League of Legends Rune Pages Guide: A Guide To Runes

League of Legends: Rune Pages Guide For Champions

The following Rune Page Guide aims to help League of Legends players choose AD runes, AP runes, support runes, jungle runes and tank runes. With this guide you will learn the runes to purchase and which runes are most effective on each champion.

Runes allow you to customise the champions you play to suit your play style. These runes mostly affect your early game and can be defensive, offensive or utility based. This could be maximising your mana regeneration so you can use your abilities more or focusing on a defensive setup for a weak laning champion.

Runes are something that all summoners should use, but deciding on which runes to run on each champion can be daunting for newer players. This guide aims to provide some guidelines regarding rune choices for various champions.

Don't forget that this guide only offers guidelines of the best standard rune pages. The suggested rune pages may not work for your play style or your champion (some champions require specialised rune pages to perform at their best). All the rune pages contain Tier 3 runes.

If you are a new League of Legends player looking for a basic rune overview and help on building your first rune pages, I recommend watching this Rune Page Guide Video.

Must Have Runes

Below are the runes that should be your first purchases for each rune type (Mark, Seal, Glyphs & Quintessences). The runes listed will allow you to make all the standard rune pages you will ever need (All runes are Tier 3 Runes).

You can click on each rune type to see the names of each rune within its category (links open in a new window to the League of Legends Wiki).

  • Marks: Armor Penetration, Attack Damage & Magic Penetration
  • Seals: Armor & Mana Regeneration (Per Level)
  • Glyphs: Ability Power (Per Level) & Magic Resistance (Per Level)
  • Quintessences: Health, Attack Damage & Ability Power

Other Good Rune Choices

After you have purchased the "must have" runes listed above, you should consider buying the runes listed below with any spare Influence Points (IP) if you feel they would benefit your playstyle or champions that you play.

  • Marks: Attack Speed & Armor
  • Seals: Health Per Level & Gold Gain (Gold /10)
  • Glyphs: Magic Resistance
  • Quintessences: Attack Speed, Movement Speed, Gold Gain (Gold /10), Lifesteal & Spellvamp.

Attack Damage vs Armor Penetration Marks

The Pros and Cons of Each For AD Runes

There is lots of debate and questions regarding the use of Attack Damage or Armor Penetration Marks in for AD runes. The AD rune pages on this page all feature Armor Penetration as I believe they are better for the majority of the readers coming to this page. I strongly recommend reading this mathematical analysis on the matter.

The pros and cons are also briefly discussed below, I recommend newer players stick with Armor Penetration but intermediate and advanced players can consider Attack Damage.

Benefits Of Armor Penetration Marks

  • Required in most jungle rune pages (6 runes needed) to optimise jungle speed.
  • Also needed for most brusier (solo top runes), making it a great way to save IP.
  • Stronger mid-game damage (level 4/5+).
  • Good for skills that deal physical damage but scale with Ability Power.
  • Great for physical spells with high base values but lower attack damage ratios (a lot of brusiers).
Scroll to Continue

Benefits Of Attack Damage Marks

  • Easier last-hitting (great if you have trouble).
  • Stronger damage early game (level 1-4) .
  • Great for spells that scale from AD but deal magic damage.
  • Great for aggressive players.

Rune Book 1 - AD Runes - The Best AD Runes For AD Champions/Carries

This rune page is is your standard AD rune page for your AD champions and is run by the majority of players. This rune page uses armor on Seals to reduce the incoming damage from minions and other AD champions (which you will be laning against). It also uses Attack Damage Quintessences to make for easier last-hitting and for better damage output. Attack Damage Marks are also a strong option depending on your preference (see the discussion above to find out the benefits and disadvantages).

-15 Armor Penetration (Marks)

-13 Armor (Seals)

-24 Magic Resistance @ Level 18 (Glyphs)

-7 Attack Damage (Quints)

10,455 Influence Points (IP)

-Used by the best League of Legends players

-Makes last-hitting minions easy

-Armor to reduce minion damage and AD champion damage

-No mana regeneration (must know how to manage your mana)

-No starting health (makes you more vulnerable early game)

Works Best On:

-Ranged AD Champions

-When laning with a support champion

Rune Book 2 - AD Runes - The Cheap and Versatile AD Rune Page

This page is your best choice when you start to build your rune pages as a number of the runes are usable on other rune pages (such as AP or tanks) saving you some serious IP. If you play AD champions a lot or aren't concerned about spending Influence Points then definitely ignore this page and look at building the second rune book featured on this page (just below this one).

-15 Armor Penetration (Marks)

-11 Mana Regeneration @ Level 18 (Seals)

-24 Magic Resistance @ Level 18 (Glyphs)

-78 Health (Quints)

13,530 Influence Points (IP)

-Good mix of defence, offence and utility

-Works for any AD champion

-Contains runes that can be used for other rune pages (saves IP)

-Does not specialise in a particular area

-May not suit your playstyle

-Does not have Armor, making you weaker against another AD.

Works Best On:

-Any Attack Damage (AD) Champion that uses mana.

-Performs better on ranged Attack Damage (AD) champions.

Other AD Champion Rune Options

Runes should always be used to assist your playstyle and as such there are a few changes you can make to either of the above suggestions for your AD champion rune page in League of Legends.

  • Attack Damage Marks: As already discussed these aid last hitting and give you more early game damage.
  • Lifesteal Quints: You can add these to provide an extra 6% lifesteal early game, combined with the Vampirism mastery and a Doran's Blade you can start with 12% lifesteal and outlast your enemy.
  • Movement Quints: You can add these to provide you with extra movement speed, these are a great addition on your melee AD champions.
  • Attack Speed Quints: If your champion relies on attack speed to deal damage you can use attack speed Quintessences.

Rune Book 3 - AP Runes - AP Runes (Mid Runes) - Defensive Caster Setup

This AP rune page is your bread and butter caster setup. It gives you abit of everything that you need (penetration, mana regeneration, magic resistance and starting health) and is a solid choice for any AP based champion. Flat Magic Resistance allows you take less damage during the early-mid stages of a game against your AP counterpart.

-8.5 Magic Penetration (Marks)

-11 Mana Regeneration @ 18 (Seals)

-12 Magic Resistance (Glyphs)

-78 Health (Quints)

13,530 Influence Points (IP)

-Works on any Ability Power (AP) champion.

-Provides a bit of everything.

-Has runes that can be re-used for many other champion types.

-May not suit your particular playstyle.

-Doesn't give you strong early game damage.

Works Best On:

-Any Ability Power (AP) Champion that uses mana.

Rune Book 4 - AP Runes - A More Offensive Choice For AP Champions

This rune page is a more offensive based setup for a caster, maximising your Ability Power. It works best on AP champions that have strong Ability Power ratios and have a strong early-mid game phase. I only recommend using this rune page if you intend to play aggressively and make use of the bonus Ability Power.

-8.5 Magic Penetration (Marks)

-11 Mana Regeneration @ 18 (Seals)

-28 Ability Power @ 18 (Glyphs)

-15 Ability Power (Quintessences)

12,300 Influence Points (IP)

-Strong early-mid game damage

-Allows you to snowball quickly against unaware opponents.

-Does not work well on low AP-scaling champions

Works Best On:

-Strong early-mid game Ability Power (AP) champions.

-Ability Power (AP) champions with good AP scaling on their abilities.

Other AP Champion Rune Options

Runes should always be used to assist your playstyle and as such there are a few changes you can make to either of the above suggestions for your AP champion rune page in League of Legends.

  • Spellvamp Quints: You can add these to provide some extra lane sustain and works particularly well on AP champions already focused on this (such as Vladimir).
  • Armor Seals: These are a good replacement for mana regeneration on any non-mana Ability Power champion such as Vladimir, Katarina or Kennen.
  • Movement Speed: Some AP champions are very strong with the extra movement speed to chase down their enemies, consider these if you enjoy playing aggressive.

Rune Book 5 - Top Runes - A Durable Setup For Your Top Lane Champions

This rune page should be your standard top runes as it works on a variety of champions. If you specialise in playing a particular top lane champion (AD) then consider reading some champion specific guides to find the most optimal top lane setup.

-15 Armor Penetration (Marks)

-14 Armor (Seals)

-24 Magic Resistance @ Level 18 (Glyphs)

-78 Health (Quints)

13,530 Influence Points (IP)

-Great durability thanks to Armor, Magic Resistance and Health.

-Rune choices save you a lot of IP as they can be used on other pages.

-Needs careful mana management.

-Not perfect for all top laners, some will need AD Marks depending on abilities.

Works Best On:

-AD bruiser top lane champions.

Rune Book 6 - Tank Runes - Standard Tank Rune Page (Also Works On AP Top Lane Bruisers)

This rune page is your standard tank setup, focusing on overall durability. Magic Penetration is taken as tanks all have some damage output and it is generally magic based. You can mix and match certain aspects of this rune page to suit your playstyle or tank champion and these will be outlined below.

-8.5 Magic Penetration (Marks)

-14 Armor (Seals)

-24 Magic Resistance @ Level 18 (Glyphs)

-78 Health (Quints)

13,530 Influence Points (IP)

-Strong survivability with both armor and magic resistance.

-Contains runes that are usable in many other rune pages (saves a lot of IP)

-Lacks mana regeneration.

-May not be perfect for all tank champions.

Works Best On:

-Most tanks and durable magic damage top laners such as Singed, ChoGath or Rumble.

-Tanks not heavily reliant on mana and mana regeneration.

Other Tank & Top Champion Rune Options

Runes should always be used to assist your playstyle and as such there are a few changes you can make to the above suggestions for your Tank champion rune page in League of Legends.

  • Movement Speed Quints: These are a great addition for tanks that rely on positioning to be effective.
  • Attack Damage Quints/Marks: If you are playing a champion that scales well with Attack Damage.
  • Flat Magic Resistance Glyphs: If you know you are going to be up against an AP champion, you'll want to run flat Magic Resistance for the early game damage reduction as opposed to the mid-late game benefits from the MR Per Level.

Rune Book 7 - Support Runes - A Simple Rune Setup For Your Support Champions

This rune page is a good standard support rune page as it uses a mixture of runes from other rune pages, this is great if you have limited rune pages and is especially great at saving your Influence Points (IP). There are several other support champion options for rune pages which will be shown below as well. I eventually recommend you work towards building up a support rune page with Gold/10 Quints and Armor Marks.

-8.5 Magic Penetration (Marks)

-13 Armor (Seals)

-24 Magic Resistance @ 18 (Glyphs)

-78 Health (Quints)

13,530 Influence Points (IP)

-Works on any Support champion & uses runes from other pages (good for saving IP)

-Provides important stats for support champions

-Not the most effective option

-May not suit all support champion needs or your playstyle

Works Best On:

-Most support champions.

Other Support Champion Rune Options

Runes should always be used to assist your playstyle and as such there are a few changes you can make to the above suggestions for your Support champion rune page in League of Legends.

  • Armor Marks: These make you alittle more tanky allowing you to take abit more punishment in lane and ultimately die less. As your goal is not to deal damage you can easily drop the magic penetration Marks.
  • Movement Speed Quints: Allow you to stay safe at the back of the team.
  • Gold Gain Seals & Quints: Increases the amount of gold you gain overtime, helping you get your items easily.

Rune Book 8 - Jungle Runes - Standard AD Jungle Rune Page Setup

This rune page is a great standard jungler rune page (and also doubles as an AD champion rune page, great if you have limited rune pages). It offers a lot of survivability with armor (a must for jungling anyway), some magic resistance and some solid starting health. This will not be 100% optimal for all junglers. For perfect champion based jungle rune pages see Stonewall008's YouTube Channel.

-15 Armor Penetration (Marks)

-13 Armor (Seals)

-24 Magic Resistance @ Level 18 (Glyphs)

-78 Health (Quints)

13,530 Influence Points (IP)

-Works on any AD jungler

-Doubles as a standard AD champion page to save on rune pages.

-Lacks attack speed (boosts jungle speed)

-Isn't optimal for every jungler.

Works Best On:

-Attack Damage Junglers

Other Jungle Champion Rune Options

Runes should always be used to assist your playstyle and as such there are a few changes you can make to the above suggestions for your Jungle champion rune page in League of Legends.

As mentioned previously I highly recommend checking out Stonewall008's YouTube Channel to find the perfect jungle rune page for your champion, this page is intended as a basic guide to runes and not a jungle rune guide, there are too many variations to cover on this page.

  • Attack Speed Marks/Quints: Some junglers benefit heavily from added attack speed as it increases their jungle clear times and survivability.
  • Attack Damage Marks/Quints: Some junglers have abilities that scale very well with attack damage (AD), as such they benefit highly from this stat.

@anonymous: I used to play a lot of Swain myself, I really like what he brought to the top lane. I would definitely recommend running two different rune pages because in top lane you really need the Armor on your Seals to give you more survivability.

Hey, my main champion is Swain, and im having some trouble building the perfect runepage for him. He's not that burst ap champ, more like a DoT-and-Run champ in the early game. @PunkyMedic LM: Feel free to use my answer.

I also main Morgana in ranked. I run Mpen, Mana Regeneration, AP/Lvl and Flat Ability Power.

This mathematically gives her the best damage output at all stages of the game. If you want to play more defensive though you can always run Health.

PunkyMedic LM on January 18, 2013:

@PunkyMedic LM: For an AP champion like Morgana, is it better to have more Magic Pen, Ability Power or both?

I'd also like to post your answer on my lens, if that's ok.

PunkyMedic LM on January 16, 2013:

I completely suck with runes. My main character is Morgana. My user is gamergurly.

Samuel Franklin (author) on January 09, 2013:

@Rossouw Coetzee: Thanks. It would depend if you are playing him in the top lane or in the jungle.

Top lane I would go:

Magic Pen

MR Per Level

Health/Movement Speed

As a jungle I would replace your marks with Attack Speed for faster clear times.

@Voltarbear: I would run...

Armor Penetration/Attack Damage

Magic Resistance Per Level

Health/Movement Speed

Samuel Franklin (author) on August 25, 2012:

@anonymous: Hey Stevo thanks for stopping by again.

Runes and masteries are definitely difficult to write a guide for in League of Legends because of the rapid changes in the game (and how often things become flavor of the month). Not to mention the fact that depending on which masteries you take it changes your rune choices.

It's near impossible to cater to everyone's playstyle and that is why I have a big bold disclaimer in my introduction. The simple truth is that AD Marks do offer easier last hitting and more damage for the first few levels (at which point Apen takes over just slightly from a math stand point). My issue with originally recommending them was that their true power is actually with AD champions that scale very strongly with AD early game (Ezreal for example) and require an aggressive playstyle that I believed not many of my readers would have a grasp of. AD also performs well on Corki since his passive turns it into true damage.

The reason I recommend Apen Marks and AD Quints is that it offers the best of both worlds at the end of the day. If players are still struggling to last hit without AD marks then they can choose to add them to their rune books. The difference between them both is marginal and will not make a bad player good or a good player bad out of nowhere. The key is understanding what your opponent is running and how is going to use that to his advantage.

I also recommend them because alot of top lane champions and even junglers benefit from Armor penetration over AD due to the already high base values on skills, by using armor pen marks on AD carries you can also reduce the cost of your runes overall and use the same rune book for multiple champions (not everyone can purchase extra rune books). I find it hard to juggle rune pages for champions and I have 10 of them, I can't imagine what it is like to have 3.

Here is a good post by Jules (Riot Intern) about the benefits of each:

The part about running MS quints on everybody is completely misleading and wrong, they are an extremely niche rune now. AP champions and AD carries are now basically all running 21/0/9 (with increased buff duration) which also lets you pick up some movement speed in the utility tree. The added % from runes is completely negligible when better positioning is way more important compared to a few numbers of movespeed, its going to save you very rarely.

Everyone has their own opinion on these things (and they should, people use runes for their playstyle).

I am currently doing a review process of all my League of Legends pages here so in the next capable of days I will add some discussion on AD marks vs Apen marks and the benefits, but that will not change the suggestions in this guide.

I feel the guide meets its goals, it provides the cheapest and most effective ways to purchase runes and build rune pages in such a way to help new-intermediate players save IP or deal with a restricted number of rune pages.

anonymous on August 25, 2012:

Hey Sam it's Stevo again. I was on the league forums and I offered your suggested "must have" runes to somone who was asking for rune ideas that would be good for anyone to have in their arsenal.

But then some guy told me that my ideas were "heavily outdated. Since the new masteries, everyone runs AD for last hitting except Arm Pen. Increased% Health is terrible compared to Health Per Level. Flat MR Blues are some of the best blues, it makes it a lot easier to lane against AP champs. You don't really need AD Quints, IMO, MS Quints are fine on everybody, but you do need AD Reds/Mag Pen Reds."

I was wondering if you are already aware of this and planning to make changes to your guide, or if this guy is missing the point of your guide entirely.

On a side note, this is why I think we need a rune and mastery guide put together as one. Masteries are so related that they can change which runes I am supposed to use! That's what's happenin'.

anonymous on August 25, 2012:

Hey Sammy, Stevo here from Awesome guide, amigo. I found it very helpful and enlightening. Runes were one of my weak points, but thanks to your guide that is no longer the case. I appreciate the hard work you put into it, and thanks for keeping it fresh.

In fact, I liked your guide so much that I recommended it in my article "League of Legends: How to increase your ELO fast!" I hunted down the best guides for a variety of subjects and yours covers the rune section like a warm blanket.

Thanks again, man. And keep up the good work!

I'd give you a link to the article you are in, but the spam blocker won't let me. guess you gotta google it. lol. I hope you like it!

Crit builld. They're weaker early game, but stronger mid game, much stronger late game.

33% crit damage

+175 hp @ 18

+24 mr @ 18

Final build

AR boots, 2x phantom dancer, infinity edge, 2x bloodthirster (or 1x bloodthirster + 1x last whisper or madreds as needed).

Obviously, you will need to know how to position yourself and when to enter battle. But it takes tanks quickly with the 90% crit chance and 260% crit damage. With charged bloodthirsters you deal about 3,4k damage per sec (before enemy armor ofc).

Samuel Franklin (author) on May 20, 2012:

@anonymous: The idea of this page is to provide rune pages that will work well on all champions in LoL (saving you IP and also very important if you only have 2 or 3 rune pages). The actual guide pages assume that the champion is your 'main' and that you want a specific rune page for them, hope that clears it up.

@anonymous: You want to look at Rune Book 2. This gives you tankiness and armor penetration. You can change the quintessences to something more defensive like health or movement speed though.

anonymous on April 21, 2012:

which rune page do i use for solo top champions like jarvin, yorick, wukong, irelia, poppy, riven, malphite (maybe tank for him)?

Samuel Franklin (author) on April 21, 2012:

@anonymous: It's hard to say that the best players use a single rune page. At the top levels they will have several rune pages for an AP for example and use a different page depending on their opponent and of course their own playstyle. The ones available on this page are definitely what the standard is (and the most IP efficient). As for Jungle I recommend checking out stonewall008s youtube channel he provides the best rune pages for junglers.

With your Rammus question, you could create a perfect jungle rammus rune page (see stonewall008s youtube) or you could simply use your tank rune page. The difference in jungle speed would maybe be 10seconds slower, if that. This is where it is up to you, if you play Rammus alot sure build the perfect rune page, but if you don't have the runes or the rune pages running tank will be perfectly fine, it won't mean you can't jungle, it will just be slightly slower, but not enough where you would even notice.

anonymous on April 21, 2012:

Great guide, is there a rune page used by the best players for AP, Jungler and Support?

Also I think I want to build all the pages you have here but lets say I jungle with Rammus, do I use the Jungler runes or the Tank runes?

I'm not interested in building hybrid because then it can only be used for Rammus who is the only one I can think of who is jungler and tank, I just want to generalize.

Samuel Franklin (author) on April 20, 2012:

@anonymous: The rune options haven't really changed much. I'm doing some testing and watching to see what the top ELO players do to adjust but that will take some time. I don't seen any big changes, it was more to stop people fulling stacking MR in mid vs mid (AP) battles.

Hey, love your guide, best one I've seen so far and so I am going to follow it.

Only thing that bothers me is that with the recent rune nerfs in the Hecarim patch, what should rune pages look like now?

Samuel Franklin (author) on March 20, 2012:

@anonymous: Yep they are included under the other good runes to purchase section. They don't feature on any of the rune page ideas here because they only work effectively for one or two champions. This page focuses on helping you make rune pages for multiple champions (saving IP).

Is this guide update with hybrid runes ..?

Samuel Franklin (author) on January 26, 2012:

@anonymous: Thankyou for clearing this up!

anonymous on January 26, 2012:

@anonymous: They go by name so they take 2 spots. I have now two types of MS quints because I bought my last one from previous christmas "sale".

This is great coverage

Samuel Franklin (author) on December 24, 2011:

@anonymous: Good Question! I think they are seperated, I've personally never bought discounted runes (simply because i had completed all my rune pages before there were any sales).

anonymous on December 23, 2011:

Just random question related to runes >.< Let's say that you purchase one 1.5% movement speed quint (event's -25% to price one) and later on after event ends, you purchase second 1.5% movement speed quint. Do they stack up on runes list into one spot or do they go into 2 different spots (aka do they go into spots based on effect or quint's name)

Thanks so much for this guide!

MASSIVE UPDATES! Enjoy everyone <3.

Samuel Franklin (author) on December 14, 2011:

@anonymous: If you buy rune pages they are automatically added to your available rune pages.

anonymous on November 28, 2011:

@anonymous: At the screen where there's a big PLAY button on the top, go to your profile at the top right. When that loads, you should see tabs labeled stuff like ranked stats, champions, masteries, runes, etc. Click the rune tab and everything you need should be there. Hope I explained that to where you understood. GLHF

how do u use an rune page that u have bought?

Samuel Franklin (author) on October 15, 2011:

@anonymous: Not anytime soon, i am currently in the process of establishing my YouTube channel. This page does not need any update as it serves its purpose as a basic entry intro the rune page system. For more detailed rune pages people should use particular champion guides.

anonymous on October 15, 2011:

When do you think you will finish the updated guide?

Samuel Franklin (author) on October 09, 2011:

@anonymous: When i first created this i wanted it to be very basic, I do plan on making some Ninja orientated pages soon. That being said, Shen wants more defensive stats over energy regeneration, Akali needs a particular rune page to activate her passives, leaving kennen as the only viable option for these runes.

anonymous on October 09, 2011:

This is neat, well thought out, and I'm going to reference it often. I noticed there is nothing here including energy runes for ninjas.

anonymous on September 01, 2011:

Very good job .
