9 Games Like MapleStory - Free, Online and No Download Alternatives To Maplestory

Games Like MapleStory - Games Similar To MapleStory

Are you looking for a game like MapleStory? There are many fun and exciting games available that are like MapleStory. Whether you want a free game, a paid game or a game that requires no download there is a MapleStory alternative available.

MapleStory has always been a favourite game of mine that I have played since its early beta stages and I have long searched for a game that is like Maplestory or contains Maplestory aspects in its gameplay. I hope that you find the games on this page good alternatives to Maplestory.

MapleStory is one of the MMOs that I spent the longest time with, playing on and off for over 5 years. I even took part in the beta and watched the game grow to become one of the biggest 2D side scrolling games available which is an experience I really enjoyed and will always remember. Because of this popularity though it has been a hard genre to compete in meaning there is definitely a shortage of alternatives.

I've still managed to find 9 great options for fans of MapleStory though and I hope you'll enjoy my collection. If you know any more games like Maplestory that aren't on the list then leave a comment at the end of the page and let me know.

1 - Elsword Online

Elsword Online is a popular MMORPG and offers a mixture of 2D and 3D gameplay with its 2.5D style. The game shares many similarities with Grand Chase (also featured on this page) which was created by the same development team (KOG Studios).

Elsword is free to play and features everything you would expect from a game in the genre with PvE, PvP, character classes, varied abilities and an in game real currency shop known as the Item Mall.

Combat is Elsword Online is slightly more skill based than similar games which is part of its attraction for gamers who are looking to set themselves apart in the game world. Players can take many character paths within the game and slowly advance through further specialisation when certain levels are reached.

Just like other games in the genre you'll explore the game world while defeating enemies and gaining experience to level up (nothing special here). The game does however offer some unique instanced dungeons for players (in groups of 4) to tackle puzzle focused dungeons with interactive elements similar to the party quests of MapleStory.

Elsword Online is one of the closest MapleStory style games available these days and definitely isn't shy on features that set it apart (and above) some of the other options available.

2 - Dust: An Elysian Tail

A Unique Side-Scrolling RPG

Dust: An Elysian Tail offers players a hand painted world where they will step into the shoes of a mysterious warrior on a typical search for their true identity.

The gameplay is anything but typical once you get into the experience though despite its seemingly standard storyline to start. You'll be surprised at the twists and turns that the game makes and get sucked into the fully voice acted and rich storyline.

Your weapon for this adventure is the mythical Blade of Ahrah that allows you to wield the unstoppable force of nature into countless battles and quests. Combining this with an array of spells and memorable characters you've got a side scrolling experience similar to that of MapleStory but with more role-playing orientated elements.

3 - Dofus

A Strategic MMO With A Large Community

Dofus is another one of the great anime style MMOs that have captured a large audience in recent years. Similar to MapleStory there is an insane variety in the available classes which ensures there is something for everyone. With a range of brawlers, spellcasters and everything in between the varied classes is one of the most attractive aspects of the experience.

Unlike other MMOs though Dofus uses a unique battle style that is in line with turn based games. It's implemented in such a way though that battles are still action orientated and the remaining gameplay is not slowed down by this decision.

If you love MapleStory for the varied classes and thriving community, you'll fall in love with Dofus for all the same reasons and more.

4 - Dragon Saga (Dragonica Online) - A Free 3D Side-Scroller MMORPG Like MapleStory

Dragon Saga (Dragonica Online outside North America) is a free online game just like Maplestory. Dragon Saga is a 3D based side-scrolling adventure style MMORPG with movement focused mainly on the horizontal axis. The game is based around an action packed combat system and also offers hundreds of varied quests, a great dungeon exploration system and a uniquely fun art style.

Dragon Saga offers six different base classes from which you can develop your character to specialise in a particular area (up to 3 tier job advancements), offering great re-playability and diversity among players. The interface takes a page out of MapleStory's book and is extremely accessible and easy to navigate, only enhancing an already great experience.

Dragon Saga is one of the best Maplestory like games available with its only downside being the massive download file size (around 2GB).

5 - Rainbow Saga

A Fast Paced Browser Action MMO Like MapleStory

Rainbow Saga is simply bursting with content which makes it great for any MMO lover. It features a very fast paced arcade inspired form of gameplay mixed with high quality graphics.

Rainbow Saga borrows the popular 2D style from MapleStory and features the same colourful graphic style that the game has popularised. With such a huge amount of quests, content and classes the experience on offer from Rainbow Saga is one of the greatest to date.

Rainbow Saga also features a vibrant PvP arena and over a dozen playable classes. For a game of this quality the face that it is browser based makes it easily accessible.

6 - LaTale

A 2D Fantasy MMORPG like MapleStory

LaTale is another 2D fantasy side-scroller which definitely draws art and character inspiration from MapleStory.

Latale's strength lies within its massive amount of character customisation through the detailed character skill system. Like most MMORPGs LaTale offers all the standard features including a PvP arena, crafting, item hunting and an abundance of different skills among the available classes.

Players of LaTale are also in for a treat with its great music soundtrack and its massive collection of skill animations. LaTale is a strong choice for any MMORPG fan and with its high player base is one of the best free MMORPGs available.

7 - Grand Chase

A 2D Side Scrolling MMO Game Like MapleStory

Grand Chase offers a similar 2D side scrolling experience to MapleStory and definitely has an anime inspired art style. The game plays like a fighting game with players tackling various stages to clear monsters and bosses in a co-operative environment.

Fans of MapleStory will instantly recognise the keyboard controls and mixture of mouse menus in the game. What you won't be familiar with is the combo focused gameplay, but don't confuse this with a button mashing experience.

Beyond the unique fighting style and progression system Grand Chase is a fairly standard experience with you earning the in game currency and levels to advance through the game while also improving your equipment.

The mixture of unique features and standard MMO gameplay is a nice mix that will keep you entertained especially if you prefer a more action focused experience.

8 - Lunaria Story

A 2D Side Scrolling Game Like MapleStory

Lunaria Story is a simple but extremely addicting 2D side scrolling adventure made with very similar mechanics to the MapleStory franchise.

Pick your class, engage in 2D combat and become part of a huge community as you develop your character and defeat a wide range of bosses. While some elements have been striped down in comparison to MapleStory there are a number of features that are entirely new to the genre such as the farming mechanics and tower defence inspired mini game.

If you love MapleStory but want something a little different with an equally dedicated community then be sure to start your Lunaria Story adventure.

9 - NosTale

NosTale offers a 2D MMORPG experience that has a different focus than most games allowing players to catch pets, decorate homes and adventure through a long story driven game world. NosTale stands for The Tale of Nomads of Silver Spirit.

These unique aspects have meant NosTale has found a nice little place in a saturated genre and continues to draw a large game following.

NosTale also sets itself apart with a very well paced experience system, a sleek game interface and instanced quests.

The game only features 3 core classes (Archer, Swordsman and Wizard) but this quickly branches outwards as players level up and acquire additional skills.

I loved my time with NosTale mostly because of the unique features that it adds to a core MMORPG framework. The MMO side of the gameplay is also very streamlined and simple so it a great casual option in particular.

A lot of those games look like fun, I have played MapleStory when I was younger and enjoyed it quite a lot! I play League of Legends mostly right now, but I'm always keeping an eye out for great new games. Especially free ones, who doesn't love free??

anonymous on September 01, 2013:

anonymous on August 18, 2013:

Samuel Franklin (author) on July 22, 2013:

@anonymous: Agreed! It is a genre I have always loved but they are really hard to come by these days. I've spent the last week or so trying some of the games that are currently available so expect to see the dead games removed in the coming week.

anonymous on July 22, 2013:

Most all of these games ended up's a fucking travesty. Hosts don't have the balls to invest in 2D mmos anymore it seems.

del3l3ie on July 16, 2013:

Not alike at all but a game I liked other than Maplestory was Gunbound but over the years its getting worse unfortunately..

Samuel Franklin (author) on June 29, 2013:

@anonymous: It's disappointing about the lack of updates on the games potential return, some solid answers would be good. I might have to finally bite the bullet and remove it from the page.

@anonymous: June somthing in 2013. Wonderking is still offline. There has been rumors about it coming back this year but nope. Too bad huh?

anonymous on June 29, 2013:

What about Wonderland Online? Its pretty good.

anonymous on May 09, 2013:

@anonymous: Still not up as of today. I doubt it will be up an running this year but I can hope. The fact they finally posted an update in January for the first time since 2011 makes me believe it may be coming out at least by 2014. I hope so anyway. MapleStory was good until Big Bang, then just got progressively worse, and Nexon is a really terrible company. WonderKing was the best alternative in my opinion.

anonymous on March 09, 2013:

@anonymous: wonderking is is currently not up for play and i don't know when it will

anonymous on February 14, 2013:

Neosaurs is the same as maplestory except its dinosaurs instead of people and it's a browser game you play on facebook.

anonymous on January 19, 2013:

@SimilarSam: It wasn't because of hacking, it was because of a disagreement between the developers and the company who hosted it. They posted a status update recently on the 8th saying that they were still trying to get the game going again.

anonymous on December 31, 2012:

Play El-sword guys!(same thing as Maple story)

anonymous on December 23, 2012:

neosuras is fun

anonymous on November 30, 2012:

i wanna make a latale account!

anonymous on September 25, 2012:

There is a game named Neosaurs that you can play on Facebook, it is the same but it uses dinosaurs, really fun

Camden1 on September 11, 2012:

My kids enjoy games like these; I'll have to see if they're planning Maplestory or any of these other games.

Samuel Franklin (author) on September 08, 2012:

@anonymous: WonderKing was taken offline recently due to constant problems with hacking, they plan to come back in October, if its not back online by then (or if there isn't anymore news) it will be removed from this page. Sorry to let you down!

anonymous on September 08, 2012:

I want to play wonderking, but there is no download button. Can someone please help me out?

anonymous on August 31, 2012:

I love how there's a few Korean games(: Now I know why people love going to game arcades and cafes in Korea, they look addicting!

Tolovaj Publishing House from Ljubljana on August 18, 2012:

There is an new game in the app store called Maplestory Live you can be a Dual Blade or Mechanic in it

anonymous on June 20, 2012:

Wonderking also looks like maplestory. It's just that Wonderking has double jump and maplestory has more jobs...:)

DundeeP on May 31, 2012:

I love the atmosphere that Maplestory gives! It offers a lot to the gaming community!

anonymous on May 28, 2012:

Wow Thx

anonymous on May 20, 2012:

I think Ghost online whatever it is, is like maplestory, and grandchase is probably elsword now. LaTale and Maple are the only games i could get into. DragonSaga seemed a bit childlike to me.
