@anonymous: An initial, standard account should be free. Paying for something with actual cash is optional. IMVU is a fun even though you have to download the app in order to dress your avatar along with other things; same with SL. The upside with these two is that there's a possibility to earn actual cash. If you don't want to download anything check out Facebook; nothing needs to be downloaded though they will try to convince you to download things when you don't have to.

Tinierme closed down unfortunately. In order to make your avatar look cool, you would have to spend a ton of money on the gachas, which did not guarantee you would get what you wanted. That's pretty much the reason it closed down.
