Ranking the 5 Omnath Cards in Magic: The Gathering
Elementals in Magic
Both the subtype elemental and its premier character, Omnath, have evolved over the years in Magic. Elementals now have a fair bit of tribal support, some of which we'll see today, bested only by elves as green's premier faction.
And legendary Omnath started as a monocolor green elemental, but he's since gained four newer forms, each adding another color. But more isn't always better—these are the five Omnath forms ranked in Magic: The Gathering!
5. Omnath, Locus of Rage
Rage does have some cool effects; just playing a land creates a powerful 5/5 elemental token, and when he or another of your elementals dies, Rage hits any target for three.
It's just that seven mana for a creature with no defensive abilities is a lot, plus to afford seven, you'll have likely already played your land for turn, and if Omnath dies before you get to spam his landfall triggers, he just can't justify seven mana.
4. Omnath, Locus of All
The rainbow Omnath costs either one mana of each color, or you can substitute two life instead of the black. Either way, you get a 4/4 elemental who lets you keep unspent mana and turns it black.
Plus, at the start of your first main phase, you add the top card of your deck to hand and can reveal it if it has three or more colored symbols to add three mana. Again, very cool effects, but the color needs and lack of immediate reward hold back this Omnath.
3. Omnath, Locus of the Roil
Moving up quite a bit in the competitive ranks, this tribal Omnath hits any target on entry for damage equal to the number of elementals you control; counting himself, that's at least one.
Better yet, whenever a land enters your field, Omnath puts a +1/+1 on your elemental, and if you then control eight or more lands, you get to draw a card.
2. Omnath, Locus of Mana
The cheapest and original Omnath only needs three mana and one color. He not only lets you stockpile green mana, he gets +1/+1 for each green in your pool, meaning his puny 1/1 stats will quickly skyrocket, which can help score a commander damage win.
1. Omnath, Locus of Creation
Four-color Omnath reigns supreme. He's got strong 4/4 stats, draws a card on entry, and whenever your land enters, he gives you four life for the first trigger, four mana (one red, green, white, and blue) on the second, and hits all opponents and their planeswalker for four on the third.
Immediate benefit plus ongoing threat makes for by far the most competitive Omnath out there.
Building Around Omnath in Magic
Whether spearheading a deck with an Omnath commander or just regularly running him, Omnath rewards elemental support and multi-land effects, like fetch lands. Two of his versions also let you hoard mana, further rewarding ramp strategies, but for now, share your favorite Omnath and I'll see you at our next MTG countdown!
