Corpse Party: Book of Shadows
Corpse Party is a survival horror adventure game developed by TeamGrisGris in 1996. The games is released in the Western world after the team remade the game for the PC in 2008. Another version was released for the PlayStation Portable in 2011. Venture into Heavenly Host Elementary and follow the students as they try to escape this inconspicuous but spooky world.
The game is more like an interactive graphic novel. It consists of static images, and you must hover your cursor in order to search for objects. You can explore the school and move from one room to another by selecting a location on the map. You must solve puzzles, escape enemies and choose the correct dialog options in order to ultimately finish the game. Corpse Party largely consists of static backgrounds with subtitled narration. If you don't mind reading a lot, then this game is truly worth checking out.
Yume Nikki is a horror game created by Japanese developer Kikiyama using the RPG Maker 2003. It provides a strangely psychological experience, and it's the kind of game that you won't soon forget.
In this game, you take on the role of Madotuski, a young girl who do not like interacting with other people. Instead, she stays inside her room and delves into her dream world. The gameplay is really straightforward: you go to bed, interact with the dream world, wake up, save at your desk, and do everything all over again. There is entirely no text in the game, giving you the freedom to use your imagination and create a story of your own. The graphics and art are not amazing, but that is to be expected for an old game which was created using the RPG Maker 2003. The good thing is that the music more than makes up for the lack of visual appeal.
Yume Nikki is an absolutely enjoyable game, and the unique storyline sets it apart from other survival horror games.
.flow is one of the most popular fangames of the original Yume Nikki. It has made its mark due to its eerie atmosphere and huge amounts of disturbing imagery. If you think that all you would have is another Yume-Nikki-kind of gaming experience, you are wrong. You will realize that .flow is far from the original, as if you're playing an entirely different game.
The main character in .flow is Sabitsuki. Just like in Yume Nikki, the objective of the game is to enter her dream world and collect effects. You can unlock three endings. To unlock two, you must collect 25 effects, and the third can be unlocked by collecting three boxes. This game also does not have in-game text, requiring you to interpret the events and create a story of your own. The graphics aren't great, but the music certainly is. The addition of three possible endings make this game very interesting, and making your own story only adds to the fun.
Schuld is an indie psychological horror game created by Kelven. It is a relatively short game, one you can complete in just a couple of hours. It has many resemblances with Silent Hill, so fans of that game will surely feel at home as they venture into a mystical world where a brooding and grim experience awaits.
The story of the game revolves around Aaron, a man who suddenly finds himself in a world that is slowly dying. He can't remember where he came from and why he ended up in the place he is in. In an attempt to make sense of the situation, he explores his new world, looking for clues that will unlock the mysteries that surround him. As you make progress, the puzzles become more challenging and the events increasingly horrifying. There are also a couple of action scenes, giving you a break from solving puzzles.
Schuld is a short game, but the time you spend in this game is well worth it because of the awesome story and thrilling gameplay. Although the visuals are not very impressive, it can still compete against other commercial horror games out there.
