1 - Stormfall
A Persistant Browser Based Game Like Evony
Stormfall is another browser based game like Evony with a military focus that draws inspiration from the Middle Ages. The game has a strong player base (with several thousand active at anyone time) and is built on top of the formula of other Plarium games, who produce a number of the great MMORTS games to grace the genre.
Stormfall has you build up your own empire from humble beginnings, grow an army and meet other players on your journey. The game is constantly being updated and tweaked and what it might lack graphically on your first glance it more than makes up for with gameplay depth.
If you want a break from the stock standard MMORTS game Stormfall delivers an interesting experience.
2 - Sparta
A Historical Strategy Game Like Evony
Sparta follows a similar gameplay style to the other MMO strategy games on this page. It focuses on gathering resources and growing an army to ultimately expand your settlement as far as possible.
Sparta is one of the easier Strategy MMO games to get into and features a sleek design interface that helps you analyse information easily.
The game starts you off in a simple area of farmland and gives you the challenge of growing a thriving empire. This is accomplished by building a variety of structures that each offer its own benefits and technological upgrades. While Sparta doesn't re-invent the online MMO strategy genre it pulls it off wonderfully and is definitely one of the great games like Evony.
3 - Shadow Kings
Another Medieval Game Like Evony
Shadow Kings takes place in medieval times and has players take control of their own kingdom to battle for dominance. The game is playable completely within your browser (no need to download anything). With a good amount of depth to the game you can choose to focus on trade or battle, the choice is yours.
Shadow Kings is unique though in that it's also available on iOS and Android which means you can stay connected to your kingdom at all times.
In Shadow Kings you will farm raw materials and use them to fuel your army. Train a variety of different soldiers and gear them to claim new kingdoms in your name. Experience the great adventure that is Shadow Kings and make new friends along the way.
4 - Goodgame Empire
Take Control Of A Kingdom In This Game Like Evony
Goodgame Empire is another medieval themed game like Evony and is one of the few multi platform games out there. This means that players can enjoy the game from their mobile device (iOS and Android) or play it in your browser. Because all of these servers are connected together you can swap between devices as you wish to make sure you're always in contact with your empire.
One of the more unique elements of Goodgame Empire is the ability to direct your troops in battle. Unlike other games where you are limited to selecting your troops and sending them out Empire lets you control their combat tactics by choosing the areas of your enemies castle you'll commit your troops towards.
This also works in the reverse by allowing players to build up their castle that is used to defend against attacks as they see fit. By adding this extra element it's easy to get a lot more enjoyment from the game as you go from small settlement to rankings leader.

A Popular Game Like Evony
Tribal Wars 2 (or TW2) is a browser based MMO real time strategy game like Evony. The game takes place in the Middle Ages and has players take control of a small village and eventually take over other villagers.
Tribal Wars is one if the more popular browser games available with millions of registered users. The majority of the game is accessed through the main screen (which is a text and graphic interface), from here players can construct buildings, recruit soldiers and control your troops.
By checking out other user's profiles you can see a variety of stats including village information, opponents defeated, current location, rank and the tribe (guild) they belong too. These guilds known as tribes are of great importance within the game and are used for protection and to co-ordinate attacks, tribes can also form alliances with other tribes.

7 - The West
A High Quality Game Like Evony
The West throws you right into action against rival settlements and other growing threats in the Wild West. As you fight over what is available in the harsh environment you'll have plenty of fun choosing your next strategic step for your empire.
Set in the middle of the wild west landscape players will command their own settlement of cowboys, Indians or Mexicans that each have their own strengths while raiding other players and completing a PvE storyline and quests. It's a game that leans more on it's storytelling elements and even includes lots of voice overs that help bring the game to life and don't force you to read walls of text to get the gist of the situation at hand.
The end game focus in The West is also pretty strong ensuring that it is a game that you can continue to play for months to come. This end game is mostly centred around clan rankings which encourages you to be tactical with your clan mates. Leaderboards for offence, defence, raids and invasions are also always highly contested and within the reach of even non-paying players which is a nice change.

Take a break from all the other games and try out the military space style that OGame has to offer.
9 - Forge of Empires
Experience A Fractured Game World In This Game Like Evony
Forge of Empires is a great strategy game option that takes place in a dystopia world which has been ravaged by war.
It's not each faction for itself in this militaristic focused strategy game. Leading your faction to victory won't be easy and will require plenty of raiding to secure the limited resources that remain for yourself.
The game follows the standard strategy game formula, giving you control over a small settlement and allowing you to eventually turn it into a strong and established base. Forge of Empires draws heavily from the medieval era so is very similar to Evony in that regard (making it a great game like Grepolis as well).
With several different resources to fuel your settlement and recruit military focused units there is plenty of strategy hidden in the game.

3 years later, and Antzzz is still going strong. I love it!
BattleBuilder on January 15, 2014:
I recommend Casters of Kalderon. It's 3D and has a fresh approach to things. I played the alpha version, that is now closed beta both in browser and android and they just released an open beta in Google play in UK and Finland. Check it out.

Looking at these selections reminds me of Chronicles of the Sword from SC3. Haven't played a game like these in a while but look forward to getting back into them. Thanks for sharing this list. Awesome work.

I love antzzz. Completely free, no tricky titles and no need to farm. Paying for the extras doesn't give you an unbeatable advantage so everything is fair. You can also make infinite troops as long as you have enough workers gathering food.
anonymous on February 27, 2013:
I like the idea of Antzzz but IMO it has a pretty poor interface, certainly not up to the standards of many of the other games listed here.

Thank you for this. Didn't know there was a game to play with ants.Looks very interesting. I will try it and see what happens :)

Great list! I came upon this post while looking for a game like evony, without alliances.
I think an evony game without 100man fricken stomp boxes would provide a different dynamic.
Of course without guilds these games have a much much more difficult late game.
Maybe an FFA game where the upper tech is ultra expensive or another experiment in scarcity.

I played Defender of the Crown many many years ago, when I was a kid. Don't know if this game is still somewhere around, but remember how I have spent couple of nights up just to beat the enemy...

Enjoyed your list! I've heard good things about Travian.
