The Marvel Ultimate Cataclysm Reading Order

...And then one day, on a planet far away, Galactus appeared and prepared to destroy us all!

Following from the Age of Ultron Aftermath and Hunger, Galactus, that mighty cosmic destroyer of Earth-616, got sucked into the Ultimate Universe. No problem, he says. Well, not quite. He's still hungry. And he's headed to Earth.

Welcome to the Cataclysm Reading Order and Summary Page. This is a landing site for the Marvel event based in the Earth-1610 Universe. It will be involving most, if not all of their superheroes as they struggle to survive and overcome one of the most powerful beings from "our" universe. It's not playtime anymore, my friends. Time to get down and dirty.

Here you'll get a two types of summaries. There will be the generic, listed format for the observer; that's going to set things right and keep you on track. But if you're into the nitty-gritty - if you just don't care about spoilers - then read on; also provided is a detailed and noted Summary Section of each issue. Hopefully it will answer any confusing thoughts you may have.

And don't forget the artwork, too.

003 Cataclysm - Ultimate X-Men #1 - This X-Men series with Galactus is related, but only barely part of the main plot. It is being kept together so as not to ruin the rest of the Reading Order, which is actually connected. It occurs in a pocket dimension. After surviving the Tien attack, Rogue and the rest of her team are looking for other mutants. They find Pixie, but only when the visage of Galactus appears on the horizon. Scared, Pixie teleports them all to a pocket dimension with the Gah Lak Tus swarm. Now that Pixie is too weak to teleport them back, they have to fight. At the end, they run into a strange cosmic being...Rick Jones.

004 Cataclysm - Ultimate X-Men #2 - The mutants and Rick continue fighting, but the swarm is able to adapt. The battle their way through this dimension attempt different combinations of counter-offensives. At the same time, nothing is keeping the swarm from reconstituting. At the end, Rogue grabs all their powers and turns into a super-charged fighting mutant.

005 Cataclysm - Ultimate X-Men #3 - Rogue is battling the swarm, but she's now unable to contain the power she took from Rick. He goes to help her, finally getting her back under control. Meanwhile, as Pixie has been gathering strength, she's stabbed through from behind. About to die, Rogue takes her power. Rick has to stay and they vow to help him as they teleport back to their world. Their story resumes in The Ultimates' Last Stand #4.

006 Cataclysm - The Ultimates' Last Stand #1 - Was released before Cataclysm - Ultimate Spider-Man #1, but almost all of the events in this issue happen after it. While Miles is talking to his buddy, they look up into the sky and see a being of cosmic proportions. It's Galactus! He dons his Spidey outfit, unsure if there is anything a little guy of his power can do. At the front, Monica Change and SHIELD has just arrived; they begin a battery of weapon assaults, but they are having no effect. She fear's the worst until The Ultimates show up. Thor begins his notorious attack-when-in-doubt maneuver and strikes Galactus in the head. One by one, the rest of the heroes join in. Unfortunately, all it does is make the Devourer of Worlds mad. He retaliates and erupts in power that only The Invisible Woman's force field can block. He then resumes his daily schedule:

Galactus To-Do List

  1. Arrive On Planet - CHECK!
  2. Find New York - CHECK!
  3. Eat Planet

007 Cataclysm - Ultimate Comics Ultimates #1 - The issue runs before and during the arrival of Earth-616 Galactus, but can be pushed after Ultimates' Last Stand #1 because it would spoil that issue. A wave of cult extremism spreads across the world, first in Minsk, Belarus and later the USA. In a day and a half, Belarus is converted to followers of Gah Lak Tus; it appears to be some form of zombie-techno state virus. SHIELD monitors the event and determines the leader is MODOK after he makes a worldwide speech. Run by AIM, the villain takes to the United States and has his followers join with Galactus and the Gah Lak Tus swarm he has merged with. It transforms them and they are no longer human. The Ultimates join the fight, but it quickly turns against them. Abagail Brand is hit and the virus begins taking her over. Nick Fury, in response to the rapidly deteriorating situation, decides to shoot Banner into the fray. He does so and now we have Hulk at the battle. Unfortunately, the virus also affects him...

008 Cataclysm - The Ultimates' Last Stand #2 - Miles grabs a ride off a helicopter and shoots himself towards Galactus. He's barely saved by Thor before being swatted away. The entire group of heroes is now standing back, trying to figure out how to fight the entity. Stark questions Mysterio, from Galactus' universe, and learns the Reed Richards from his earth would no what to do. After some quibbling, Miles volunteers to go. Suddenly, Reed Richards, the evil one from their own earth, shows up and volunteers to go. The issue then shows Utopia, where the X-Men reside. The members agree that they'll have to help fight this incredible battle.

009 Cataclysm Ultimate Comics Ultimates #2 - The main fight of this series is at The Forgotten City. The MODOK villain now has a name: Tarleton, and he's an extraordinary man-machine. Dr. Sam Wilson faces him in the City as it's being turned into a floating weapon. Tarleton has a simple goal: become the Herald of Galactus, leading the swarm and working for the entity. One by one Fury's Commandos are being converted. Soon, all that's left is Fury, Ketch, Herc, and a few others.

010 Cataclysm - Ultimate Comics Ultimates #3 - (This issue occurs after Galactus has decimated New Jersey.)The battle is in full swing and Fury's side is about to fall. Blonsky is down. Stature is down. Using the unpredictable teleporter, Fury gets his remaining troops out. Sam is now captive of Tarleton, but it doesn't matter, he somehow helps Fury teleport in where they destroy Tarleton. But not before Danny Ketch takes over the swarm; now Ketch has to turn the swarm inert. Tarleton tries to escape, but in a valiant moment of self-sacrifice, Ketch blows the city-ship up. Fury has teleported the group out. ...And later, Ketch realizes he's not dead. At an undisclosed location, he examines his hands to see he is a...Machine Man!

011 Cataclysm - Ultimate Spider-man #2 - During Ultimates' Last Stand #2, Captain America tells the heroes to help the people on the streets. This correlates to Miles and Jessica working together. This issue contains some flashbacks, but focuses primarily on the superheroes Cloak, Dagger, Bombshell and Spider-Man. When Galactus shows up, Cloak and Dagger try to fight, but realize they are outmatched. They attempt to help people get to the hospital. Bombshell decides to use her powers to keep people from stealing and rioting. Miles, attempts to save people, and finds his dad. He pulls off his mask, but his dad is struck in awe since he's hates heroes and mutants all along.

012 Cataclysm - Ultimate Spider-man #3 - While Miles is attempting to save his dad, an airplane goes down overhead. He leaves and attempts to help find survivors. At the site, he meets up with Cloak, Dagger, Bomshell, and Spider-Woman as they sift through the wreckage. J. Jonah Jameson happens to be on board, too. Afterwards, he returns to his father. Unfortunately, his dad is nowhere in sight. That's when he contacts Captain America and is told they need him. At the end of the issue, we are told that this story resumes in The Ultimate's Last Stand #4, but what transpires here is clearly before issue #3.

013 Cataclysm - The Ultimates' Last Stand #3 - Miles and Reed head through the portal, but not before Stark gives Miles a repulsor to kill Reed if he tries something evil. They enter the Baxter Building and pull the files on Galactus, learning everything. Suddenly, they are surprised by Valeria, she realizes that this version of Reed is not her dad and alerts security. Miles makes a break for the exit and to the portal, getting scratched up, but succeeding. A few minutes later, Reed appears. He then apologizes to Susan for destroying her dream, telling her he saw their daughter.

014 Cataclysm - The Ultimates' Last Stand #4 - The X-men are in Manhattan, and now believe there is nothing more they can do. Suddenly Captain America pulls up in a SHIELD aircraft and tells Kitty that they need her help. Back at their headquarters, Stark and Reed have come up with a plan to diffuse Galactus' machine: Kitty will be turned giant-sized with armor and phase through it. No one is certain if she'll survive, but she agrees to anyway. Jean Grey is also put to use and given a Cerebro helmet to use to see the thoughts of the entity. She senses the confusion and hunger, but is then noticed. Galactus begins to attack. Reed says they need more time; Captain America grabs a ship and Storm flies out to cover him. Using the aircraft, Cap keeps the entity at bay; Storm keeps encircling it with air funnels. Suddenly, Cap makes a distraction attacks and rams his craft into the being. We're not sure now if he's dead.

015 Cataclysm - The Ultimates Last Stand #5 - After the explosion, Kitty goes "giant" and attacks Galactus. She's phasing and fighting, destroying his machines. During this, Richards sends his last Negative Zone bot out and it opens a portal, sucking Galactus in. Thor appears and follows up with lightning. As the portal closes, everyone is saved but Thor, trapped with Galactus. There is no sign of Captain America, now believed dead. The world, though, is saved. And Galactus is stuck in a dimension with nothing to feed on.
