As one of the most demanding games to have been developed in the last few years, Frostpunk asks a lot of you. Forced into an alternate world where the world freezes over almost entirely, the remnants of humanity work towards living in cities that surround massive heat generators. With precious few opportunities for luxury anymore, everyone has to help out – even when they are unable.

This is a game of moral choices, difficult moments, and challenges to overcome on a daily basis. No two moments in Frostpunk are calm, and this is a game that really makes you live in that atmosphere. Where, then, are the best games like Frostpunk? What other releases match this imperious city builder?

It’s a tough game of moral choices, having to do anything you can to survive, and facing the consequences of your actions on a regular basis.

2. Foundation

Though still in development, for the most part, Foundation offers a great experience for anyone trying to build a medieval city. It’s not got the same decision-making depth or the same morbid theme as Frostpunk, but it makes our games like Frostpunk list because it offers so many opportunities to be creative. It’s the ideal place to start, really, for anyone who is trying to get into city-building games that leave you with the decisions to make that can really impact the future of your entire establishment.

3. Kingdoms and Castles

Very enjoyable for most people who are new to city building games, Kingdoms and Castles is a calm and endearing little kingdom builder. It’s not got the same depth or severity of decisions, so if you want something that just let you build a beautiful kingdom then you should definitely look to try out this game. Very popular on the city-building circuit with good reason.

4. Against the Storm

If you want to be in a world where you need to be pretty smart with your resources, then Against the Storm is worth trying out. This world never stops raining, and you need to try and find a way to build settlements that can survive these conditions. This is a procedurally generated roguelike city builder that manages to pack in city-building and colony management into a tough, challenging world. Very fun!

5. Planetbase

If you want to enjoy a game where you have to make tough decisions for the good of the entire colony, then this is one to try out for sure. It’s a lot of fun even if many times you find yourself having to overcome unique challenges on a remote, inhospitable planet.

Forces you to be smart and to be very resourceful, using everything that you have to give your citizens the best life you can – even if it means having to make a tough series of choices to keep everyone alive and happy overall.

6. Industries of Titan

A very interesting city builder, this game puts you into the corporation-heavy world of Titan as you try and build a massive industrial supercity. Here, you need to try and deal with rival corporations, strike deals, and even put them out of business when you have to. It has the same kind of enjoyable city building and simulation theme, making it one of our most popular games like Frostpunk.

7. Empires of the Undergrowth

If you want to be in control of your own colony, then this is a good one to try out. Try and help an ant colony grow, build, thrive, and develop. Fast-paced and one small decision can have huge consequences, making this a great game for anyone who likes to really challenge themselves and see your nest live with the decision that you make. Tough, rewarding, and fun!

8. They Are Billions

Though this is not one of the games like Frostpunk in terms of gameplay, it’s got very similar themes and ideas. This is a game where humanity has been ravaged by a post-apocalyptic nightmare, where billions of bodies roam the world looking to mindlessly destroy anything that gets in their way.

Try and build up colonies using intelligent steampunk equipment that can play a role in keeping the armies of the horde under control for days at a time.

9. Endzone - A World Part

A good choice for many people who want to enjoy the post-apocalyptic theme is to try out Endzone. Endzone is a highly enjoyable game that has you build up a city as you try to build fresh from the ashes of a nuclear disaster. Things have been pushed back massively in terms of technology, so you need to be intelligent – and sometimes ruthless – with how you use, manage, and allocate resources. Hard going, but hugely enjoyable with good reason.

10. IXION

Lastly, if you are looking for games like Frostpunk with a more sci-fi theme then check out IXION. This highly popular game puts you in charge of the Tiqqun space station as you work towards finding a new home for humanity.
