1 - Darkspore

Darkspore is also published by EA and uses the same creature editing technology as Spore to create one of the best games like Spore available.
Darkspore is a science fiction RPG that has players battling the forces of Darkspore across a large number of alien worlds. In Darkspore you'll used squid mechanics and the creature creator from Spore to save the galaxy.
The game kicks off after an unstable DNA experiment escapes and mutates into creatures known as the Darkspore. To stop the Darkspore you will need create your own powerful squad of creatures that you create using thousands of different collectible parts. From here you can customise and upgrade your heroes to gain abilities and perks as you see fit. Don't get locked into your choices though, you can change your squad or individual creatures whenever you like.
Darkspore captures the customisation of the original Spore and combines it with RPG elements to create a fun and addicting game experience. Darkspore has also has co-op and PvP gameplay in mind making it a great game like Spore to play with friends.
2 - Species: Artificial Life, Real Evolution
A Free Indie Game Like Spore
Species: Artificial Life, Real Evolution is a free indie game like Spore that aims to capture the best aspects of spore and build on them.
Species aims to offer a scientifically accurate game that lets you experience evolution and the role of natural selection. The game is based on three separate principles to make this possible. This is variation (each create is different), mutation (born creatures have mutations that make them different from their parents) and natural selection (the environment affects creature survivability.
Species allows you to obverse, study or have an influence in the development of the game world.
3 - Flow
A Game Like Spore Which Captures The Cell Stage
Flow is a game that captures the cell stage of Spore. In Flow you start off as a small cell organism and must explore the clear blue waters to eat and evolve.
Flow can be played online or downloaded for your PC, Mac and even PlayStation 3. While the game doesn't have the depth of Spore it definitely is a fun time killer and will make you reminisce about the first time you played Spore.
If you are a fan of the early stages of Spore then this game like Spore is perfect for you.
4 - Planetoid
A Game Like Spore That Captures The Space Stage
Planetoid is a game like Spore for fans of the space stage in Spore. Planetoid 3D costs $5 but there is a free demo available which allows you to try the game out for free. You can also download and play Planetoid 2 for free to get a taste for what this game series has to offer.
In Planetoid you select a starting space civilization (you can create custom races). From here you travel to other planets and invest into technology eventually colonising more and more of space.
You soon realise you aren't alone though and must decide if your new encounter will be a friend or a foe.
This game like Spore offers a simple and fun alternative to the Spore space stage.
5 - Civilization (Series)
A Game Like Spore For Fans Of The Civilization Stage
Civilization is a game like Spore that will appeal to fans of the civilization stage in Spore. The Civilization series has many core games and expansions to experience so there is plenty of gameplay if you go with this Spore alternative.
The gameplay of the Civilization series is mostly turn based which makes it a great casual game experience as opposed to the fast past real time strategy (RTS) games available. While the Spore civilization phase was played in an RTS format it had slow pacing to allow for casual gaming.
All the Civilization titles offer similar gameplay which focuses on building a civilization from history into the future. With every turn you will have complete control over your units which you can use to explore, build, battle or negotiate with other players.
With nearly 10 million copies sold it is easy to see why Civilization made our list of games like Spore.
Civilization IV - My Favourite Game From The Civilization Series

If you are after a game like Spore then I strongly recommend trying out Eufloria HD on either an iOS or Android device.
7 - Artificial Life
A Game Like Spore For Your iOS Device
Artificial Life is one of the best life simulation games like Spore available. You can play Artificial Life on your iOS device with a HD version available specifically for the iPad.

Each organism is represented by a coloured sphere and gravitate around a central sun which can kill any organism that gets too close.
In Artificial Life there are two games modes available; a sandbox simulation mode where you set the parameters and then watch the organisms grow and thrive and a survival mode where you get to create your own organism and make it strong enough to thrive in the harsh environment.

Thrive is a game in development that aims to capture the gameplay of Spore and build on top of it. Thrive is a community based project which means if you are willing to give up some of your free time you can help create the game.
Thrive aims to have players experience a massive universe while also allowing them to change and evolve the game world in anyway that they desire. Thrive will be packed full of editors (much like Spore) to allow for plenty of customisation options beyond that of your just your species.
Thrive will mimic the gameplay of Spore allowing players to easily create a living organism and then jump into the game world. Starting from a single cell the player will advance and develop into a civilisation and eventually colonise other planets.

@anonymous: Thanks for the update! I had tried to reach you through a few channels without much luck. :)
When I've got a chance I'll look over the features and update this page accordingly.

@RockBou: Hi, I'm the developer of Species ALRE. Thanks for mentioning us! Thought I'd give you an FYI that, after a month offline due to tech issues on our hosting providers part, the site's finally back just in time for the 0.6.0 release. We've also put up a much more up to date youtube trailer, showing off all the new features. Thanks!

@anonymous: Thanks for the heads up! Links have been changed.
Keep up the great development work, the game is very worth of its place here. :)

Hi, I'm one of the developers of Thrive, and it was quite a surprise to see it make this list! I'd just like to point out that we have a new website, so it may be useful to replace the link to the ModDB page with this: www.revolutionarygamesstudio.com. Again, thanks for featuring us.
RockBou on June 02, 2013:
@SimilarSam: I hope so too, thanks!

@RockBou: Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to try contact one of the developers since their developer blog is still live although its been dead as of the past few months. Since its being run by an indie company site related issues could go weeks without getting noticed or fixed.
Hopefully they just haven't realised and aren't cancelling game development.

Two of my kids became addicted to Civilizations V over Christmas break - they would probably like some of these other games once they've gotten over Civilizations.
