1 - Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

One Of The Best Games Like Dragon Age Available

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is one of the best games like Dragon Age and is very deserving of top spot on this list of role playing games.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a third person perspective RPG just like Dragon Age released in early 2012. The game is available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

The role playing elements start before you even load up your game with 4 playable races, each with their own unique backstory and starting game location. Combine this with the three different classes and 66 total abilities there is plenty of variety to cater towards particular playstyles and preferences.

Combat is based on careful button timing (like most modern day action RPGs) with the odd cutscene thrown in during combos and final killing blows. NPC interaction is also an important aspect of the game, with players having the ability to talk, kill or rob the various NPCs that they encounter (with each decision offering different consequences on the story).

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a common recommendation when people start looking for a game like Dragon Age and once you get your hands on it you will quickly be able to see why.

2 - Two Worlds II

Two Worlds II was released back in late 2010 and is the sequel to the hit 2007 game (I recommend playing it if you enjoy Two Worlds II).

Two Worlds II takes place in a fantasy world ad has the player exploring a massive game world while they undertake quests with their customisable hero. The game world is mostly open and does not require players to be at a particular point in the main storyline to visit areas, meaning you can avoid the main story all together if you wish and simply explore what the world has to offer.

The best part of Two Worlds II is that you aren't locked into a single character class and pick and choose as you desire (as you level up your four main stats and various skills). Want to be a stealth mage? Or maybe a tank mage? The choice is completely up to you.

While the game doesn't require you to play the first game in the series I strongly recommend checking it out if you enjoy the sequel.

3 - Dragon's Dogma

The Third Game On This List Of Games Like Dragon Age

Dragon's Dogma is a great console role playing game like Dragon Age (available on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3).

Dragon's Dogma was released in 2012 and offers a fantasy world mixed with survival horror and traditional hack and slash action. The game offers a variety of class types beyond the usual three core options that you see in other RPGs making for some great variety.

As you journey through the game world you will be accompanied by three party members who can be left to be controlled by the AI or you can issue them basic orders to help you in battle. These party members will also interact with you, each other and even offer you tips on enemies that you encounter.

Dragon's Dogma has a huge open world which will offer over 100 hours of content (main story and side quests) to RPG fans. The game also has hundreds of NPCs and a day-night cycle which dramatically affects gameplay.

Dragon's Dogma has been compared to some of the big name RPGs including the Elder Scrolls Series, Dark Souls and Devil May Cry (combat system wise).

4 - Mass Effect (Series)

A Sci-Fi Game Like Dragon Age

The Mass Effect Series has many similarities to Dragon Age (mostly because BioWare was also behind this space RPG). The games are played in the same third person style as Dragon Age but take place in the depth of space as opposed to a fantasy world.

The Mass Effect series has received critical acclaim for its tightly written story, character development, multiple story paths and strong graphics. In Mass Effect players take control of Commander Shepard as he and his chosen companions attempt to save the galaxy from a strange mechanical race know as the Reapers.

Mass Effect will feel like a second life to you with the incredible storyline and story paths available. This focus on player decision and variety of paths also gives the Mass Effect series great replay value.

Mass Effect is definitely one of the top games like Dragon Age available and with a whole series (potentially hundreds and hundreds of hours) Mass Effect will definitely keep your RPG cravings at bay.

Mass Effect Trilogy (Origin - PC)

5 - Fable (Series)

Fable is another popular game series that will appeal to fans of Dragon Age with its RPG elements and large game environments. The third instalment of the series is available on Xbox 360 and Windows.

Players new to the Fable series will have no problem starting with the third game in the series as the game is only loosely based on the previous installments.

Fable 3 is set 50 years after the second game and puts players in charge of forming alliances in order to build support for a revolution to overthrow King of Albion, it is only then that the face of the true great evil shows itself.

All the Fable games have scored highly with critic and will definitely not disappoint RPG fans holding a score of 80 on metacritic.

6 - Skyrim

An Incredible RPG Experience With Countless Gameplay Hours

Skyrim is the latest game in the Elder Scrolls series which has players take control of the Dragonborn as they attempt to stop Alduin (a dragon) from destroying the world.

Skyrim offers one of the biggest ever game worlds and is populated by countless NPCs, side quests and unique back stories for the player to discover. You'll quickly forget about your main quest and go about exploring the countryside to find hidden treasures.

This epic game world is backed by a solid RPG skill system that allows players to mix and match skills as they see fit, this allows you to blur the lines between the normal mage, warrior and rogue archetypes to create a unique character to suit your preferred playstyle.

After trying out Skyrim you can also try the previous games in the Elder Scrolls series (Oblivion and Morrowind) for a similar gameplay experience.

The Witcher game series follows the story of Geralt in a medieval style fantasy world, Geralt is one of the last surviving witchers who are monster hunters gifted with incredible powers.

9 - Neverwinter Nights (Series)

Another Old BioWare Game Like Dragon Age

Neverwinter Nights is another older game to make it on this list of games like Dragon Age but is definitely worth of inclusion. The original game was developed by BioWare in 2002 with a sequel in 2006 (and plenty of expansions in between).

The games are based on the popular tabletop adventure of Dungeons and Dragons Online. Players build their own character, selecting their race, class and assigning skills.

From here the adventure begins in the world of Neverwinter Nights, players can explore cities, dungeons, forests and many other unique locations in this game universe. The game's also have a large number of available expansion packs only adding to the available content.

whitepawn on October 22, 2015:

Kingdoms isn't like Dragon Age apart from the facts that it's listed as both a fantasy and an RPG. It's boring, repetitive, and quest based like an MMORPG. There are no companions to care about or witty banter to engage in with those companions. It really does start to feel like questing in vanilla WoW after a while.

Skyrim is not like Dragon Age. Skyrim is a sandbox with very little plot and no real companions and no witty banter or involvement. It feels like an MMORPG opened up and you were the only one to buy access.

Neverwinter Nights 2 pushes much closer and almost hits that mark. It has all the quality for plot, a linear direction, and solid companions with stories of their own. And bickering among them, an utter necessity.

Mass Effect IS like Dragon Age, all the ways we want it to be any way, in spite of one being a space opera and one being traditional sword and sorcery based fantasy.

The better question is to say which is most like a combo of NWN 2, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age for multigame plot carryover and companion development with MODERN graphics and voice acting. (i.e. not another suggestion for Planescape Torment which was fantastic about 10 years ago).

That's the question that keeps getting asked and not answered across forums and comments sections. Why the fudge is Bioware the only one making these games if so many are looking to find more of them?

ImmatureEntrepr on January 24, 2013:

What a great list of RPGs! Now if only I had the time to play all of them... :)

WriterJanis2 on January 23, 2013:

I'd like to try all of them.

Nicholas Weller on January 23, 2013:

I have actually played all of these, and I would have to say that Mass Effect followed by Neverwinter would be my favorite.
