The 7 Best Word Games for iOS and Android!

If you like challenging yourself with fun and stimulating word games, you’ve come to the right place.

There are probably thousands of free word games in the Android and iOS app stores, but which are the best ones out there?

I’ve been playing word games since a child (back then, the “old fashioned” way, with board games), and I’ve also found what I think are some of the best word games for mobile devices. Here’s a list of my top picks.

1. Words with Friends

If you like playing word games, chances are you’ve already played Words with Friends. This Scrabble-type word puzzle is one that can be played with friends, either connected via Facebook or directly through the app. The game has been around since 2009 and was even one of the top-ranking games on the iOS app store both in 2010 and 2011.

There’s also a sequel, Words with Friends 2, which includes an expanded in-game word database (50,000 more words than the original) and a new team mode where you can play with five other players to compete for the highest score.

2. Word Stacks

Word Stacks is a unique word game in that the words are already all laid out on the board, and it’s up to you to swipe on the screen to locate the hidden words. As you select each word, the remaining blocks fall, so you have to be strategic in taking words off the board and careful not to eliminate a word by pulling the necessary letters out of place. It’s sort of like a mix of a word search and Jenga.

Honestly, the game is somewhat hard to explain but super fun to play. Give Word Stacks a try!

3. Wordscapes

Wordscapes is made by the same creators of Word Stacks. This game is a bit different in that you’re presented with a wheel of 4+ letters, which you then need to drag on a crossword board to create new words. This game also increases in challenge and complexity as you level up; the words get harder, and the number of letters to make words from gets longer, but you have a beautiful background to look at the whole time, which is where the “-scapes” (i.e. “landscapes”) part of the game comes from.

There are over 5,000 puzzles to play from, so you’ll never get bored!

4. Alphabear

Alphabear is a word puzzle game created by the same developers responsible for the adorable match-3 game Triple Town. If you’ve played Triple Town, you’ll find the bears in Alphabear familiar, as they look identical to the ninja bears that come to ruin your village in Triple Town!

Anyway, in Alphabear, you select letters on a grid to create new words. Each time you make a valid word, a bear appears. If you continue to make words, more bears appear; bears can merge and become bigger, and if you do well in each level, you can collect bears which give you special power-ups and abilities for the next levels!

There’s also a sequel—Alphabear 2—which adds new words, more puzzles and new bears to collect!

5. CodyCross

CodyCross is one of my personal favourites on this list, and I’ve spent lots of time playing it! The game is a take on traditional crossword puzzles. A little alien gives you hints for the answers to each crossword, and as you finish each level, you progress to new destinations through time and space with your supernatural companion. Each level has an overall theme (like astronomy, tourist attractions, or famous composers), so you can learn a bit of trivia as well.

You can play offline or sync progress on Facebook, allowing you to take your CodyCross game with you anywhere and at any time!

6. Battle Text

Battle Text allows you to play against a competitor (real friends, a random in-game match, or a computer) and the winner is determined by whoever spells the longest words! You have your phone or tablet’s full keyboard available to you, but the catch is that you have to spell each word starting with the last letter of the previous word used (for example, if your competitor uses the word “bingo” which ends in O, you’d need to use a word like “orange” to keep the game going. Then the component would need a word starting with E, and so on …). Each round is timed, and the first player to reach 40 points wins.

This game is unique, as you aren’t limited to a random selection of letters and can use pretty much any words you want to, though you can definitely be strategic in picking words that end with tricky letters (like Z or X) so your competitor can’t get ahead of you!

7. 7 Little Words

I’ve been playing 7 Little Words for quite some time! The game is a bit of a mix between crosswords, anagrams, and trivia games. Each puzzle gives you a list of seven clues and parts of words which can be put together to solve the clues and make seven full words. There’s also a theme for selected puzzles; something which links the words to one another.

The game comes with 25 puzzles that are completely free, and then two daily free puzzles. You can also purchase puzzle packs if you just can’t get enough of the free levels!
