect again, but they prices are much higher than when I started my collection in the early 1970s.
