RuneScape F2p Mage Pure Guide

Magic Pures are accounts which are created for the purpose of training mostly magic, while deliberately keeping other combat skills at a minimum, to be more effective in player-versus-player combat. RuneScape Mage Pures are now extremely powerful in the Wilderness, with the reintroduction of PvP. Mage Pures can hit a lot of damage at low levels, ideally killing their target before they have a chance to escape. This guide will show you how to get money for trainining your mage pure and how to effectively train your mage pure without gaining unnecessary combat levels.

If it turns out that Mage Pures aren't in your budget, you could also try one of the other types of F2p Pures.

Pure Money Making for Training

The first thing Mage Pures can do to make money is complete the Stronghold of Player Safety and Stronghold of Security for 20K (10k from each). Once you've trained as far as you can on your first 20k, you could collect Red spiders' eggs in the Varrock sewer or the runes in the Dark Knights' Fortress.

If you can get your cooking to 32 (which is easy), you can collect Chocolate bars, Cooking apples and Grapes in the Cooks' Guild for 10K to 20K an hour. Alternatively, mining still turns a nice profit starting at low levels. All you really need is something that will get you enough money to get to level 33 Magic when a profitable spell becomes available.

Training Your Pure

To start training your mage pure:

  1. Complete the Imp Catcher quest (buy the beads from the Grand Exchange, do not kill the imps yourself; this will cost less than 1000 gold pieces) to advance to Magic level 8
  2. Confuse the Monk of Zamorak locked up in a cell in Varrock Palace (while wearing heavy melee armour to guarantee a "splash", or missed hit, so you can instantly recast the spell on the same target) to level 11
  3. Weaken the Monk of Zamorak locked up in a cell in Varrock Palace (while wearing heavy melee armour to guarantee a "splash", or missed hit, so you can instantly recast the spell on the same target) to level 19
  4. Curse the Monk of Zamorak locked up in a cell in Varrock Palace (while wearing heavy melee armour to guarantee a "splash", or missed hit, so you can instantly recast the spell on the same target) to level 25
  5. Use Varrock Teleport to level 31
  6. Then Lumbridge Teleport to level 33 (this is the most expensive part)
  7. Telekinetic Grab the Wine of Zamorak in the Chaos temple (for a nice profit this time) to 43 or 55
  8. Once you get to level 43 you can use Superheat Item to make steel bars (with level 30 smithing). Buy the iron ores, coal and nature runes from the Grand Exchange and wield a fire staff, superheat the ores and then sell the steel bars for minimal loss (or sometimes a profit).
  9. Finally once you get to level 55 you can use High Level Alchemy to train more quickly with minimal loss.

Take note that all of these steps will give magic experience and little to no Constitution experience.

Will you be making a mage pure? Do you have any other types of pures already? Tell me what you think!

@Candor: Is 29cb with 51 magic and 20 str good? Should I start poking?

anonymous on May 16, 2012:

actually, high alch can be cast already on 52 with wizard mind bombs. helps to save you time :)

anonymous on May 11, 2012:

does it also lvl up your combat lvl?

anonymous on April 21, 2012:

If you do the stronghold of player safety, you can get straight to lvl 10 with the xp lamp.

anonymous on March 27, 2012:

will i still be able to be a good mage pure if i level up my constitution? cuz i really want a lot of health with also a low combat level and high damage

anonymous on February 25, 2012:

I would like to know what is good for mages to wear in combat on ftp?

anonymous on February 06, 2012:

thanks! Im making one now xD!

Candor (author) on January 23, 2012:

@anonymous: Actually it does. As I said in a previous comment, the negative magic attack value of metal armour allows you to almost always "splash" or miss. When you miss, you still get the experience, but can cast the spell again immediately. However, if you don't have a negative magic attack value and the spell hits, you have to wait for the effect to wear off before you cast it again. Therefor, you can cast the spell and gain experience much faster wearing armour.

anonymous on January 23, 2012:

Wearing armour, bronze/iron or whatever the case doesn't really matter. Otherwise great guide, 10/10 mate.

freerunescape on January 13, 2012:

Thanks, I been looking for a F2p Mage Pure Guide for some time now, will try it out!

anonymous on January 11, 2012:

can u add a way to earn money through mage at low level? because i needed lots of gold to buy runes for the confuse zamorak part and im broke D:

Nicholas Weller on January 05, 2012:

Great lens, but I still think Mages should keep attack lowest.. I'd rather be a mage tank than a mage staff atk pro? Idk haha.

anonymous on January 05, 2012:

What's the best thing to High LVL Alchemy? Bananas? Grapes? Anything?

anonymous on November 28, 2011:

the guide is great but at lvl 30's every1 will be pures is well and mage beats people with armour but you don't see tanks much often

Candor (author) on October 28, 2011:

@anonymous: You're absolutely right: Confuse, Weaken, and Curse never give constitution experience. The part about wearing heavy melee armour is in reference to the fact that it's negative magic attack will almost always guarantee a miss, which will allow you to recast the spell instantly instead of having to wait. The guide has been corrected to reflect this.

anonymous on October 27, 2011:

This is bothering me a bit actually, so I decided to add this... You DO NOT need to wear any melee armour at all, you can go with just your staff, air, fire, water, etc.... Depending on the spell being cast. These cast mentioned do not change your Constitution level AT ALL. I've been leveling my mage on the monk and have no gone up 1point in xp from level 1 mage to level 55 mage in Constitution.

cmontijo on September 30, 2011: of the best games I've ever played ^_^ total lvl 2300 with 131 cmbt ^_^

Candor (author) on August 30, 2011:

@anonymous: Go into the Varrock palace through the front door, the stairs will be right in front of you. The Monk of Zamorak's cell is behind the staircase.

anonymous on August 30, 2011:

I can't seem to find the zamorak prisoner... Could you help me?

anonymous on July 16, 2011:

@Candor: You can also use wind spells on the Wizard of Air south of Falador. Or Fire spells on the Wizard of fire etc... This is a great way of leveling magic without HP. Because you are using the same type of spell as the wizard, the wizard is immune to your att. Therefore, the fight is never-ending, and you gain magic XP while you are hitting 0's. That's what i have done, to gain lvl 50 magic

Candor (author) on June 17, 2011:

@anonymous: It doesn't have to be at 10, but you want your Constitution level to be as low as possible because that helps to keep your combat level low. The goal of a pure is to kill your opponent before they can inflict serious damage on you.

anonymous on June 15, 2011:

So you want to keep hp level at 10 even when pking??

freerunescape on June 15, 2011:

Great guide, thanks! I been looking long for a mage pure guide!

Candor (author) on June 01, 2011:

@anonymous: The highest level melee armour you can wear.

anonymous on June 01, 2011:

heavy armour? like if your def is 1 u wear bronze?

Candor (author) on May 26, 2011:

@anonymous: For F2p it's pretty low, from about 20 to 50 when PKing people of about your own level. In P2p it can go up as far as 70, or even higher with Ancient Magicks and a few stat tweaks.

anonymous on May 26, 2011:

What is the ideal combat level for mage pures who PK?

anonymous on May 25, 2011:

@Iyvnorg: keep in mind this is a f2p guide

Candor (author) on May 15, 2011:

@anonymous: Thanks, that's a much better idea. I've updated accordingly.

anonymous on May 15, 2011:

If you do the imp catcher quest and buy the beads, you can get straight to level 8 magic with no constitution level

Candor (author) on May 14, 2011:

@anonymous: Thanks for telling me about the changes to dummies, I've updated the guide to a method that does work.

Candor (author) on May 14, 2011:

@Iyvnorg: It's true that Camelot teleport is faster, but this is a F2p guide and Camelot teleport is P2p.

Iyvnorg on March 06, 2011:

A faster way from 45-55 magic would be casting Camelot teleports. Teleports are quite expensive though. I like the idea of no Hp exp for mage pures. It allows them to hit with that well needed extra force.

anonymous on February 05, 2011:

thanks man! gonna pwn in wildy!

anonymous on December 18, 2010:

couple of things, first of all, thanks for the guide! :-D secondly, it wont allow you to cast stat changing spells on dummies (just tried it), and after a while u can't train on them anymore altogether, you get the message "there is nothing more you can learn from casting at this dummy". lastly, if ur starting out, to avoid getting constitution xp, just get the magic lamps from the stronghold of safety, and you will automatically get to lvl 9 mage, (along with 10k gold and safety gloves)

livyf on September 29, 2010:

I'm a proud ancient mage... although I died a few times. It was the vampire that kept killing me. Ancients is fun in pvp. I like to see them squirm.

freersmembership on September 14, 2010:

Nice guide! Pretty basic, but works very nicely, you can gain faster magic exp if you are a member, plus you can use ancient magic's if you compete the desert treasure quest!

anonymous on June 26, 2010:

nice guide this is exactly what i have been looking for X D
