Have you ever wanted to solve a Rubik's Cube? Read on for a simple, step-by-step guide to solving the 2x2x2 Rubik's cube.

The 2x2x2 cube is an easier version of the classic puzzle by Ernõ Rubik, and is a great way to get started to the world of cubing!

Getting Started

As an introduction, watch the video below for a in-depth guide on how to solve the cube. If you know the basics, i.e. how to solve one side, scroll down to the worded tutorial for a less detailed solution.

First, you will need a 2x2x2 cube. You could try to learn how to solve it without the cube, but it is a lot harder. If you do not have a 2x2x2 cube, any Rubik's cube will suffice, as you could just focus on solving the corners, which is almost the same as solving a 2x2x2


In the following video and tutorial, I will use certain cube notations to describe the moves that will be needed to be carried out, in order to solve the cube.

These include:

R - Right

L - Left

U - Up

D - Down

F - Front

B - Back

When one of these letters are shown, you look at the appropriate side and turn that face clockwise.

Sometimes, one of the letters (shown above) are followed by another letter or number. These could change what each move does, and it could change the whole outcome of the cube. make sure you look out for the following:

- An 'i' after a letter means 'inverted'. This means that when you look at the appropriate face, you turn the face anti-clockwise instead of clockwise.

- A '2' after a letter means you have to turn the appropriate face twice, instead of just once. Fortunately, it does not matter which way you turn the face, as long as you turn it twice, because it will have the same outcome, either way.

Before you start, you must learn what colours are where, on a Rubik's cube. On a standard Cube, the opposite colours are: red and orange, blue and green, and white and yellow. Once you know this, you may start

STEP ONE - solving the first side:

I recommend the white side, as it is the easiest to distinguish against the other colours. This helps minimise mistakes made.

STEP TWO - solving the first layer:

Now, we are looking for a straight line, made up of all four colours that surround the solved side. This does not usually happen by accident, so you will normally have to swap some pieces, to finish this step. If not, skip to step 3. To swap two adjacent corners, hold the cube with the solved side on the upper face, and the pieces that need to be swapped, facing you. Then do the following algorithm: Ri, D, R, L, Di, Li, Ri, D, R

After this stage, you would have solved half the cube; Well done!

STEP THREE - Positioning the last layer corners:

Turn the cube upside down, so the solved face is at the bottom. Now, judge whether the corners are all in the correct place (shown how to do this in the video tutorial). If the corners are all in the correct place, skip to step four. To swap two corners, turn the whole cube so they are in the bottom corners of the upper face, and do the following algorithm: Li, Ui, L, F, U, Fi, Li, U,L, U2

STEP FOUR - orient last corners:

If there is one solved corner, turn the cube so that cubie is in the bottom left corner of the upper face, and carry out the following algorithm. Doing this will preserve the solved edge, and solve the last three corners. If there are two solved corners, you must turn the cube so the solved corners are at the top of the upper face and do the following algorithm. This algorithm will rotate all edges but one, which means the two solved corners will be lost. The algorithm is as follows: R, U, Ri, U, R, U2, Ri, U2

This was the guide that worked for me. One thing was that I had to go back and forth steps 3 and 4 a couple of times.

Hello, worked on it but still cannot do... I am not sure how to understand at 6:20 of the video:

If the corners need to be swapped diagonally, swap the 2 corners on one of the sides, then swap the 2 corners on the other side,.... can you explain or show?

Great lens. I have a 3x3x3 and a 4x4x4. Solved them after some very intense effort and a few nights without sleep. Did the front side first including the corners. Then the back side. Then the remaining squares between the front and back sides. I devised "combinations" that allowed me to manipulate a small number of squares without disturbing the squares on the rest of the cube. Anyway, thanks for the excellent info here!
